- Inhalt
- The topic of aging is gaining increasing social and political importance due to demographic change. Gender inequality is pronounced in ageing and old age, but with large differences between European countries. The seminar will look at various aspects of aging and analyse existing gender differences. What consequences do gender-specific life courses and activities have for the material and social living conditions of men and women in old age? What paid and unpaid activities (such as gainful employment, informal care work, voluntary work) do older men and women engage in? What differences can be found between European countries and how can these be explained?
The seminar will first give an introduction into the (theoretical) background of the topic. Then we will look into various empirical studies covering topics such as the gender pension gap, the transition to retirement and working retirees, grandchild and other informal care, and voluntary work. Finally, the seminar will include an introduction to macro data sources on ageing and gender and students will have the possibility to conduct own micro-projects using this data.
