course description
Shakespeare and his works are often discussed in seminars but usually with a focus on either a literary-cultural or a linguistic perspective.
In this seminar we will take a different approach. Collaborating across the various disciplines of our department, we will look at Shakespeare and his works from different perspectives, thus not only presenting a multifaceted approach to Shakespeare but also hopefully - providing the basis for future teachers to successfully teach Shakespeare at school.
In the linguistic part of the seminar, we will see that around 1600 the English language was in a state of flux and underwent some of its most radical structural changes. More often than not, parallels between Shakespeare's language and present-day German can be revealed. We will discuss all levels of linguistic organization, i.e. phonology, morphology, syntax and the lexicon. Overall, this should help future teachers of English (as well as their prospective students) to better understand not only the grammars of the two languages but also the underlying reasons for mistakes commonly made by speakers whose first language is German.
The next class will introduce classic approaches to Shakespeare s plays from the perspective of literary studies. Taking Macbeth as our prime example, we will study Shakespeare s use of historical and literary sources and of stylistic devices, particularly metaphor, metre and the juxtaposition of dialogue and soliloquy.

From a British Cultural Studies perspective the seminar will first position Shakespeare s plays in the context of the popular culture, folk traditions, and festivities of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. In a second step, we will look at Shakespeare comics as a popular medium of our own time that can profitably be used in the classroom.
From an American Cultural Studies perspective we will focus on what happens when Shakespeare s plays not only are turned into movies, but American high school movies. Taking The Taming of the Shrew/Ten Things I Hate about You (1999) and Othello/O (2001) as our prime examples, we will study the adaptation process and find out how the alterations can be utilized for the EFL classroom.
From the perspective of Language Pedagogy we will discuss the question of whether Shakespeare should or should not be dealt with at school and the challenges that go along with teaching Shakespeare in the EFL classroom. We will also look at various approaches of how to teach Shakespeare and critically discuss them.

Students attending this class can choose whether they want to earn credits in literary studies, cultural studies, linguistics or language pedagogy or for the newly established KulturPLUS module. They must be willing to do regular reading assignments and give a short presentation (including a handout, typically to be prepared in co-operation with another student). In their term papers, students may wish to check hypotheses from the literature by working with Shakespearean texts (inter alia, the complete works of Shakespeare in electronic, machine-readable form).

Inhalt:

The grammar of English (its morphology and especially its syntax) provides no prefabricated, unique ways of saying (or writing) something you want to express, but rather offers a variety of grammatical variants with identical or similar meanings. For instance, without implying a meaning difference, you can say either of the variants:

(1) The event is aimed at children and parents / parents and children.
(2) Bob and Bill have / They’ve met before.
(3) They lighted / lit the stack of wood from below.
(4) He was an alive, happy soul / ?a happy, alive soul.
(5) He checked the car whether / to see whether it was in good condition.
(6) I prevented her going / from going.
(7) Supposing that / Supposing you had good marks, would you go to university?
(8) Sandy picked up the paper / picked the paper up.
(9) He had to give the FBI his fingerprints / his fingerprints to the FBI.
(10) The other person’s nose / nose of the other person was broken.

On the other hand, there are subtle meaning differences, mirrored in the grammatical differences, between the following:

(11) They heard the clatter of hoofs / hooves from the outside.
(12) The shed burned / burnt down.
(13) The teacher helped him complete / to complete his homework.

What is interesting about grammatical variation phenomena such as (1)-(13) is the fact that they are not random, but allow us to gather insights into the ways speakers and hearers process language: Cognitive processes in language use involve an intricate network of interacting functional factors that may reinforce or counteract each other, such as semantic, phonological and various processing-related effects (e.g. those of frequency, complexity, economy, givenness). Since most of these are linguistic universals working independently of time and a particular language, they afford insights into the forces that design and shape grammar and drive linguistic change.

Grammatical variation and change have been at the focus of linguistic interest for the past few decades. Their investigation has been facilitated by the use of ever-increasing electronic text collections (corpora) in which we can explore and measure native speaker behaviour in cases where the grammar provides two or more options. An analysis of the forces underlying native speaker intuitions will have the useful side effect of sensitizing students to grammatical choices in English as a foreign language.

Students in this seminar will be expected to present a case study based on a research article and to carry out and report on a related corpus-based small-scale research project in their termpapers.

The Übung that accompanies the Seminar (Thursdays, 9:15 – 10:00 h) is designed to discuss oral presentations, handouts, practical tasks and termpaper projects individually and/or in small groups. Personal arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Thus, clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.

Description:

Set against the backdrop of the Trojan War, the love story of Troilus and Criseyde was to become one of the favourite topics in medieval literature. The story was adapted in French and Italian before it was tackled by Geoffrey Chaucer in the mid 1380s. This literary and linguistic masterpiece is the focus of attention in this seminar. We will discuss both the linguistic and the literary makeup of the text on the basis of close reading. Starting from there and always with consideration of the linguistic background, we will also investigate central topics of medieval literature such as providence, fate and free will; human (courtly) love and divine love; friendship; and the role of women.
The Übung, which accompanies the Hauptseminar (Wednesday, 14:15-15:00) is designed to discuss project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided. The first Übung session will not take place before the second week of term. Further information will be given in the first session of the seminar.
Before our first meeting, students are asked to familiarize themselves with the story as told by Chaucer in a modern-language translation, either in Modern English (Coghill 1971; Windeatt 1998) or Modern German (Obst / Schleburg 2000). Warning: Translations which are available on the internet are not reliable!
The critical edition which we will use in class is The Riverside Chaucer, ed. by Benson et al. (1987); the original text and other material will be made availabe on Virtueller Campus.
