Inhalt:
The course is an integrated language course involving grammar revision and consolidation and vocabulary
expansion at the B1 level, as well as practice in reading, writing, listening and oral skills.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

• understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.

• deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken

• produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest

• describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

A portfolio of tasks comprise the components of the evaluation for the class.

Inhalt:
This is a course designed for students from all faculties who have to write academic texts in English. We will examine the following types of texts in terms of their structures and functions:
• Compare and contrast essay
• Cause and effect essay
• Persuasive essay

The course will develop writing skills, beginning with writing good sentences before moving onto writing paragraphs and finally planning short essays. In addition, through guided exercises, we will discuss how to edit our writing to make it more accurate.

A portfolio of written tasks comprise the components of the evaluation for the class.

Inhalt:
This course is for students who want to communicate more confidently in English. We will be extending your functional English in a variety of situations (agreement/disagreement; discussions; expressing opinions, etc.) in a relaxed atmosphere where language is used naturally. The emphasis will be on spoken English and developing vocabulary, as well as improving pronunciation and listening skills, with any necessary grammar along the way.
A portfolio of tasks comprise the components of the evaluation for the class. More details will be given in the first class.

This course will present a range of grammar topics that can be difficult for non-native speakers of English.
We will discuss methods of avoiding mistakes in these topics through the use of natural examples and practical exercises.
Both the textbook and online resources will serve as sources for in-class and homework activities.

Evaluation for the course:
Six portfolio tasks = 60% of overall mark
Final exam = 40% of overall mark

Sofern nicht in einem früheren Semester bereits ein Modul ‚Englisch: Sprachpraxis‘ für Hörer aller Fakultäten (HaF) belegt wurde,
muss vor Semesterbeginn ein Einstufungstest („HaF-Placementtest“) absolviert werden.
Inhalt:
This course is for students wishing to develop and improve skills and confidence
for speaking English in a variety of settings (both public and academic).
There is a strong emphasis on pronunciation and intonation in each class.
The course will first focus on impromptu speaking (spontaneous and unrehearsed)
which is helpful in discussion groups, in class and in various other unplanned speaking situations.

Students will participate in numerous activities designed to encourage creative, on-the-spot speaking which make speaking without a plan much less frightening.
We will also focus on planned, i.e., rehearsed, speaking, and the related presentation skills needed for speaking condfidently in front of an audience.
Students will create short organized and effective presentations (narrative , informative, persuasive [in both a presentation and a debate]) .
Students will also learn how to make a report and the lauguage needed to do so.
Active participation in all activities is necessary in order to improve speaking skills.

Final Grade = presentations (impromptu, narrative, persuasive)and a report on a current event 15% each = 75%
In-class speaking activities = 25%

Inhalt:
This course is designed for students of all faculties who have to write academic texts in English.
We will examine the typical style and vocabulary of academic writing and the linguistic tools needed
for referencing research sources, producing summaries and composing different types of essays, as well
as those skills needed for effective proofreading. This course will not only look at the mechanics of
writing, but also aim to help students become better academic thinkers and planners.

This course will involve collaborative work, and through guided practice, students will learn to give
peer feedback on their colleagues’ writing, helping them in turn to become better editors of their own compositions.
This course will be assessed by the means of a portfolio of texts written during the course.

NOTE: We recommend attending English: Academic Writing B2 before attending English: Academic Writing C1!

This course is designed for students of all faculties who want to have an opportunity to learn more about current events in countries where English is used as an official language.

The course involves weekly discussions of articles and podcasts from a wide range of countries.
We will analyse both content and language in the sources and
learn how to lead and actively take part in discussions about the events. By the end of this course, you will learn to choose quality sources,
ask fruitful questions and make thoughtful contributions to discussions.

This course will be assessed by the means of a portfolio.

The course is an integrated language course involving grammar revision and consolidation and vocabulary expansion at the C1 level, as well as practice in reading, writing, listening and oral skills.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

• understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning
• express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions
• use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes
• produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices

A portfolio of tasks comprise the components of the evaluation for the class.

In order to receive a certificate indicating that the level of English attained is that of C1,
both Preparing for C1 (Teil 1) and Preparing for C1 (Teil 2) will have to be completed successfully.

NOTE: You should complete Preparing for C1 (Teil 1) before taking Preparing for C1 (Teil 2)!
