Inhalt
During the first centuries of Islam, a highly variegated culture of courtly reception and luxurious residence developed around the caliphs and their dynasties. This culture developed from older late antique forms of palace culture, amalgamated with new ideas about rulership and its adequate presentation. The rural residences of the Umayyads in Bilad ash-Sham and the Abbasid palaces, most notably in Samarra, provide a rich array of architectural forms, decoration and other elements of material culture that give a vivid image of the early Islamic court life. At the same time, they raise questions about the interpretation of the archaeological record, about patronage and the organisation of artistic processes, about our understanding of forms, their possible sources, usage and meanings. Ultimately, problems of continuity and innovation will be discussed, which are also intertwined with our understanding of historical periods and cultural affiliations.
