Anforderungen: Regelmäßige Lektüre, Bearbeitung von Übungsblättern, Teilnahme an Tutorat und Workshops, Abschlussklausur.
- Inhalt:
- This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

- Description:
Would you, as a traveller in time, be able to talk to Geoffrey Chaucer, who died more than 600 years ago? Would you understand his English, and he yours? And what about the author of Beowulf, for instance, who lived some further 400 years before Chaucer? You would certainly have many words in common, and both the author of Beowulf and you, for instance, could understand the Old English sentence He swam west in storm and wind and frost. But then he (or she?) would have to explain to you that leode means 'people' (compare German Leute) and Chaucer would be puzzled by the word and concept of the internet, or even hair-dryer, for example.
For all those with exploratory spirit and interest in the earlier stages of the English language but not necessarily with previous knowledge of them this guided tour will prepare the ground to venture on their own paths of discovery of the forms of the language from which modern English developed. You will find out about similarities with and differences to modern English (and also German), regarding sounds, words, grammar and meaning. At the end of the semester, you will be able to answer the questions asked at the beginning of this description in much more detail and you might actually be able to talk to Chaucer; given that a time machine has been invented by then. As stated above, knowledge of earlier stages of the English language are not required for successful participation in this class.

Informationen für Studierende des Bacherlorstudiengangs "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft":
Die Veranstaltung kann nach vorheriger Absprache mit der Dozentin für Studierende des Bacherlorstudiengangs "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" als Seminar (6 ECTS) für das Aufbaumodul 1 „Sprache und Gesellschaft“ eingebracht werden. In diesem Fall muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung wie auch die FlexNow-Prüfungsanmeldung über den FlexNow-Zugang "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" erfolgen.
- Inhalt:
- Language is our most important social activity. Analysing only its sounds, grammar and the meaning of its words does not tell us the whole story about what we mean with what we say, and why we choose to say it in one way rather than another.
Pragmatics brings into focus the aspects of language use that are often abstracted from in other fields of linguistics, such as the speaker’s and addressee’s intentions, emotions and beliefs, or the situational, social and cultural context of an utterance.
The goal of the course is to provide students with the basic concepts of pragmatics, using current examples of language use – from everyday conversations to journalism, politics, entertainment and literature:
- Deixis: How do we use (verbal and non-verbal) gestures to refer to our environment?
- Inference and presupposition: What information do we take for granted?
- The co-operative principle: How do conversations work? When do they break down?
- Speech acts: How to use a question as a threat (Have you ever had your nose broken?), and a statement as a command (Someone’s grammar skills could be improved.)
- Politeness: How do we address other people and ask favours from each other without causing offense? How do cultures differ in their strategies (“Brits are too polite, Americans are too shallow, Germans are too rude” etc.)?
- Conversational styles: How do we know when it is our turn to speak? Are interruptions, overlaps and silences always awkward?
- Humour: How do jokes work? Why do sitcoms always feature at least one protagonist with questionable social skills?
- Critical discourse analysis: How do the media, politicians, advertising, and everyone else around us try to sell us their side of a story? (And how to do the same yourself.)
Students preparing for their Staatsexamen, in which pragmatics can be selected as a topic, are welcome to join the course as guests. You do not have to register via FlexNow, but please contact your lecturer by email beforehand.

- Inhalt:
- The seminar will introduce students to the field of contrastive linguistics. We will first discuss the aims, methods and subject-matter of contrastive linguistics, and basic notions such as equivalence, interference, interlanguage will be dealt with. Later on, selected aspects of English and German on different linguistic levels (phonetics/phonolgy, morphology, syntax, semantics, lexis) will be analysed and compared in more detail.
Whenever possible, it is intended to discuss the relevance of contrastive linguistics for foreign language learning.

- Inhalt:
- It goes without saying that rather than speaking of one "English", it is more adequate to conceive of multiple "Englishes" or at least of English as a pluricentric language. In this class, we'll take a synchronic (and partly diachronic) perspective on the fact that English is by no means a monolithic entity, with variation on all linguistic levels.
In addition to general processes at work in language change (such as language contact, standardization, and grammaticalization), variation in present-day varieties of English (such as standard varieties, traditional dialects and postcolonial Englishes) is hugely influenced by factors such as age, gender, and social class, among others.
The linguistic (sub-)discipline focusing on this area is called sociolinguistics, and we'll discuss central notions, such as variable, variant, speech community, overt and covert prestige, stigmatization, social networks etc. In addition, we'll assess the merits of classic sociolinguistic studies and will critically examine different research methods used.

- Inhalt:
- Journalistic media are an everyday resource, providing information about events outside of our immediate horizon of experience. Hence journalism is regarded as the most important textual system of modernity.
This course approaches journalism from a linguistic perspective to explore what exactly the features of this textual system are. Throughout the semester we will contrast the compositional structure of different journalistic genres (e.g. news, feature, interview, and commentary), and discuss how their communicative modes differ depending on the publishing context. We will illustrate how journalistic language differs between various newspapers (e.g. the THE GUARDIAN or THE SUN), and how communication is shaped by technological variables, if we compare print to broadcast or online journalism.
In order to explore these aspects hands-on, this course will familiarize students with qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis (such as (critical) discourse analysis and register analysis), and will introduce them to relevant broader concepts (such as audience design, multimodality, and general principles and features of written and spoken communication).

- This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master’s theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Ergänzungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in using specific sources of information and technologies as well as in collecting, analysing and visualizing their own empirical data. The topics treated will include aspects of academic writing (handling secondary literature, referencing), the analysis of linguistic corpora and other databases, the use of online dictionaries, the construction of questionnaires, the analysis of audio-recorded data, the interpretation of experiments, etc.

- Inhalt:
- Innerhalb von nicht mehr als 40 bis 50 Generationen, die zwischen der Herrschaft von König Alfred und der Gegenwart liegen, hat sich das Englische so stark verändert, dass es beim Vergleich eines altenglischen mit einem neuenglischen Text gleichen Inhalts kaum mehr als dieselbe Sprache zu erkennen ist. Viele Bereiche des Sprachsystems waren extremen Veränderungsprozessen unterworfen. Diese Tatsache und die relativ zahlreich erhaltenen Zeugnisse früherer Sprachzustände, z.B. verschiedene Bibelübersetzungen, machen das Englische zu einem lohnenden Forschungsgegenstand für die historische Linguistik.
Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute. Neben grundlegenden Aspekten der historischen Linguistik werden Kontinuität und Wandel vor allem in den Bereichen der Phonologie, der Morphologie, der Syntax und des Lexikons beleuchtet. Dabei gewinnen die Studierenden vertiefte Einblicke in den historischen Werdegang der englischen Sprache im Besonderen und in Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Sprachwandels im Allgemeinen.

3. Anforderungen für Modul(teil)prüfung:

- Inhalt:
- Bei der Wahl Ihres Themas im schriftlichen Staatsexamen in Linguistik haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an diesem Repetitorium teilnehmen, um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte sowie des Mittelenglischen (und gegebenenfalls auch des Altenglischen) zu vertiefen. In dieser Übung werden zum einen theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, zum anderen geht es um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen (und altenglischen) Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen. Kursunterlagen werden auf dem "Virtuellen Campus" bereitgestellt. Das Passwort wird zu Vorlesungsbeginn bekanntgegeben. Die mittelenglischen Klausuren bauen immer auf eine stark eingegrenzte Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers auf, speziell aus den Canterbury Tales und aus Troilus and Criseyde, woraus zunächst eine Passage zu übersetzen ist. Daher wird zusätzlich ein Intensivblockkurs Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten (0,7 SWS). Nicht-modularisiert Studierende sind für die Vorbereitung auf ihr Examen in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen, ebenso wie Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte.

Es wird dringend empfohlen, mit der Vorbereitung auf die Klausur in englischer Sprachwissenschaft mindestens 1 Jahr vor Prüfungstermin zu beginnen.
- Inhalt:
- Die Lehrveranstaltung soll gezielt auf die Klausur in englischer Sprachwissenschaft (Unterrichtsfach) vorbereiten. Zielgruppe sind Studierende des Lehramts an Grund- und Mittelschulen, Realschulen und beruflichen Schulen - vgl. hierzu alte LPO (2002): LPO I, §48 (4) 1.c) und neue LPO (2008): LPO I, §44 (3) 1.a). Auf der Basis des verbindlich festgelegten und für ganz Bayern einheitlichen Lektürekanons sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft und systematisiert werden. Besprochen werden weiterhin die Modalität der Fragestellungen bei dieser Prüfung und die zu früheren Terminen gestellten Aufgaben. Gegen Ende des Semesters werden Übungsklausuren zur Überprüfung des erreichten Kenntnisstands durchgeführt.

- Kenntnis der in der Orientierungshilfe für StaatsexamenskandidatInnen (Englische Sprachwissenschaft) aufgeführten Literaturliste. Diese ist im Sekretariat des Lehrstuhls für Englische Sprachwissenschaft (U9/01.02) zu erhalten.

Aktive Mitarbeit sowie Vorbereitung und Präsentation einer Klausur.
Es wird dringend empfohlen, mit der Vorbereitung auf die Klausur in englischer Sprachwissenschaft mindestens 1 Jahr vor Prüfungstermin zu beginnen.
- Inhalt:
- Die Lehrveranstaltung dient der intensiven Vorbereitung auf die wissenschaftliche Klausur nach LPO I §64 (3) 1b "Aufgabe aus der Sprachwissenschaft - Linguistik synchron" für das Lehramt an Gymnasien. Auf der Basis des vorgegebenen und für ganz Bayern einheitlichen Lektürekanons sollen die sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse der Studierenden in Hinblick auf die Anforderungen der Klausur erweitert und systematisiert werden. Der Schwerpunkt der Übung wird darin bestehen, zu früheren Terminen gestellte Aufgaben eingehend zu besprechen. Von den SeminarteilnehmerInnen wird erwartet, daß sie bereit sind, einzelne Klausuren detailliert vorzubereiten.
