Prerequisites/Voraussetzungen: BA in political science or a comparative qualification (for students with foreign degrees). Basic knowledge of research methods and experience in structuring and writing academic papers. Teaching language is English so sufficiently good English is required.

Inhalt:

The course is designed as a review on research design, especially the logic of causal inference. It will cover the entire research process in empirical-analytical political science research from finding a research question via placing it in the context of existing research, formulating a theory, deriving hypotheses, operationalizing and measuring core concepts, testing hypotheses to finally interpreting results and relating them to existing work. A special focus will be on the conditions that allow for causal inferences in different research designs, both in the tradition of causal effects and causal mechanisms. Even though the terms are often used interchangeably, research design is not the same as methods. Research design covers the plan how you address your question and how you want to answer it. Methods are specific analysis tools used in carrying out this plan. This course primarily focuses on the logic of research design. It is designed to enable students to understand and choose a research design and provides starting points for delving deeper into specific designs. Specific methods for implementing causal research designs will be discussed for selected topics.

Inhalt:

This course introduces into the terminology and basic methods of argumentation for political scientists. In the beginning of the seminar, we will deal with the appropriate form and function of arguments. By analyzing text samples, we will learn to identify valid and invalid forms of argumentation. Subsequently, the method of reconstruction will be introduced, which is applied to evaluate arguments. At the same time participants will become familiar with basic logic. In the end, students are taught to identify and avoid typical fallacies in argumentation. The aim of this course is to develop a critical stance towards scientific terminology and to acquire the competence of writing proper scientific texts. This course is taught in English.
