Inhalt:

The United States are often described as the land of opportunity, the place where people from all over the world hope to be given a new chance. Consequently, there are plenty of success stories to be found in American culture: the ugly duckling who becomes a beautiful celebrity; the nerdy underdog who becomes the richest man on the planet; or the poor Jewish immigrant from a small market town in Upper Franconia who invents a garment that becomes a global fashion staple.

However, the rags-to-riches myth and the cultural narrative of the American Dream are as much exclusive as they are inclusive, thus encouraging new beginnings and personal aspirations, but also breaking individuals and their hopes and dreams. This class will follow the trail of the rags-to-riches myth through US-American history, tracing its footsteps in a fast-paced culture that grants little room for failure and promotes material success above all other accomplishments.

Most of the material will be provided via the Virtual Campus ahead of each session. Students are, however, required to purchase and read some texts (see list below) before the beginning of the semester – either in print or as e-book. Make sure that you order your copy of the books well in advance! It is also important for participants to do the assignments, attend class regularly, and actively contribute to class discussions. You are welcome to bring in materials from outside of class (newspaper articles, handouts etc.) and you can also plan class room activities e.g. mock debates. Your input is welcome!

Inhalt:

In this seminar, we will familiarise ourselves with important Scottish poems and novels, all of which can be described as belonging to the Scottish literary canon. At first, we will discuss the narrative poem “Tam o’ Shanter” (1791) by Robert Burns in terms of its effect of popularising Scottish folk tales. Further, lyrical works by Hugh MacDiarmid and Sorley MacLean will be looked into: While MacDiarmid uses synthetic Scots in his “Eemis Stan” (1925), MacLean composed the original version of “Hallaig” (1954) in Gaelic. The cultural-linguistic implications of poems like these will be of special interest to our class.
Apart from lyrical works, novels will be in the focus of this seminar. James Hogg’s Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824) revolves around the controversial role Calvinism played in Scottish society and history. Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped (1886) deals with another painful chapter of Scottish history: the Jacobite rising of 1745. Finally, Janice Galloway’s The Trick is to Keep Breathing (1989) will be analysed in depth – a novel which focusses on postmodern themes such as depression, trauma, and alienation.

If you want to take part in this class, you must have read the three novels before the seminar starts.

Inhalt:

The faculty of memory and its (mal-)functions have been objects of study since long before the so-called ‘memory boom’ of the late 20th century. The study of memory has been pursued by diverse disciplines from philosophy to neuroscience to literature that involve a great variety of different approaches. In Memory Studies these are all brought together by topic rather than common methodology. What has been particularly influential for the field, is the transferral of the characteristics of individual memory to the level of culture. Memory as a collective phenomenon is considered the basis for the construction of collective identity and the passing on of culture. Especially for subfields like Holocaust or Trauma Studies, cultural memory is a relevant, yet not uncontroversial, concept. In this course we want to gain an overview and ultimately a deeper understanding of this multi-faceted, interdisciplinary academic field. The seminar will provide an introduction to the origins of the study of memory and in-depth study of basic concepts and theories. By discussing key theoretical texts, we will identify the main concerns, controversies and new developments of the field. These findings will be applied to literary texts and cultural phenomena, e.g. the influence of new media technologies on remembering. Apart from that, we will deal with memory in relation to trauma and testimony, ideas of transgenerational and transcultural memory, memory and place as well as the representation of memory in architecture and popular culture.
