Contents
Even though LGBT+ communities have achieved more rights and protection during the past few decades, prejudice and discrimination still prevail, resulting in disadvantages in many areas of life such as education, employment, and also health. These disparities are part of social inequality and therefore an important area of research in the social sciences. This seminar focuses on health disparities faced by the LGBT+ community. Based on theoretical concepts such as stigma and minority stress, we will discuss recent empirical studies on inequalities in mental and physical well-being and the factors that lead to them, such as disadvantages in the labor market or barriers LGBT+ individuals encounter when accessing healthcare services. We will also examine the challenges of quantitative empirical research on the LGBT+ population. This seminar is offered at the MA-level in the module MASOZ-BAU2 Inequality and Social Structure.
