Inhalt:

Das Risiko, über eine längere Zeit arbeitslos zu sein, ist für Akademiker verhältnismäßig gering. Mit weniger als 3 Prozent befindet sich die Arbeitslosenquote von Akademikern auf einem Niveau, bei dem man üblicherweise von Vollbeschäftigung spricht. Trotz dieser hohen Nachfrage nach Hochqualifizierten ist es notwendig, aussagekräftige Bewerbungsunterlagen zusammenzustellen, das heißt, gute ‚Werbung‘ für sich selbst zu machen, denn die Bewerbungsunterlagen sind das erste, was der Personalverantwortliche von Ihnen zu sehen bekommt. Die Übung Bewerbungstraining soll eine Möglichkeit bieten, potenziellen Bewerbern Hilfestellungen und praktische Informationen zu vermitteln, um sich im Konkurrenzkampf auf dem Arbeitsmarkt zurechtfinden und erfolgreich bewerben zu können. Es sollen nicht nur Informationen zur Bewerbungsphase inklusive der gezielten Stellensuche für Akademiker im Mittelpunkt der Übung stehen, auch die interessante Gestaltung von Anschreiben und Lebenslauf soll intensiv behandelt werden. Ebenso sollen das Zusammenstellen einer interessanten Bewerbungsmappe sowie die Vorbereitung auf ein Vorstellungsgespräch im Kurs intensiv geübt werden.

Inhalt:

Shakespeare's plays were primarily intended as scripts for actors, not as texts for readers. These scripts were amended, adapted and rewritten according to the effect they had on the audience during the performance. It has therefore been argued that audiences go to 'hear' a play, to engage with the ideas and argument, and to 'see' a film, to be drawn into the story through filmic tools like lighting, editing and camerawork. Shakespeare's plays have been 'translated' into visual texts from as early as 1899 and film makers continue to be fascinated by their appeal to modern audiences.

This seminar will introduce the students to Shakespeare's history plays – from huge box office successes (e.g. Laurence Olivier's Henry V, 1945) to lesser known adaptations.

Information about the films etc. will be made available in the course of the semester.

Inhalt:

The 1980s mark the beginning of a HIV and AIDS crisis that the world is still struggling with today. In the US, this crisis has, from very early on, been discussed not only in medical and sociopolitical discourses but in literary texts as well. These literary approaches to HIV and AIDS are surprisingly diverse in form and content, and talk about living with and dying from the disease, about mourning dying friends and lovers, and about healing aspects for a disease that cannot be overcome.

In this seminar we will discuss various HIV and AIDS texts, including autobiographies, novels, short stories, poems, plays, and movies. We will look at the development of the stories these texts have told over the past three decades, and at the changing roles that race, gender and region play in their different approaches to the disease.

Students are expected to give a short presentation on a text from the reading list and participate actively in the course. Since this is a block seminar, presentations will only take place in the second part of the seminar and should be concise, to the point, and no longer that 10 minutes.

Material needed for the seminar will be provided well ahead of class in the Virtual Campus. You are welcome to bring in materials from outside of class (newspaper articles, handouts etc.), and you can also plan classroom activities for your presentation.

“Jetzt ist die Zeit und Stunde da, wir reisen nach Amerika!” German Immigrants in US-American and Canadian Literature and Culture

This interdisciplinary course has been designed especially for North-American exchange students and German students, inviting them to study each other’s cultures together. Readings and classroom discussions will be both in English and German.

“The achievements and contributions of German-Americans have had a profound effect on making the United States the country it is today. Famous for their practical skills, thrift, hard work, interest in the arts, and enjoyment of good living they have left their mark indelibly on American culture and life. [M]any […] have played a special part in creating the German-American legacy.” (Website of the U.S. Embassy in Germany)

Parts of this cultural legacy are literary texts published by and about German immigrants in the US and Canada. In this class we will analyze representations of transatlantic ties between Germany and North-America from the beginning of the 19th century until today. How did moving to America or Canada affect the identity of German emigrants? How did their new home transform their ideas and ideals? How, in turn, were the US and Canada affected by the large numbers of immigrants originating from German speaking countries? And how has this German mass migration shaped the image of the US and Canada? What role has literature played in this transatlantic exchange?

Our readings will include several novels, as well as short stories, poems, newspaper articles, photographs, and songs. This will be a very reading-intensive class, so students are asked to read three texts in advance, meaning: before class starts in April. The novels will form the background for most of our discussions, but additional reading will be required during the semester.

Note: Make sure that you order your copy of the novels (e-book or printed) well in advance –preferably before the beginning of the term! It is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions. Your input will be welcome!

Inhalt:

A modern dreamland, former convict settlement, faraway realm of the British Empire at the end of the world, a modern democracy, mythical homecountry and cultural centre to the indigenous Aboriginals – Australia is known in many guises and still many features of the “land down under” remain strikingly unfamiliar.

This seminar intends to shed light on some of Australia’s literature and culture always bearing in mind its status as a settler colony. During the first part of the semester cultural aspects like the early history of the colonies of Australia, the independence of the Commonwealth of Australia, its current position in the world, etc. shall be discussed, whereas the second part of the semester will focus on important literary texts from “Down Under” ranging from early colonial to truly postcolonial works, written by both indigenous or (Australian-born) white authors, who include Kate Grenville, Andrew McGahan, Sally Morgan and Patrick White.

Inhalt:

The city is an important issue in American Cultural Studies and has been analyzed from a variety of angles. This Proseminar sets out from the insight that, owing to their complexity and multifariousness, cities can never be entirely understood. By following different approaches, however, we may be able to get closer to what the city can mean to different people. The class will start with a historical overview of the physical and social development of American cities and then turn to cultural assumptions about urban life in the colonial period. The main part of the term will be devoted to perceptions of the city in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The class will read fictional and non-fictional texts engaged with the city, but also look at architecture, painting, and movies. In order to get a good terminological and conceptual grasp of this material, we will also study theoretical writing about urban life and its culture.
