Inhalt:

When HBO decided in 2015 to turn Michael Crichton’s Westworld into a television series with Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy as producers and writers, AI was by no means a groundbreaking or new concept. Rather, the series took the premise of Crichton’s screenplay from 1973 and turned it upside down. What if we as humans actually root for the very thing that wants to kill us? Sam Harris, neuroscientist and philosopher, argues that it’s simply enjoyable to think about, getting killed by an AI; that “death by sci-fi is fun”. The last decades have seen a rise in narratives that focus on the relationship between humans and AIs but even though a high number of those narratives feature AI as a menace, movies like Spike Jonze’s Her or Disney’s Big Hero 6 reveal a different side to what Harris calls “humanity’s biggest threat.”
In this class, we will analyse how AI is portrayed in literature, movies and TV series and observe how humanity constructs itself and the corresponding AI.

Inhalte/Contents
Die Übung/das Kolloquium wendet sich vornehmlich an Studierende der Britischen Kultur in höheren Semestern. Es versteht sich als offenes wissenschaftliches Forum, in dem B.A.- und M.A.-Arbeiten, Magisterarbeiten, Dissertationen oder andere kulturwissenschaftlich relevante Projekte auch unter Beteiligung von Gästen zur Diskussion stehen. Zugleich bietet dieses Forum auch die Möglichkeit, eher formal orientierte Fragestellungen der Praxis zu diskutieren (z. B. Präsentationsformen bei Vorträgen/Referaten, Redaktion von Texten).

Zudem werden berufsorientierte Veranstaltungen durchgeführt, die den Studierenden Einblick in verschiedene Berufsmöglichkeiten geben sollen.
Teilnahme an dem Kolloquium und den Exkursionen erfolgt auf persönliche Einladung.

Inhalte für Vertiefungsmodul: ein Spezialgebiet. In diesem Modul werden die Kenntnisse einer weiteren Epoche bzw. einer weiteren kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellung vermittelt, die mit eigener regelmäßiger Lektüre begleitet wird. Zudem werden berufsrelevante Schlüsselqualifikationen (z.B. Präsentations- und Kommunikationstechniken) ausdifferenziert und vertieft. Mündliche und schriftliche Präsentation eigener Ergebnisse wird eingeübt.

The colloquium is intended primarily for advanced students of British culture. It is to be understood as an open academic forum in which B.A. and M.A. essays, Magister and other dissertations, or other projects in the realm of cultural studies, can be discussed in the presence of participating guests. This forum offers at the same time the possibility to discuss more formal questions of academic practice (e.g. presentational methods for lectures and presentations, composition of texts).

In addition, sessions will be organized with a more vocational orientation, intended to give the students insight into various professional possibilities.

Participation in the colloquium by personal invitation.

Contents "Vertiefungsmodul": An area of expert knowledge. This module allows students to acquire knowledge of an additional period and of an additional cultural studies problem, all accompanied by appropriate regular reading. Furthermore, certain key professional skills (e.g. presentational and communicational techniques) will be refined and deepened. There will be practice in the spoken and written presentation of the students’ research results

Course Description:

European cultures have always marginalized their strangest members in a bid to reinforce norms and identities. But by the early twentieth century, the asylum gates were rattling in unsettling new ways. The emergence of modern psychiatry in the 1870s had challenged old models of classification; both evolutionary theories and the nascent ‘science’ of psychoanalysis were questioning our innate morality and rationality; and down in the street, rapid urbanization seemed to be intensifying symptoms of such ‘modern’ disorders as schizophrenia and neurasthenia.

We’ll select from a range of representations of madness and mental illness in German and English literary cultures in the twentieth century. We begin with a theoretical groundwork, combining carefully selected readings from Foucault’s History of Madness (1961) with a sample of Freud’s psychoanalytic writings (either Bruchstücke einer Hysterie-Analyse (1906) or Jenseits des Lustprinzips (1920). Starting with the topic ‘Unruly minds, wayward bodies’, we shall discuss Alfred Döblin’s ‘case study’ short stories, ‘Die Ermordung einer Butterblume’ and ‘Die Tänzerin und der Leib’ (1913) in comparison with D. H. Lawrence’s tale of military pathologies, ‘The Prussian General’ (1914). Gottfried Benn’s cycle of short stories Gehirne (1915), in turn, will present us with an unsettlingly lyrical account of mental collapse in the face of the modern city. If there is time and interest, we shall then consider how insanity infects an entire society in the landmark silent film Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920).

As we move forward into late modernism, Irish playwright Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot (1952) sees the modern condition itself suffused with a mad absurdity. We then turn to the pathologies of gender politics in Doris Lessing’s ‘To Room 19’ (1963): a pitch-dark narrative trapped beneath the maddening weight of patriarchy, which we’ll read in conjunction with the short story that inspired it, Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ (1892). The topic (and course) may conclude with the postcolonial feminist prequel to Jane Eyre, Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea (1966). Could madness ever be defined and confined — or did the twentieth century see it become more pervasive and elusive than ever?

Inhalt:

This course aims to assist students in writing their first term paper in literary or cultural studies in Bamberg. We will discuss general formal aspects and content related criteria of an academic paper, such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Primarily, however, we will practice how to choose a topic, how to develop a coherent structure, how to involve theoretical frameworks, and how to adhere to the MLA citation rules. Finally, we will discuss the different types of source material that are suitable for the list of references of your paper. Students have the chance to present a provisional outline in a closed discussion forum, where they will receive feedback from fellow students and the instructor.

This course is also addressed at students who are preparing or working at a BA-thesis in American Literature or Culture. Therefore, this course provides the guidance sessions for the BA thesis (Betreuungsübung) for students in the BA programs who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies. It assists students in the preparation of their final paper, and gives them an opportunity to discuss their work with other students. BA-candidates will present parts of their final paper, offering it for discussion and feedback. If you are planning to attend this class, make sure that the instructor will also be your thesis advisor. Inhalt:

Ever since the first out gay character was depicted in a 1971 episode of the American sitcom All in the Family, members of the LGBT community have vied for representation on the medium that defined the 20th century. Through the 1970s and 1980s, queer characters on TV were only far and few in between, usually stereotypical, and mostly gay, white men. When in 1989, on the drama series thirtysomething, two men were depicted “the morning after,” the backlash to the show’s network ABC was big enough that the loss of advertisers meant it was cut from syndication. Yet, over the course of the 1990s, LGBT representation on American television steadily increased and got more varied despite such setbacks, and 1997 can be seen as a watershed year – not least of all because of Ellen DeGeneres’ public outing on her own sitcom. The last 20 years have seen a steady stream of out gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters on television, with the help of cable TV, and lately, streaming platforms like Netflix, bringing to the screen more realistic depictions of what it means and has meant to be queer in the United States of America. German TV by comparison, because of its much smaller industry and lack of international relevance, has made fewer strides, although it has equally seen depictions of LGBT people since the 1970s, and several groundbreaking examples have also helped to shape an understanding of queer life in Germany.

This course wants to engage critically with a variety of TV series that have depicted LGBT characters over the past 45 years, looking at both the narrative arcs of recurring or main characters, as well as stand-out single episodes. Students will prepare presentations on these case studies, and will have to read secondary source material that has engaged with them to do so. The class will also situate these television series in a larger framework of queer studies, and will discuss key texts by J. Jack Halberstam, Judith Butler and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick. It wants to give equal amounts of time to discuss the depiction of gay men, lesbian women, and bisexual and transgender, as well as genderqueer people, and highlight the similarities and differences in their struggle for accurate representation and overcoming stereotypes. Further, it wants to put special focus on intersectionality, i.e. how race and class complicate these narratives. Via the medium of television, it will thus be possible to examine how cultural representations of LGBT persons and lives have changed in US and German society. The transnational comparison of the two cultures and how they have dealt with the issue will also make it possible to highlight the different ways in which LGBT rights have shaped up in these two Western nations until today.

This interdisciplinary course has been designed especially for North-American exchange students and German students, inviting them to study each other s cultures together. Readings and classroom discussion will be both in English and German.

The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for the academic pursuit of British and American cultural studies. The course is conducted in both English and German, in order to familiarize the students with the specialized academic use of both languages.

Grundthemen und Fragestellungen der Kulturwissenschaften konsequent mit literarischen Texten und Lektüren zu verbinden, ihre inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, systematisch zu rekonstruieren sowie diese kritisch in Wort und Schrift zu analysieren. Es wird ein erster Überblick in kulturwissenschaftliche Analysemodelle und Fachterminologie gewonnen. Ferner werden grundlegende Kompetenzen sowohl formaler als auch zielsprachlicher Art zur Abfassung einer eigenen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit vermittelt. Die kommunikativen und sozialen Kompetenzen der Studierenden werden durch interaktive und projektbezogene Gruppenarbeit gefordert und gefördert.

To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed, necessary for the composition of each student's own academic essay. Students ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, class and economic success, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, America as nature’s nation; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary readings will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

The United States are often described as the land of opportunity, the place where people from all over the world hope to be given a new chance. Consequently, there are plenty of success stories to be found in American culture: the ugly duckling who becomes a beautiful celebrity; the nerdy underdog who becomes the richest man on the planet; or the poor Jewish immigrant from a small market town in Upper Franconia who invents a garment that becomes a global fashion staple.

However, the rags-to-riches myth and the cultural narrative of the American Dream are as much exclusive as they are inclusive, thus encouraging new beginnings and personal aspirations, but also breaking individuals and their hopes and dreams. This class will follow the trail of the rags-to-riches myth through US-American history, tracing its footsteps in a fast-paced culture that grants little room for failure and promotes material success above all other accomplishments.

Most of the material will be provided via the Virtual Campus ahead of each session. Students are, however, required to purchase and read some texts (see list below) before the beginning of the semester – either in print or as e-book. Make sure that you order your copy of the books well in advance! It is also important for participants to do the assignments, attend class regularly, and actively contribute to class discussions. You are welcome to bring in materials from outside of class (newspaper articles, handouts etc.) and you can also plan class room activities e.g. mock debates. Your input is welcome!

Inhalt:

In this seminar, we will familiarise ourselves with important Scottish poems and novels, all of which can be described as belonging to the Scottish literary canon. At first, we will discuss the narrative poem “Tam o’ Shanter” (1791) by Robert Burns in terms of its effect of popularising Scottish folk tales. Further, lyrical works by Hugh MacDiarmid and Sorley MacLean will be looked into: While MacDiarmid uses synthetic Scots in his “Eemis Stan” (1925), MacLean composed the original version of “Hallaig” (1954) in Gaelic. The cultural-linguistic implications of poems like these will be of special interest to our class.
Apart from lyrical works, novels will be in the focus of this seminar. James Hogg’s Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824) revolves around the controversial role Calvinism played in Scottish society and history. Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped (1886) deals with another painful chapter of Scottish history: the Jacobite rising of 1745. Finally, Janice Galloway’s The Trick is to Keep Breathing (1989) will be analysed in depth – a novel which focusses on postmodern themes such as depression, trauma, and alienation.

If you want to take part in this class, you must have read the three novels before the seminar starts.

Inhalt:

The faculty of memory and its (mal-)functions have been objects of study since long before the so-called ‘memory boom’ of the late 20th century. The study of memory has been pursued by diverse disciplines from philosophy to neuroscience to literature that involve a great variety of different approaches. In Memory Studies these are all brought together by topic rather than common methodology. What has been particularly influential for the field, is the transferral of the characteristics of individual memory to the level of culture. Memory as a collective phenomenon is considered the basis for the construction of collective identity and the passing on of culture. Especially for subfields like Holocaust or Trauma Studies, cultural memory is a relevant, yet not uncontroversial, concept. In this course we want to gain an overview and ultimately a deeper understanding of this multi-faceted, interdisciplinary academic field. The seminar will provide an introduction to the origins of the study of memory and in-depth study of basic concepts and theories. By discussing key theoretical texts, we will identify the main concerns, controversies and new developments of the field. These findings will be applied to literary texts and cultural phenomena, e.g. the influence of new media technologies on remembering. Apart from that, we will deal with memory in relation to trauma and testimony, ideas of transgenerational and transcultural memory, memory and place as well as the representation of memory in architecture and popular culture.

Inhalt:

The term “reproductive justice” was coined in 1994 by black American feminists. As a concept, it moves the center of attention and activism away from reproductive rights and the narrow focus on pro-choice (the legal right to abortion, symbolized by the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v Wade) both towards an intersectional analysis of race, class, gender, sexuality, nationality and age, and towards activism for enhanced public resources and governmental spending, especially when it comes to comprehensive (reproductive) health care, jobs and wages, education and child care, housing, civil rights and social services.
In this compact course, we will investigate some of these issues and look at academic and socio-political discourses as well as a broad variety of cultural texts (e.g. songs, novels, graphic novels, podcasts, journalism, memoirs, film and TV-series) to highlight and discuss current RJ discourses in North America.

Inhalt:

What do gardens have to do with sexuality, empire, race, class, environmental degradation, the history of poetry, the social role of religion, and the future of art? In discussion of various literary, critical, theoretical, and eco-critical texts, we will consider the broad reach of garden writing and garden practice over the course of two seminar weekends (Blockseminar).

While based in literary readings (see required texts), the course supplements and contextualizes these with other readings and websites. We will also consider broader issues and discourses connecting humans and the environment.

Please buy the following book, start reading as soon as possible, and bring it to every class (required): Garden Poems, ed. by John Hollander (between 19 and 25 Euros).

Please Note: There will be NO VC-Course for this course, since most of the required readings will be in the book by John Hollander. Therefore, please make sure to buy the book!

Inhalt:

The American presidency forms a central institution and pillar of the American political system, and individual presidents have shaped American and international history in powerful ways. As such, the American presidency and the individuals who have held this office – from George Washington to Barack Obama – hold a prominent place in America’s historical memory and its literary/cultural imagination, and the distinction of the two is often blurry.
This upper level seminar addresses the American Presidency in a decidedly interdisciplinary fashion, combining theoretical concepts and approaches from the fields of History and Historiography with those of American Literary and Cultural Studies. From this combined perspective, we will discuss key presidential figures, such as George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Lyndon B. Johnson, Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama, in the historical contexts that have shaped their work and that have been shaped by them – by their actual achievements as much as by their visions. We will also discuss the changing role of the First Lady, with a focus on Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton, and Michelle Obama. Our readings will include historical documents, inaugural addresses, and speeches, as well as poems, short stories, novels and autobiographies, and a number of motion pictures, biopics, and parts of popular TV series.

Organization:

This compact seminar (Blockseminar), taught by Prof. Christine Gerhardt (American Studies) and Prof. Sabine Freitag (Modern and Contemporary History), offers a unique chance to study a formative aspects of American political culture in the special atmosphere of a study retreat in the French Alps (Chalet Giersch, Manigod), from August 12-19, 2018. We can accommodate 18 students (ideally 9 from History, 9 from English and American Studies).

Requirements:

The seminar will be held in German and English, so students need to be able to read and discuss texts in both languages. Each student will give a 20-minute presentation and write a final research paper.

Inhalt:

It almost goes without saying that such a vast subject as “Religion in American Life” cannot be covered comprehensively in one university course. This seminar adopts a two-pronged approach: on the one hand, it attempts to provide an overview of the main directions and debates in American religious life, among them “the relationship between Church and State”, “Fundamentalism vs. Modernism”, “Mainline Protestantism vs. Evangelicalism”, “religion and race” and “religion and the media”. On the other, it will highlight a few specific texts, people, and movements that have left an indelible mark on American religious culture, e.g. essays from The Fundamentals, Billy Graham’s sermons, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s last speech “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”; Calvary Chapel pastor Chuck Smith, flamboyant televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, and Waco cult “prophet” David Koresh; The Social Gospel, The Nation of Islam, and the Promise Keepers. While most of the seminar will be concerned with the 20^th and 21^st centuries, the first sessions will provide some background information on the colonial period, as well as the 18^th and 19^th centuries. Religious traditions outside Christianity will be addressed only briefly. Those who want to gain some more insights about the history of Judaism in the US may be referred to the lecture course “Jewish-American Literature and Culture” (Tuesday, 12-14).
