Inhalt:

Das Seminar führt in zentrale methodische Fragestellungen, Grundbegriffe, theoretische Modelle und historische Zusammenhänge des Faches Britische und Amerikanische Kulturwissenschaft ein. Der Kurs findet sowohl in englischer als auch deutscher Sprache statt, um die Studierenden mit beiden Wissenschaftssprachen vertraut zu machen.

The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for the academic pursuit of British and American cultural studies. The course is conducted in both English and German, in order to familiarize the students with the specialized use of both languages.

Lernergebnisse, Kompetenzen/Learning outcomes, Skills
Grundthemen und Fragestellungen der Kulturwissenschaften konsequent mit literarischen Texten und Lektüren zu verbinden, ihre inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, systematisch zu rekonstruieren sowie diese kritisch in Wort und Schrift zu analysieren. Es wird ein erster Überblick in kulturwissenschaftliche Analysemodelle und Fachterminologie gewonnen. Ferner werden grundlegende Kompetenzen sowohl formaler als auch zielsprachlicher Art zur Abfassung einer eigenen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit vermittelt. Die kommunikativen und sozialen Kompetenzen der Studierenden werden durch interaktive und projektbezogene Gruppenarbeit gefordert und gefördert.

To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed, necessary for the composition of each student's own academic essay. Students ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

Am 3. August 2015 (8:15 - 9:45 Uhr) findet eine Wiederholungsklausur für diejenigen Studierenden des Einführungskurses (E1) statt, die den Kurs trotz Mitschreibens der Abschlussklausur nicht bestanden haben oder aufgrund eines ärztlichen Attestes an der Abschlussklausur nicht teilnehmen konnten. Das Attest muss der/m Lehrenden rechtzeitig im Original vorgelegt werden. Die Wiederholungsklausur wird von den jeweiligen Lehrenden gestellt und muss persönlich abgeholt werden. This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, media and technology, America as nature s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.
This course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary readings will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Like Feathered Brushstrokes in the Sand: Reading Asian North American Fiction

This course serves as an introduction to Asian American Studies as an important interdisciplinary field of research. The primary objective of this class is to introduce students to a variety of literary texts by and about Asian Americans that deal with major themes and issues of Asian immigrants in the US and Canada.

We will examine historical and contemporary ties and struggles of Asian Americans from the 19th century until today, and discuss themes such as gender and migration, intergenerational conflict, cultural appropriation, ethnic belonging, and national citizenship. How does a term like “Asian American” affect a community that includes groups and individuals that are often very dissimilar? What are shared characteristics and how are differences maintained and utilized? To answer these and other questions, we will read texts about the internment of Japanese citizens in Canada (Kogawa), about Chinese women becoming Americanized (Tan), and about Korean attempts to assimilate (Lee), as well as texts that address prejudices against Filipinos (Hagedorn) and negotiate Indian identity in New York (Lahiri). We will trace the ugly truth of sinophobia through North-American history and legislation, as seen in personal narratives and collective memory. Last, but not least, we will also examine stereotypes within and about an ethnic group that helped shape US-American and Canadian culture.

Our readings will include several novels, as well as short stories, poems, cartoons, and photographs. This class is a reading exercise (Leseübung), designed to assist you in working through the reading list. Therefore, participants are expected to read a lot. Students are asked to read at least two novels in advance, meaning: before class starts in April. The novels will form the background for most of our discussions, but additional reading will be required during the semester.

Note: Make sure that you order your copy of the novels (e-book or printed) well in advance – preferably before the beginning of the term! It is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions. Your input will be welcome!

As an additional platform to prepare for class and discuss its central topics, the weekly Media Session (each Wednesday, starting at 8 p.m.) will give you the chance to watch a number of movies that are based on the texts we read in this class. Attendance is voluntary, but strongly recommended.

Attention: Participants of this class are strongly encouraged to attend the lecture by Ms. Hilbert (Landeskunde Asia and the Pacific) as a complimentary class to this reading exercise.
The lecture will cover the regions where authors and protagonists discussed in our class originate from, and thus will provide you with in-depth information about the geographical, political, cultural and linguistic characteristics of those countries and their peoples.
