Abstract:
From Altar to Atmosphere: Eco-theological contributions to SDG 13 in Africa
The invitation to creation care and SDG 13 on climate action can be thought of as “calls”. The altar serves one among other purposes, to commission people to their various callings. Christian confession holds that the Triune God is a God of life who gives life, a God of history, who acts within cosmic and human history. Goal 13 of the SDG’s indicates that climate change is an existential crisis. Although the phenomenon of climate change is global, its impacts are varied. The arid and semi-arid areas of Africa are most vulnerable owing to the fact that over 70% of the many people derive their livelihoods from agriculture. Scholars of theology in Africa have, alongside scholars from other disciplines, the responsibility of reflecting on how the continent can survive the chal¬lenges of climate change. This lecture explores Eco-theology, and its various strands. It assesses the sources for eco-theology. Further, it reflects upon how eco-theology can be a resource for climate action.
