Inhalt:

In 1976, the British public was struck by two singular verses: “I am an antichrist! / I am an anarchist!”, screamed by a cynical jeering voice of a certain Johnny Rotten, who fronted a group shamelessly called Sex Pistols. The shock provoked both indignation and admiration that soon had an international impact and kick started a new generation of young artists inspired by it under the common denominator of “punk”.

This “punk” denominator was very soon split up into various others: new wave, industrial, goth etc., and its impact seems to resonate throughout pop culture and beyond, even today. Because of its defiant attitude, destructive, yet playful creativity, and fast developing related and post-tendencies around the world, it was soon suggested that punk resembles futurism, dada, situationism or other avant-garde movements and tendencies.

With focus on English- and Italian-speaking cultural areas, this course will provide food for thought and discussions about avant-garde aesthetics, gender, and how they manifest, if they do, in punk and related tendencies in pop culture. While it is a widespread viewpoint that punk is just about the music, the course aims at the portrayal of its literary value, through its lyrics, poetry and later developed fiction with examples from Cyberpunk, Steampunk and Feminist Punk. The possible ethical and political meanings of such expression will also be presented and discussed, since political engagement is one of the central aspects of both the avant-garde and punk.

Students of Italian language and literature will also have separate sessions for analysis of Italian texts in its original language.

Inhalt:

“Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.” These words, from his poem ‘The Second Coming’, were written by W. B. Yeats in 1919 in reflection on a ravaged post-war Europe; but they also testified to a broader sense of crisis in societies that seemed to have lost many of their traditional contours. This seminar traces aspects of that crisis through a selection of English and German poetry of the early twentieth century. Specifically, we will be focusing on the very idea of ‘the human being’ as it developed in this period: its identity, its possible future, and its distinction (or not) from the material and animal world.

Literary responses to these questions were often characterized by a sense of fragmentation and alienation. That fragmentation came starkly to the fore in poetry of the Expressionist and modernist traditions; but it was also poetry which strove to find a way of ‘redeeming’ the fragments and restoring a sense of meaning – however fragile – to human existence. After a selection of short theoretical extracts by Friedrich Nietzsche and Theodor W. Adorno, we will read a selection of poems by the medical doctor and master of German Expressionism, Gottfried Benn: such cycles as ‘Morgue’ (1912) and ‘Alaska’ (1913) portray the mortality and absurdity of human existence, while hinting at the possibility of its redemption. This sense of mortality took on horrific new dimensions in the form of the trench warfare of World War I. In that light, we turn to a selection of the most celebrated English war poems, by the solider-poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen: pieces which, in their haunting and horrific imagery, both condemn the slaughter and humanize those caught up in it. Finally, we will discuss a selection from Rainer Maria Rilke’s Duineser Elegien (1926): a cycle of elegies which both mourns what has been lost or broken in modernity, and tries to find a way of restoring it.

We shall discuss the English-language works in English, and the German-language works in German.

Both Doctor Who and Star Trek have been mainstays of science fiction TV for more than five decades. Apart from having produced enormous amounts of content during this time, the respective canons of Star Trek and Doctor Who have also expanded exponentially into a variety of media, such as TV, film, books, or video games. In addition to commissioned media, both shows have found a basis of sustained interest in their respective fandoms, be it in fanfiction, fanfilm, or fanart. It is this decades-long cultural influence and the shows’ intertextuality that make them productive topics for scholarly investigation.
This course will use a variety of theoretical approaches to the study of literature and popular culture, TV shows, and fandom in general, among them Horkheimer and Adorno’s concept of the “culture industry,” Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach to cultural materials, and Henry Jenkins’ work on fan culture, to approach Doctor Who and Star Trek and interrogate their continued success in and influence on British and American science fiction in particular and popular culture in general.

Inhalt:

From a European perspective Aotearoa/New Zealand, the final major landmass to be settled by humans, is still commonly viewed as a remote, peaceful Pacific paradise known for its unspoilt nature and breath-taking landscapes that attract film-makers, tourists, and wealthy expats alike. This seminar sets out to look both at and beyond the nation’s (colonial) myths and narratives and seeks to critically explore the small country’s brief history and cultural formation. Following a roughly chronological order for the first half of the term, the course will cover major events from the arrival of the first Polynesian settlers in the 13th century, and its British colonisation in the 19th century, to the challenges of today’s pluralistic society tragically testified to by the Christchurch mosque attacks last year.
The participants’ understanding of Aoteaoroa/ New Zealand contexts will be advanced by selected readings that include excerpts from historical sources, legal documents, and literary works as well as secondary and theoretical texts on New Zealand history, culture and literature and (post)colonialism in general. The second part of the seminar will proceed thematically by looking into e. g. the role of Māori culture and language today, the nation’s relationship with nature, and how New Zealand compares to other former British dominions like Australia or Canada.

Inhalt:

This seminar aims at introducing and exploring the literary-cultural movement of the Scottish Renaissance (1920-1950), which also had significant implications within the field of national Scottish politics. From the angle of literary as well as cultural studies, we will be looking into novels such as Neil Miller Gunn's Butcher's Broom, Fionn Mac Colla's And the Cock Crew, and Lewis Grassic Gibbon's Sunset Song. In addition, we will read and discuss some (enigmatic) poems written by Hugh MacDiarmid. Topics involved include: Scotland in the 20^th century; Scotland s national identity; Scotland as an internal colony. Students wishing to take part should have read at least two of the novels before the seminar starts.
