Inhalt:

What happens in fictional kitchens (beyond the obvious)? Can recipes be considered literature? Is it possible to read between the lines of a recipe? Can kitchens be a place of empowerment? Thinking about food in literature mostly conjures up images of comfort, domesticity, conviviality accompanied by stereotypical figures like the “Angel in the House”, the Southern “mammy” or the dutiful housewife from the fifties, busy chopping, frying and serving various foods. Fortunately, there are texts that completely subvert these ideas.

In this class we will explore some of the genres where literature and food intersect. We will indeed read “traditional” novels where recipes are mainly just a paratextual element, but in other instances it is going to be difficult to tell where the novel ends and the recipe starts. We visit food-related places where, along with the aforementioned “usual” activities, some other take place, such as politics, uprising, murder, and cannibalism. We will see how food in literature, particularly its preparation, not only touches upon but also deeply influences issues of race, religion, and gender. Reading texts that range from the Victorian era to contemporary authors, we will focus on stories where food plays a prominent role, and that take place in a particularly hard time, especially (but not only) World War II and the Great Depression.

Concerning our methodology, we will work with the definition of literary text, building a theoretical background which includes theorists who wrote about literature and art in general (for instance Viktor Shklovsky and Wolfgang Iser) but also some very kitchen-specific theories, like Claude Lévi-Strauss' culinary triangle (which, for your information, is not about a ménage à trois in a kitchen), just to mention one notorious example.

“Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit.” (The Subtle Knife) Philip Pullman’s dusty trilogy His Dark Materials fights for human freedom in furthering knowing, wise and strong readers and therefore humans and is hence unsurprisingly dusted by the church whose institutionalised and oppressive authority is severely criticised by the author and his narrator for its origins in ignorance, obedience and submission. Institutionalised and oppressive authority – be it church, government or elitist educational system – is challenged by unsparingly demanding the readers’ active involvement in Lyra’s journey to knowledge, to free and critical thought which scrutinises the authority’s major means of oppression (ideology and power) and the passive acceptance of authority. Based on criticisms of ideology (Mikhail Bakhtin, Roland Barthes) and power (Michel Foucault) and the three pillars of fantasy literature (magic, science and religion), we will scrutinise ideologies and powers in the many worlds of His Dark Materials, welcome Dust in our thoughts and actions and hence contribute to a Republic of Heaven in which tolerance, open-mindedness and dialogue undermine and replace intolerance, narrow-mindedness and monologue.

Our discussions will necessitate excellent knowledge of Philip Pullman’s trilogy His Dark Materials (1995-2000). Knowledge of Pullman’s document collection Lyra’s Oxford (2003) and his novella Once Upon a Time in the North (2008) will be appreciated. Discussions will commence in the first session of the seminar. Additional reading will be made available in VC.

Inhalt:

The Restoration period in English history started in 1660 with the restoration of monarchy in England under Charles II (1660-85) and ended ca. 1710. During this time, society and culture was characterised by abundance, luxury and looseness, contrasting the more serious time of the Interregnum and the Civil War that shaped England between 1649 and 1660. In literature, this new levity was celebrated especially in the theatres which were re-opened again after a ban of 18 years during the Puritan rule. The most popular theatrical genre was the Restoration Comedy with its wittiness and playfulness.

In this course we are going to have a look at typical motifs and concepts in Restoration Comedy. To do so, the plays listed below must be read by the beginning of the semester. This course is open to all guest auditors wanting to study English drama. Please register via the VC, which will go online in the beginning of August.

Inhalt:

Similar to, but also strikingly different from its Southern neighbor, Canada is a nation of cultural pluralism and literary diversity with a bilingual administration and a multiethnic population. In this class we will discuss texts from the second half of the twentieth century in order to gain a deeper understanding of Canada’s literature and culture. For this purpose, we will consult material from different fields of every-day life in Canada today: politics, arts, lifestyle magazines, movies, music, and sports. Our primary reading will consist of four novels (see below) and we will also attend the public readings by the authors of the two first texts on our reading list. Additionally, we will then meet the writers again for a workshop in class!

Note: This will be a very reading-intensive class, so students are asked to read two texts in advance, meaning: before class starts in October. The novels will form the background for most of our discussions, but additional reading will be provided during the semester.

Inhalt:

In 2006, the making of Monica Ali’s novel Brick Lane into a film caused the first major political uproar in the United Kingdom since the publication of Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses in 1989. The controversy about its representation of London’s Bangladeshi immigrant community, and the question whether Ali, daughter of an English mother and a Bangladeshi immigrant who had never experienced hardship in her life, was 'qualified' to describe the situation of Bangladeshi women in Brick Lane, parted the literary nation and brought no less a critic than Rushdie himself on the stage in her defense.

Discussing Brick Lane along with Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things and Bharati Mukherjee’s Jasmine, as well as works by Zadie Smith and Jhumpa Lahiri, in this seminar we will explore the effects of colonialism and migration on colonial subjects and their children, who often leave for the country of the colonizer. While some of them return, others stay to start families and build new lives. We will discuss how South Asian and Caribbean immigrants to the United Kingdom and the United States experience and deal with the process of migration; how they relate to concepts such as home, family, and nation; and how they define and express their identities. Comparing the experiences of first and second generation migrants we will try to figure out whether and how these differ from one generation to the next, and whether there are any differences between their experiences in the country of the former colonizer, Britain, or the more ‘neutral’ America.

Dramatic art arose as a complement to, perhaps also as an antidote to, war. (Acts of War, xv)

Despite the formal withdrawal of all U.S. combat troops in December 2011, the second Iraq War and its aftermath are still controversial topics in the United States. Since the late 2000s, but especially in the last couple of years, an increasing number of texts, both autobiographical and fictional in nature, dealing with the Iraq War have been written and published. A closer look at this emerging literary genre, and what these texts say about the culture of war in the United States, is therefore an important and exciting task for American literary studies.

This course aims to examine not only autobiographies by soldiers deployed to Iraq, but also fictional texts about the War. A primary focus will be on the representation of the War itself, but also on the way in which these texts engage with and represent the more problematic issues connected to the War, starting from the controversy about Weapons of Mass Destruction before the start of the invasion, to the Abu Ghraib scandal, and the so-called War on Terror in general. Another focus will be the comparison of these contemporary texts to American literature about earlier wars, especially the Vietnam War, but also the two World Wars and the American Civil War, and the analysis of how American writing about war has developed over the centuries.

This interdisciplinary course has been designed especially for North-American exchange students and German students, inviting them to study each other s cultures together. Readings and classroom discussion will be both in English and German.

During the 1970s scholars of literary and cultural studies in the U.S. as well as Germany first began to examine the lives, works and representations of individuals identifying as/identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, building the foundations of the multifaceted academic field today known as LGBTQ or Queer Studies. This German-American seminar will set out to explore some of the major questions and issues raised by queer theory and the LGBTQ arts in the United States and Germany. While the theoretical focus of the course will lie on U.S. American critical writings from the 1980s onward, the list of primary texts will span the 20th and the 21st century, contain both American and German works, and include literary texts, comics, film, photography as well as painting.
