Revisting an ‘Olive Agenda’? How the interaction of sustainability and diversity issues is being misused in populist discourses in South Africa

Veranstalter: Evangelische Theologie

Donnerstag, 3.11.2022: 18:00 - 20:00 Uhr; U2/00.25

Prof. Dr. Dr. Dion Forster, Stellenbosch University

Climate change is having a devastating impact upon the world’s poorest citizens. This is also the case in South Africa where we have experienced devastating droughts in the Western Cape, destructive floods in Kwa-Zulu Natal, rampant wildfires in numerous parts of the country, and the impact that changing weather patterns are having on food security and the migration of persons and animals. This paper discusses the complex interplay between development discourses that are shaped by short- and medium-term political ideologies (so-called ‘brown’ issues) and longer-term concerns for environmental justice (so-called ‘green’ issues) in South Africa.
