- Inhalt:
- In this seminar, we dare to look beyond our TEFL niche and ask the question of how German and English lessons benefit from each other and what similarities and differences in language and literature teaching can be utilized. In doing so, we take an interdisciplinary look at second language acquisition, different dimensions of teaching literature (concepts of text, literacy, procedures), fundamental aspects of writing (skills, error prevention, error analysis) and last but not least exciting phenomena such as anglicisms and Denglish. The potential of translations and mediation will be our topic as well as suggestions for cooperations between German and English in everyday school life. The seminar is aimed at students of all school types who will be teaching German and/or English. Even though the language of the seminar is predominantly German, English secondary texts are used as well, therefore a good command of English is required.

The course includes a discussion of the following: theories of language learning and acquisition, approaches and methods in ELT, teaching vocabulary / grammar / the skills / literature, the principles of lesson planning, error analysis, and assessment procedures in the classroom.
Please note: The attendance of the additional Übung Academic Writing in TEFL is strongly recommended, as it aims to support students in acquiring general academic skills and in completing their portfolios. Please register via FlexNow if you would like to attend.
Important:
1. You should not register for more than one parallel course. This can lead to you being excluded. This does not apply to the waiting list.
2. Not attending the first session of the course can lead to you being excluded.

The portfolio comprises a number of different tasks which include developing a research-based activity (to be presented in the seminar), carrying out the activity in an actual English lesson at a secondary school, and reflecting upon it in a follow-up task.

- Inhalt:
- Taking the CEFR as a starting point, this seminar will focus on the skills and demands of communication in the EFL classroom. Focusing on secondary and vocational school teaching, we will discuss modern methods to enhance students speaking skills including cooperative learning, scaffoldings, and the use of digital media (e.g. TED talks, video chats, podcasts, memes) and virtual reality apps (in cooperation with Michelle Zirkel). In this seminar, we will put theory into practice by cooperating with English classes at the Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium in Bamberg (especially with my own class: grade 9). Therefore, two seminar sessions will be replaced by practical workshops at the FLG (exact dates will be given as soon as possible). Students will be required to attend regularly in order to learn how to structure, deliver and reflect on the lessons.
Course objectives:
- broaden participants knowledge on TEFL theory that needs to be taken into consideration when fostering the students speaking skills
- critically reflect on different methods and approaches that aim to foster communicative competence
- use correct classroom phrases as well as adapt teacher talk to the students levels
- develop and carry out lesson plans focusing on speaking skills (tandem teaching)

- There are learner types we need to accommodate , Due to the limits of the working memory, we should not introduce more than nine new vocabulary items per lesson , One should either teach grammar or introduce new words in one class .
There are many myths in ELT, and them being repeated by learned professionals or even printed does not make them true. In this seminar, we will look at some of most common ideas in ELT that are not evidence based. We will also analyze how good data are generated, and how this data can inform good classroom practice.

- Inhalt:
- The seminar aims to explore different approaches, concepts and methods of holistic and learner-oriented language teaching in the context of teaching English at primary schools and to beginners. To encourage young learners and beginners to explore and use the target language requires integrated and authentic learning opportunities. The course focuses on a discussion of: managing classroom processes to cultivate an immersive language teaching approach, usage of authentic media in the primary EFL classroom to foster intercultural learning; role of the teacher as that of encourager, motivator and language model; teaching of groups with mixed class levels; and the transition from primary to secondary school.

- Join us for this innovative seminar in which you will learn how to integrate virtual reality into English lessons to enhance learners’ language skills! The seminar will equip you with central competencies related to theoretical, conceptual, research-based, and empirical aspects of digital technologies for English language education focusing on secondary and vocational schools. Global citizenship education will be the overarching topic of this seminar highlighting the importance of combining language learning with currently relevant topics.
Within the seminar, you will develop lesson sequences using VR and try these out in a workshops with learner groups from schools in Bamberg.
Please note: This is a block course which will take place on seven Fridays in our Language Lab (see dates in the Angaben).
