Inhalt:

“'Liquid life' is the kind of life commonly lived in our contemporary, liquid-modern society. Liquid life cannot stay on course, as liquid-modern society cannot keep its shape for long. Liquid life is a precarious life, lived under conditions of constant uncertainty” (Zygmunt Bauman).
Using Bauman’s theory as a start point, this seminar will approach and analyse Gender in various literary works from a multi-angled perspective.
Acknowledging its malleable and fluid characteristics, Gender will be discussed in relation to Power, Language, Sex and Body, Identity, Love, and how these mutually influence one another.
Furthermore, from a variety of texts, ranging from feminist science fiction, modernism and the Beat Generation, the course aims to “deconstruct”(Judith Butler) previously rigid concepts of gender and reshape such ideas as we advance, for instance, through the novels of Woolf, le Guin and Piercy.
Finally, the seminar will approach both masculinity and femininity from an “androgynous” viewpoint, that is, one that allows transition in between the binary opposites rather than the traditional stationary perspective on them.

Inhalt:

At the wake of recent waves of right wing nationalism and xenophobia which has not only plagued the last US presidential election, but also most of the elections in Europe and around the world. It is critical to continue listening to the voices of those who come from other places, foreign traditions, different religions, unfamiliar social and political structures, diverse ideologies and ways of living, and landscape dissimilar from the host society or country. Therefore, migration literature and/or immigrant writing is one of the valid source to study to understand the differences and similarities between migrants and locals. Although, the genre of migration literature or literature about/on migration is quite a new phenomenon in the academia, however, it has slowly getting into the center of contemporary academic discourse.
The seminar will address aspects of migration as rendered in literature. In particular, it will investigate the link between migration and literature, immigrant experiences, immigrant narrative, leaving and arriving, nostalgia, and transitory nature of migrant identities as articulated in literary texts. Discussion will focus on trans-cultural identities, reception and criticism of migrant identity, the complex experience of immigrant characters of being living in between two or more languages, societies and cultures.

Inhalt:

Before Suzanne Collins' Katniss Everdeen, Veronica Roth's Beatrice Prior and even Wonder Woman in the twentieth and early twenty-first Centuries, a select group of literary women paved the way to our contemporary heroines and without power or superhuman abilities were able to bend or transcend their, then, rigid and limited gender roles.
The main focus of this course lies in the representation of gender in Victorian and Puritan Literature, thus, we will analyse the gradual changes that have happened in the portrayal of “womanhood” in literature, the various degrees of masculinity and femininity in the behaviour of female characters (psychological androgyny) such as: Austen’s Lizzy Bennet, Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Hardy’s Bathsheba Everdene, Hawthorne’s Hester Prynne and Defoe’s Moll Flanders; also how their fashion influences (positive or negatively) their image, their journey to become heroines and the impact of their image in the education of young and adult female audiences.
In addition to the above mentioned prose, the poetry of William Blake and his portrayal of women will also be of interest to this course.

Inhalt:

In Brick Lane Monica Ali presents identity crisis and uncertainty of belongingness among Bangladeshi immigrants. Some immigrants call the country they originally come from home, despite having British citizenship. This particular group of immigrants endeavors to keep their cultural identity, while another sees England as their new homeland and accepts new cultural trends.
In this seminar we will investigate these conflicts among the first and second generation of immigrants from multicultural perspectives and discuss related topics such as immigration, integration, assimilation and cultural identity.

For more than two decades, the expanding field of ecocriticism – the study of environmental concerns in literary and cultural texts – has emphasized literature’s crucial role in the ecological discourse and developed a range of critical tools for analyzing literature’s power to shape ecological thought. In this seminar, we will investigate the role of female hero figures that raise important questions about ecological agency and its representation in American literature and culture.

During the last two or three decades, American literature has seen the emergence of what can be described as a new and distinct kind of “eco-heroism.” It is a form of heroism that is not only grounded in the history of American culture’s conflicted relationship with the nonhuman environment, taking up and rewriting earlier notions of environmental activism, stewardship, and care. This new kind of heroism also engages the complex and contradictory concept of the traditional American hero; we will explore how new eco-heroes critique and in certain ways transcend the ways in which notions of age, the body, gender, race, ability, and mobility have defined more classical US-American hero figures.

We will analyze the connections between literature, culture, and the environment in light of 1) the history of American ecological thought and activism (including works by Mary Rowlandson, James Fenimore Cooper and Mary Austin), 2) different strands of ecocriticism (eco-feminism and postcolonial ecocriticism) and 3) literary representations of eco-heroines in works by Octavia E. Butler, Linda Hogan, Barbara Kingsolver, Leslie Marmon Silko and Gloria Anzaldúa.

Inhalt:

This seminar is an internet-based survey course that offers students in the “Aufbaumodul Literaturwissenschaft” an overview of the main developments in US-American literary history. The class will help students to understand the links between literary periods, their central ideas, and important stylistic features. The course provides participants with detailed information about the complexities that underlie and connect each literary work and period. The course’s other main goal is to familiarize students with key texts and key discourses of US-American literature, such as race, class, and gender. The texts were chosen because they either represent crucial aspects of their respective literary periods, or because they address topics and concepts that were controversial at this particular point in history.

Despite being an E-Learning course, this is a discussion-based class, so active participation is crucial. Participants are required to contribute to class discussions by posting at least two quality responses per forum. Your learning process will be enabled through your active involvement in the different assignments, which are designed to allow you as much creative freedom as possible while assisting you in your reading and understanding of the poems, short stories, novels, and plays.

Please note that the first part of the course will be taught as a block seminar on may 3/4. Two sessions of the second part will be taught online. Consequently, NO sessions will take place on the following Thursdays: May 2nd, June 6, June 13, June 27 and July 4.

Inhalt:

Motherhood and Fatherhood have always been central themes in African American literature and culture. Under the inhumane institution of slavery, enslaved parents and their children were routinely separated for reasons of profit and social control. At the same time, black women were frequently expected to take care of their mistresses children and forced to bear their masters . Until today, the trauma of slavery and of other forms of racial violence committed against black children and their caretakers continue to feature prominently in work of art by African Americans. Engaging with these traumatic histories and experiences, but also with histories of resistance and dreams of a better future, Black writers and artists have explored family lineages and relations, countering racist stereotypes surrounding black parenthood and imagining an America in which Black families of whatever constellation are safe from racial violence and discrimination.

In this course, we will use concepts of critical race studies to examine literary texts and cultural artifacts from the 18th to the 21st century in order to discuss representations of Black families in African American culture. We will read poetry and narratives dealing with slavery and its aftermath as well as short stories and plays addressing African American experiences of motherhood and fatherhood between the turn of the century and WWII. During the second half of the course, we will analyze works by artists from the Civil Rights era to the present, looking not only at depictions of Black mothers, fathers, and families in literary texts but also in popular music, painting, and on screen.

Inhalt:

Post-war British literature was very much informed by a new generation of authors, who were also referred to as Angry Young Men, expressing their enormous discontent and frustration with society as a whole in their literary works. These novels, plays, and short stories often address issues such as class affiliation conditioning a person s success, class contrasts, and lack of class consciousness. In this seminar, we will thus be taking a closer class-related analytical look at the following canonical pieces of English literature: John Osborne s play Look Back in Anger (1956), Alan Sillitoe s novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1958), John Wain s novel Hurry on Down (1953), and Arnold Wesker s play Roots (1958). In addition, we will be dealing with Sillitoe s short story The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (1959). If you would like to take part in this seminar, please read these pieces of literature beforehand.

Inhalt:

London, probably more than any other city, is the subject and setting of an immense wealth of fictional and historical narratives, urban legends and myths, which to a considerable extent shape our perception and understanding of the metropolis. By examining representations of London in a varied selection of text forms from the Victorian era until today, we want to trace key motifs and narratives, identify how they relate to each other, and discuss their significance for popular visions of the British capital. Rather than following a strictly chronological approach, this course will focus on reoccurring themes, as well as depictions of places in the city: We will explore how e.g. poverty, the night in London, or the Underground have been por-trayed; we will discuss the shift from and the schism between depictions of London as 'imperial capital' to 'postcolonial metropolis', and examine which notions of London are revealed by personifications of the city from the last centuries.
