Inhalt:
Nothing is permanent except change. This well-known saying by the Greek philosopher Heraclitus is very much true of language, even though we tend to think of it as something static that can be set down in grammar books and exhaustively listed in dictionaries. Many of us think of language change as something belonging to the distant past, where examples are more prominent. Rather than dealing with old hats, this seminar will however be concerned with relatively recent developments in the 20th and 21st centuries, which implies that their completion may yet be pending and we may at present witness the variation typical of such as situation.

We will focus on grammatical (i.e. morphological and syntactic) examples, such as the s-genitive, adjective gradation, contractions, modal auxiliaries and semi-modals, the perfect, the progressive, the passive, the future, the subjunctive, complex predicates, non-finite clauses, relative clauses etc. Methodological issues will be addressed as well as the question of which factors drive or impede change. We will consider language-internal (functional) forces as well as general trends such as colloquialization, Americanization, densification etc.

It will be shown that some changes are continuations of long-standing trends whereas others have occurred quite unexpectedly. The course will make students realize that English is a changing language, and that we are right in the midst of this permanent flux.

Participants will be asked to present current research in class and to carry out their own small-scale analyses of relevant phenomena in their termpapers.

The Übung that accompanies the Hauptseminar (Wednesdays, 11:00 - 11:45 h) is designed to discuss oral presentations, handouts, empirical analyses and termpaper projects individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.

Description:
The “Middle English Romances” are no clearly defined group of texts. In fact, the anonymously transmitted Middle English tales which are usually considered to be romances are so diverse that every attempt at a brief, general definition is doomed to fail. In this seminar, we will take a closer look at a selection of these stories of love, chivalry, and exemplary heroes some of which are knights of King Arthur’s round table. On the basis of a selection of romances – such as King Horn, Sir Ysumbras, Havelok, Arthour and Merlin, Ywain and Gawain and also the very artful romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – we will speak about features of these texts, their background and intended audience, and, especially for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, about possible interpretations. Although very different in intention and literary capability, some of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales – in particular The Knight’s Tale and Sir Thopas – will be discussed, too. A few romances will be introduced in parts, Alliterative Morte Arthure and Stanzaic Morte Arthur, William of Palerne, and some fifteenth-century prose romances such as The Three Kings’ Sons. All texts will be read in modern translations or (heavily) annotated originals. In addition, selected Middle English passages will be read, translated, and discussed in class. A reader will be provided on Virtueller Campus at the beginning of term. While no knowledge of earlier stages of the English language is required for successful participation in this course, students should bring along both interest in the history of English and exploratory spirit. The Übung, which accompanies the Seminar (Wednesday, 14:15-15:00), is offered for students who want to attain credits in linguistics. It is designed for discussions of linguistic project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.

Inhalt:
Frequency of use is an important factor in the description and development of languages. This seminar will explore its roles in such areas as the evolution of words (e.g. pronouns, neologisms, household vocabulary), grammar (e.g. irregular verbs and nouns; the evolution of modal verbs and inflections), discourse (e.g. turn-taking devices and other discourse markers) and phonology (e.g. weak forms and frequency-induced processes at word boundaries). While the focus of this seminar will be on the English language, principles will be sought that apply cross-linguistically. Therefore, Romance languages, German and typologically unrelated languages will be considered as well.
