- In the first two sessions of the course, the gendered aspects of the development of the bicycle as technological artefact are discussed as part of the analytical framework developed by Bijker (1997) in the domain of socio-technological studies (STS). Additionally, one session of the course is about the gendered aspects of technological development and design, and the potential room for emancipation that technology can offer. One session is about ‘automobility’ as complex system and how issues of national, cultural and gendered identity have concurred with the spread and pervasiveness of cars as predominant transport mean. The term paper to be submitted by students can also be about gender topics related to socio-technological development, e.g. development and design of technological artefacts, role of women in engineering.
