Inhalt:

In this seminar, we will deal with the topic of selective migration and its consequences for integration processes. First of all, we will discuss what is meant by selective migration and to what extent migrants differ from people who remain in their country of origin. We will focus on the phenomenon of educational selectivity and its consequences for different dimensions of integration (e.g. educational success, language acquisition, labor market integration). Furthermore, we will deal with different measures of selectivity and other forms of selectivity (health, motivation) and empirical findings on these phenomena.

Social inequality in educational acquisition, labor market placement, and career trajectories forms a central core of social stratification in modern societies. The seminar addresses the issues of the inheritance of social inequality in the education system and in the labor market according to parental status, as well as persistence of ethnic differences in social structural domains. In addition, we examine the role of social resources in social and ethnic inequalities as well as gender inequality and intersectionality between gender and ethnicity. Finally, we will address the role of the respective national institutional framework at the interface of education and occupational allocation and its consequences for employment opportunities and social stratification as a whole.
