Inhalt:
Murder is the ultimate transgression. Both legally and socially, both in the nineteenth century and today. Since murder is a transgression, there is also an aspect of agency contained within the act of transgression. It is, therefore, no surprise that a woman killing caused significant discomfort to Victorian society: not only was committing murder a crime and a significant transgression of social and moral rules, but women who kill showed that women had agency and were capable of physical violence, thus contradicting Victorian concepts of women as the bearers of morality .

A trend that is then observable in the Victorian era is that women who had committed murder were twice as likely to be acquitted on the grounds of insanity, often simply with the explanation that because they killed, they must be mad. The deed was enough to convince juries of their insanity. We might connect this to said discomfort, a way to remove a woman s agency and explain away her agency. However, we must also consider another trend in nineteenth-century Britain: arguably, madness is both domesticated and becomes female in this century.

The transgression of women is, of course, also a topic observable in the fiction of the time. In this class, we will read four novels by prominent Victorian authors, Jane Eyre (1847) by Charlotte Brontë, Lady Audley s Secret (1862) by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Tess of the D Urbervilles (1891) by Thomas Hardy, and Dracula (1897) by Bram Stoker. All these novels contain transgressive women who kill, attempt to kill, and/or commit suicide. We will look at how the discourse of criminality, madness, and femininity of the nineteenth century influenced these novels (and vice versa?). We will critically discuss their actions, their mental state, their motivations, and, most importantly, how their actions are framed by the novel. We will also pay close attention to the mode these novels are written in and how this influences how these women s actions are framed.

Inhalt:
This course is designed for students who are preparing or working on a final thesis in American literature or culture, be it a "Magisterarbeit," "Zulassungsarbeit," "BA-Arbeit" or Master’s thesis. It offers continuous support during the process of preparing or writing the thesis, and provides an opportunity to share parts of it with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions; the syllabus and readings will be available on the Virtual Campus.

In the plenary sessions, we will discuss general criteria and formal aspects of a thesis – such as possible topics and research questions, theoretical approaches, and structural issues. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you will discuss the argument and structure of your thesis with the instructor/supervisor. For students who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies in the BA, MA and new teacher training programs, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung."

Inhalt:
This course aims to assist students in the Basismodul in writing their first term paper in literary or cultural studies in Bamberg. We will discuss general formal aspects and content related criteria of an academic paper, such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Primarily, however, we will practice how to choose a topic, how to develop a coherent structure, how to involve theoretical frameworks, and how to adhere to the MLA citation rules. Finally, we will discuss the different types of source material that are suitable for the list of references of your paper. Students have the chance to present a provisional outline in a closed discussion forum, where they will receive feedback from fellow students and the instructor.

This course is also addressed at students in the Vertiefungsmodul who are preparing or working at a BA-thesis in American Literature or Culture. Therefore, this course provides the guidance sessions for the BA thesis (Betreuungsübung) for students in the BA programs who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies. It assists students in the preparation of their final paper, and gives them an opportunity to discuss their work with other students. BA-candidates will present parts of their final paper, offering it for discussion and feedback. If you are planning to attend this class, make sure that the instructor will also be your thesis advisor. Please contact Ms. Konopka well in advance to discuss your topic and the requirements for the supervision.

Please note that this is a practical training course and not a lecture! You are expected to participate in the tasks and engage in discussions.

Inhalt:
While American Cultural Studies has consistently recognized the significance of religion in the US, the role of religion has often been overlooked in British Cultural Studies. In recent years, however, the discipline has increasingly acknowledged that religion has been a fundamental aspect of people’s identities in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. This lecture course offers a comprehensive survey of the major trends and events of the religious history of Britain from the Early Modern Period to the present. Rather than dwelling on Biblical and theological matters, the lecture course will demonstrate how important disputes have shaped allegiances, solidarity and hostility within the British context. Naturally, the history of Christianity takes centre stage in our sessions, but we will also explore other religious persuasions as well as processes of secularisation.
