Inhalt:

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, New York police raided the Stonewall Inn. The patrons, led by drag queens and trans people, fought back against years of police harassment, igniting several days and nights of pivotal demonstrations. 2019 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and a half-century of LGBTQ+ liberation.

Derived from this spirit, this course offers an in-depth look at LGBTQ+ literature, culture and history. With the aid of different media (text, film and television) we will analyse key literary works such as The Picture of Dorian Gray and its homoerotic undertones as well as have a closer look at Oscar Wilde’s trials and homosexual depiction in Victorian times; one of, if not the, first gay love story by E. M. Forster ("Maurice"); with Angels in America we will analyse gay representation in theatre and also the HIV/Aids crisis in the 1980s.

Finally, we move to the screen as we watch and learn about political activism with Harvey Milk, Drag culture in the 80s with Paris is Burning and move on to the worldwide phenomenon RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Inhalt:

Bollywood is one of the biggest movie industries in the world that produces approximately 1600 movies in a year. In terms of viewership and cultural impact, Bollywood competes with Hollywood as the most influential cinema on the globe. Furthermore, the substantial Indian diasporas around the world encourage Bollywood producers to make cinemas based on current world phenomena; and since the 9/11, a lot of Bollywood movies were made that talk about terrorism and terrorists.

This Übung is intended to explore the theme of “terrorism” in post 9/11 Bollywood movies and literary representation of Muslim characters in it. To do so, this class will focus on films that explicitly refer to 9/11 and the 2008’s Mumbai terrorist attack.

Die Übung/das Kolloquium wendet sich vornehmlich an Studierende der Britischen Kultur in höheren Semestern. Es versteht sich als offenes wissenschaftliches Forum, in dem B.A.- und M.A.-Arbeiten, Magisterarbeiten, Dissertationen oder andere kulturwissenschaftlich relevante Projekte auch unter Beteiligung von Gästen zur Diskussion stehen. Zugleich bietet dieses Forum auch die Möglichkeit, eher formal orientierte Fragestellungen der Praxis zu diskutieren (z. B. Präsentationsformen bei Vorträgen/Referaten, Redaktion von Texten).

Zudem werden berufsorientierte Veranstaltungen durchgeführt, die den Studierenden Einblick in verschiedene Berufsmöglichkeiten geben sollen.

Inhalte für Vertiefungsmodul: ein Spezialgebiet. In diesem Modul werden die Kenntnisse einer weiteren Epoche bzw. einer weiteren kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellung vermittelt, die mit eigener regelmäßiger Lektüre begleitet wird. Zudem werden berufsrelevante Schlüsselqualifikationen (z.B. Präsentations- und Kommunikationstechniken) ausdifferenziert und vertieft. Mündliche und schriftliche Präsentation eigener Ergebnisse wird eingeübt.

The colloquium is intended primarily for advanced students of British culture. It is to be understood as an open academic forum in which B.A. and M.A. essays, Magister and other dissertations, or other projects in the realm of cultural studies, can be discussed in the presence of participating guests. At the same time, this forum offers the opportunity to discuss more formal questions of academic practice (e.g. presentational methods for lectures and presentations, composition of texts).

In addition, sessions will be organized with a more vocational orientation, intended to give the students insight into various professional possibilities.

Contents "Vertiefungsmodul": An area of expert knowledge. This module allows students to acquire knowledge of an additional period and of an additional cultural studies problem, all accompanied by appropriate regular reading. Furthermore, certain key professional skills (e.g. presentational and communicational techniques) will be refined and deepened. There will be practice in the spoken and written presentation of the students’ research results.

Qualifikationsziele "Vertiefungsmodul": Die Studierenden vertiefen ihre Kenntnisse der englischsprachigen Kulturen sowie der Kulturtheorien. Sie erarbeiten ein Spezialgebiet, rezipieren kritisch aktuelle Forschungsrichtungen unter Beachtung einer angemessenen Fachterminologie und können diese auf komplexe Fragestellungen des Faches anwenden.

Academic outcomes "Vertiefungsmodul": Students deepen their acquaintance with the culture of English speaking countries and also of cultural theory. Each student acquires an area of expert knowledge, takes on board – in a critical spirit – contemporary tendencies in research, while learning to maintain an appropriate academic register and to apply it to complex discipline-specific problems.

Inhalt/Course Description

24th May 2019 marked the 200th birthday of Queen Victoria. In 1837 she succeeded her uncle, William IV, to the throne, and in May 1876, she adopted the additional title of Empress of India. By the end of her sixty-three year rule the United Kingdom had changed dramatically: horse-drawn carriages had superseded by motor-cars, and sailing ships by steamers, while the Queen herself had been one of the first to use Mr Bell's telephone, and to listen to Mr Marconi's wireless. But throughout all this change, Queen Victoria was the fixed star for her nation. This period is also remembered as the Victorian age, which ended decisively with the death of this one woman in January 1901.

This Übung will introduce the students to some film versions about Queen Victoria and Victorian literature and culture: from huge box office successes to lesser-known adaptations.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of and critically assess the range of ways in which Queen Victoria and her age have been appropriated in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and they will also be able to demonstrate the ability to reflect constructively on the development of their own learning and research practice.

There will be a detailed programme and extra material on the Virtual Campus.

„Die Leute lesen immer weniger, sagen die einen. Nein, sagen die anderen, die Leute lesen den ganzen Tag. Sie lesen nur eben oft nicht Druckerzeugnisse, sondern Websites, Whatsapps, Facebook-Einträge, Tweets und Instagram-Kommentare. Das ist kein richtiges Lesen, versetzen Dritte, denn es ist kurzatmig und vergleichsweise unkonzentriert.“ Wie dieses Zitat aus Jürgen Kaubes Artikel „Zukunft der Buchkultur – Die Krise des Lesens“ (FAZ-Net, 13.10.2018) verdeutlicht, hat sich das Lesen und das Medium Buch im digitalen Zeitalter stark verändert, aber auch der Leseort ist offensichtlich einem Wandel unterworfen, wie bereits die Umbenennung der Bibliothek in „Kommunikations-, Informations- und Medienzentrum“ suggeriert. Die Vortragsreihe möchte diesem Wandel Rechnung tragen und das Thema „Buchkultur im digitalen Zeitalter“ von verschiedenen Perspektiven aus beleuchten.

Inhalt:

This course is designed for students who are preparing or working on a final thesis in American literature or culture, be it a "Magisterarbeit," "Zulassungsarbeit," "BA-Arbeit" or Master’s thesis. It offers continuous support during the process of preparing or writing the thesis, and provides an opportunity to share parts of it with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions; the syllabus and readings will be available on the Virtual Campus.

In the plenary sessions, we will discuss general criteria and formal aspects of a thesis – such as possible topics and research questions, theoretical approaches, and structural issues. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you will discuss the argument and structure of your thesis with me. For students who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies in the BA, MA and new teacher training programs, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung."

Inhalt:

This course aims to assist students in the Basismodul in writing their first term paper in literary or cultural studies in Bamberg. We will discuss general formal aspects and content related criteria of an academic paper, such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Primarily, however, we will practice how to choose a topic, how to develop a coherent structure, how to involve theoretical frameworks, and how to adhere to the MLA citation rules. Finally, we will discuss the different types of source material that are suitable for the list of references of your paper. Students have the chance to present a provisional outline in a closed discussion forum, where they will receive feedback from fellow students and the instructor.

This course is also addressed at students in the Vertiefungsmodul who are preparing or working at a BA-thesis in American Literature or Culture. Therefore, this course provides the guidance sessions for the BA thesis (Betreuungsübung) for students in the BA programs who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies. It assists students in the preparation of their final paper, and gives them an opportunity to discuss their work with other students. BA-candidates will present parts of their final paper, offering it for discussion and feedback. If you are planning to attend this class, make sure that the instructor will also be your thesis advisor. Please contact Ms. Konopka well in advance to discuss your topic and the requirements for the supervision.

Please note that this is a practical training course and not a lecture! You are expected to participate in the tasks and discussions.

Inhalt:

Das Seminar führt in zentrale methodische Fragestellungen, Grundbegriffe, theoretische Modelle und historische Zusammenhänge des Faches Britische und Amerikanische Kulturwissenschaft ein. Der Kurs findet sowohl in englischer als auch deutscher Sprache statt, um die Studierenden mit beiden Wissenschaftssprachen vertraut zu machen.

The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for the academic pursuit of British and American cultural studies. The course is conducted in both English and German, in order to familiarize the students with the specialized academic use of both languages.

Lernergebnisse, Kompetenzen/Learning outcomes, Skills

Grundthemen und Fragestellungen der Kulturwissenschaften konsequent mit literarischen Texten und Lektüren zu verbinden, ihre inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, systematisch zu rekonstruieren sowie diese kritisch in Wort und Schrift zu analysieren. Es wird ein erster Überblick in kulturwissenschaftliche Analysemodelle und Fachterminologie gewonnen. Ferner werden grundlegende Kompetenzen sowohl formaler als auch zielsprachlicher Art vermittelt. Die kommunikativen und sozialen Kompetenzen der Studierenden werden durch interaktive und projektbezogene Gruppenarbeit gefordert und gefördert.

To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed. Students' ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

Inhalt:

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, New York police raided the Stonewall Inn. The patrons, led by drag queens and trans people, fought back against years of police harassment, igniting several days and nights of pivotal demonstrations. 2019 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and a half-century of LGBTQ+ liberation.

Derived from this spirit, this course offers an in-depth look at LGBTQ+ literature, culture and history. With the aid of different media (text, film and television) we will analyse key literary works such as The Picture of Dorian Gray and its homoerotic undertones as well as have a closer look at Oscar Wilde’s trials and homosexual depiction in Victorian times; one of, if not the, first gay love story by E. M. Forster ("Maurice"); with Angels in America we will analyse gay representation in theatre and also the HIV/Aids crisis in the 1980s.

Finally, we move to the screen as we watch and learn about political activism with Harvey Milk, Drag culture in the 80s with Paris is Burning and move on to the worldwide phenomenon RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Whichever way we conceive “identity,” individual or collective, it always has many precedents ranging from cultural backgrounds to the types of television shows one grows up with. The core idea of “identity” evolves around the timeless question: “who am I?” and the other relevant questions: "who and what do I appear: to myself and others." As a result, a person can be many things at once, even when these different “identities” appear inconsistent or even contradictory. Someone could be, for example, a political conservative, religiously atheist or conversely liberal. All these descriptions act as categories that describe us in a different context. Such markers or identifiers are vital to our life experiences, both within our known circles or surroundings and outside of them. In short, these markers or identifiers help us navigate or negotiate our way through the social landscape.
Through the lenses of literary and cultural studies, this seminar aims to analyze texts related to identity and identity formation. In-class discussion will be based on:
1. How do society and culture shape and challenge individual or collective identities?
2. How do we form our own personal identification markers/identity?
3. How do communities and individuals form identities?
4. How do power and hegemony operate within and through culture?
5. What causes individual and collective identities to change over time?
6. How do individuals and groups express their identities?
7. How are people and groups with particular identities viewed and treated by others?

The course will be built on engagement with academic readings of various definitions and theories of identity and identity formations from different academic disciplines. The objective of this course is to offer an understanding of various literary texts dealing with individual and collective identities. Students are expected to learn how to apply their understanding of literary and cultural theories to an interpretation of literary texts.

Through an in-depth study of literary texts and films, this seminar investigates the ways in which ‘multicultural’ and ‘transcultural’ identities have been negotiated within ethnic minorities in the UK and Germany.

Building upon postcolonial theories of hybridity (Stuart Hall, Homi K. Bhabha), we will questions conventional conceptions of life ‘between’ cultures, thinking instead of lives lived across them. The comparative focus will centre on cultural products from particular groups: the black and Pakistani-British, and Turkish-German communities. After some theoretical groundwork, we begin with Hanif Kureishi’s astute observations of the unique dilemmas faced by second-generation immigrants in his screenplay for the film My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) and his novel The Black Album (1995). Andrea Levy’s celebrated Small Island (2004) takes a more recent look at the arrival of Jamaican immigrants, the so-called ‘Windrush Generation’, after 1948. We will compare these representations with portrayals of the Turkish-German experience, most notably Emine Sevgi Özdamar’s novel Seltsame Sterne starren zur Erde (2003), and Fatih Akin’s film Auf der anderen Seite (2004).

We shall discuss the English-language works in English, and the German-language works in German.

Inhalt:

When rioting broke out in London, Birmingham, Manchester, and other English cities in August 2011, several commentators pointed to a tradition of riots, rebellions and revolts which was frequently overlooked in official historical accounts but had influenced British culture. Following a chronological trajectory, this Proseminar sets out to understand radical oppositional movements as well as eruptions of gratuitous violence from the early modern period to the present in their respective religious, political, and cultural contexts. In order to estimate the cultural impact of these turbulences, we will not only look at the historical data, but also study literary and artistic expressions dealing with civil disobedience. Riots and rebellions studied include: The Prayer Book Rebellion (1549), The English Civil War (1642 1651), the outcry against the Jewish Naturalization Bill of 1753, the Gordon Riots (1780), the Peterloo Massacre (1819), the Suffragettes Rebellions (e.g. 1903), The Brixton Riot (1981), the 2011 England Riots, and the 2019 Extinction Rebellion protests.

De Bernières has one of his protagonists say "For birds with wings nothing changes; they fly where they will and they know nothing about borders and their quarrels are very small."

Nothing seems as fluid as borders. In the period of nationhood, wars were fought to define and protect national or ideological borders. Ethnic cleansings and relocations of entire ethnicities or religious groups became official policy to create homogenous nations. In the late twentieth century and in our time, walls were removed and built to protect and define national identities. The attacks of 9/11 and the asymmetrical wars and refugee movements that followed introduced new concepts of borders. Border dynamics include concepts of debordering and rebordering. Traditional topographies disappear and are re-created as symbolic and functional spaces that are defined by mobile borders and networks. This also redefines the relation between literature and the nation-state and between the stability of printed books and the sovereignty of national borders, a connection studied since Benedict Anderson published Imagined Communities (1983).

Writers we will discuss in these contexts include Salman Rushdie, Louis de Bernières, Kapka Kassabova, Mirsolav Penkov, Johnathan Safran Foer, Michael Ondaatje, Seamus Deane, Howard Brenton, Caryl Phillips, Bernardine Evaristo, Hugo Hamilton, and others.
On 17 December, an extra appointment will be held in U2/00.26 (8 p.m.). On this day, Eva Thüne will give a lecture on Kindertransporte, the sending of Jewish children into Britain during WWII to save them from the Nazi regime - a very pertinent topic for (crossing) borders. This lecture is part of the class programme and should be attended by all students fluent in German.

Im gesamten 19. Jahrhundert und bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts lebten besonders viele Briten im Rheinland. Sie waren nicht nur Touristen, sondern hatten teilweise ihren Lebensmittelpunkt dort. So konnte man bereits zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts von London aus die Rheingegend mit einem Dampfschiff erreichen. Ferner war durch den günstigen Wechselkurs das Leben der Briten in Deutschland sehr erschwinglich. Außerdem spielten die Rheinromantik sowie das Klima eine Rolle. Eines der Resultate ist die Überlieferung zahlreicher spöttischer Aussagen von Briten und Deutschen über die jeweils andere Gruppe sowie zahlreiche materielle Dokumente, etwa ein irisches Kreuz, zahlreiche Grabstelen sowie Grabplatten und Kenotaphe auf dem Alten Friedhof, wo mehr als 80 Grabstätten von britischen Staatsangehörigen zu finden sind.

Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts prägten die Amerikaner das Bonner Stadtbild. So wurde 1951 die amerikanische Siedlung für amerikanische Mitarbeiter der Hohen Kommission (HiCoG) errichtet. Unter der Leitung von Sep Ruf entstanden 454 Wohnungen und fünf repräsentative Einzelhäuser. Wahrzeichen ist die Stimson Memorial Chapel. Die Bauten sind eingebettet in eine von den Gartenarchitekten Mattern und Raderschall geplante Grünanlage. Im Jahr 2000 und erneut im November 2015 wurde die Siedlung unter Denkmalschutz gestellt. Sie ist architektonisch, historisch und politisch von großer Bedeutung für die deutsche Nachkriegsgeschichte.

Während einer mehrtägigen Exkursion (mit Recherche vor Ort) werden wir die britische und amerikanische Kultur im Rheinland erkunden, wobei auch der Besuch der Ausstellung "Very British" eingeplant ist, welche im Haus der Geschichte präsentiert wird und sich aus deutscher Perspektive historisch, wirtschaftlich und kulturell mit dem deutsch-britischen Verhältnis und der Sonderrolle Großbritanniens in Europa nach 1945 auseinandersetzt.

Inhalt:

Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor's book Vibration Cooking or the Travel Notes of a Geechee Girl was considered the first "black" mainstream cookbook. The book, performative in nature, not only provides recipes but also anecdotes and personal narratives related to specific food items and dishes. A New York Times bestseller, the book catapulted Smart-Grosvenor to host a weekly television program and NPR segment from the 80's to the early '90s. Smart-Grosvenor coined the term culinary anthropologist, yet today she and her work are almost lost in obscurity.

Smart-Grosvenor was always already making the critical connections between African American foodways and how it works to define the concept of American food and foodways. This seminar interrogates food and the construction and concept of "American." Specifically, the seminar considers food as material culture to demonstrate how food preferences and traditions that are considered "American" tell us about continental histories and cultures. Yet recognizing that the concept of "Americanness" is contested, and engaging in history is to unravel and examine multiple discourses of power, through the lens of performance. Smart-Grosvenor destabilizes how we think about food, how we think of America, and how we think of identity.

The seminar will explore the panoply of food objects and performance by engaging in for example, food books (e.g., cookbooks, food memoirs) not only as instructional manuals for the culinary arts and repositories for traditional dishes, but also as reflections on food habits of a population, as historical markers of major events, and as records of technological advances in a society. They also provide narratives of self-development, interpersonal engagements, and intercultural negotiations as they recount relational life stories. Succinctly, using food as a point of interrogation, this course will invite students to work with the key analytical categories of race, gender, sexuality, and nation in the context of American Studies.

Inhalt:

In this course, we will read Herman Melville's classic American novel Moby-Dick; or, The Whale (1851) from a variety of perspectives such as transnational American studies and critical race theory, post-humanist theory, ecocriticism, and animal studies, gender studies and queer theory. Based on close readings of Moby-Dick and readings of essays on current literary and cultural theory, we will move through the novel slowly, chapter by chapter, discussing its complex aesthetic achievements (or "wickedness") while looking at the ways in which the narrative puts pressure on some of the core issues of its cultural moment, including national identity, slavery, immigration, and cultural contact, the natural environment and ecology, gender and sexuality. The main objective of the course is to be able to combine theoretically informed close reading skills (textual analysis) with an understanding of the issues that shaped American culture in tension or contact with other cultures.

Please purchase a copy of Moby-Dick (a critical edition with footnotes, such as Norton Critical Edition, 2nd ed. ISBN 978-0393972832) before our first session, and start reading asap – ideally, read the entire novel during the semester break.

Inhalt:

Hardly any other city in history has allowed Jews to live as freely as New York. The seminar sets out to explain how the metropolis on the Hudson became an attraction for Jews worldwide and how multi-faceted Jewish existence in the city still is today. First following a historical trajectory, we will study how the Jewish population developed from colonial times to the present. Special attention will be paid to the German and Eastern European immigrant groups and their economic, cultural and religious differences. Individual examples, such as the textile industry, the press, shops and synagogues, will illustrate how Jews were able to leave their mark on the city. We will also learn how individual districts have played a major role in New York's Jewish history, including the Lower East Side, Washington Heights and Crown Heights. Theoretical texts, particularly from the fields of Urban and Ethnic Studies, will help us to understand the historical phenomena.
