Migration and education: Amplifying refugee students’ voices in research and practice

The voices of young refugees are often silenced in educational research and practice. It is mostly done with good intentions: teachers and researchers do not want to re-surface trauma by asking about students’ experiences of forced migration. On the other hand, they might wish to highlight students’ similarities, rather than differences, to be inclusive. This might lead to the invisibilisation of refugee students’ unique experiences and be in contradiction with what the students themselves hope. I argue that it is possible to find ethical and sensitive ways to talk about refugee students’ experiences in classrooms and research. In this talk, I draw on my arts-based research projects with refugee students in Finland and Australia to share some of the stories the participants wanted future teachers and other adults to hear. The talk is followed by a discussion on how to capture the hard-to-hear voices when working with somehow marginalised groups.
