Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
This course will be in English language (as the wish for more English courses was expressed by many students at the last Bierfassabend)

Inhalt
Course Description: Most psychological research has been conducted in western industrialized countries. Yet, most people today do not live in these countries. Cross-cultural psychologists study the impact of the social, historical, and cultural environment on individual psychological functioning around the world ultimately contributing to more generalizable psychological theories. This course introduces students to the essential concepts and actual studies in the field of Cross-cultural Psychology. The concept of culture will be defined and different approaches in the study of culture will be highlighted. Empirical cross-cultural studies in the different fields of psychology such as cognition, personality, health, intergroup relations, and organizational psychology will be discussed. The course might be especially interesting for (but not limited to) students who could imagine working on a research practicum at the University of North Florida at a later point of time or for students who might consider writing a cross-cultural psychological Master thesis/Diplomarbeit.
Course Objectives:
• Highlight the influence of the cultural background on the way people think, feel, and behave
• Become sensitive to similarities and differences among different cultures
• Develop tolerance and gain respect and appreciation for cultural diversity
