Das Seminar führt in zentrale methodische Fragestellungen, Grundbegriffe, theoretische Modelle und historische Zusammenhänge des Faches Britische und Amerikanische Kulturwissenschaft ein. Der Kurs findet sowohl in englischer als auch deutscher Sprache statt, um die Studierenden mit beiden Wissenschaftssprachen vertraut zu machen.

The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for the academic pursuit of British and American cultural studies. The course is conducted in both English and German, in order to familiarize the students with the specialized academic use of both languages.

Lernergebnisse, Kompetenzen/Learning outcomes, Skills

Grundthemen und Fragestellungen der Kulturwissenschaften konsequent mit literarischen Texten und Lektüren zu verbinden, ihre inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, systematisch zu rekonstruieren sowie diese kritisch in Wort und Schrift zu analysieren. Es wird ein erster Überblick in kulturwissenschaftliche Analysemodelle und Fachterminologie gewonnen. Ferner werden grundlegende Kompetenzen sowohl formaler als auch zielsprachlicher Art vermittelt. Die kommunikativen und sozialen Kompetenzen der Studierenden werden durch interaktive und projektbezogene Gruppenarbeit gefordert und gefördert.

To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed. Students' ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

‘These fragments I have shored against my ruins.’ T. S. Eliot’s masterpiece The Waste Land (1922) reaches its strange end with a salvo of quotations drawn from across European literary and folk traditions, before trailing off in a blaze of Sanskrit. Eliot’s admission here is symbolic not just of the poem itself, but a whole literary and cultural epoch: the modern world seems completely broken, caught as it is between a yearning for order and peace (in every sense), and the chaotic flux of human desire in all its forms. The spiritual congruities and continuities of old were vanishing, and modernist writers and poets were preoccupied with recovering a lost sense of wholeness. Whether through the holistic traditions of the past, or the utopian (or reactionary) visions of the present, European modernism was both keyed to the idea of redeeming modern life from itself, and painfully aware of its impossibility. Could the broken ever be made whole again?

This will be our primary question as we read a selection of works by three of the greatest European poets and writers of the early twentieth century: the Anglo-Irish W. B. Yeats (1865-1939), the Bohemian-Austrian Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926), and Eliot (1888-1965), a naturalized British citizen of American origin. All three developed deeply ambivalent attitudes towards modernity. Beginning with an overview of modernist poetics, we shall first turn our attention to a selection of Yeats’s later work. Critic Daniel Albright has described him as ‘the ghost that haunted Modernism’: while immersed in Irish spiritualist and folkloric traditions, and identifying with British Romanticism, he came to absorb and adopt the modernist forms he had tried so hard to reject. We will then read either a selection of Rilke's Neue Gedichte (1907-8), or his pathbreaking experimental city novel, Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge (1910). We'll then bring Rilke's sense of fragmentation into dialogue with the redemptive possibilities explored in his famous Duineser Elegien (1923). Finally, we’ll turn to Eliot, a poet with whom he is often compared. If The Waste Land lays bare the spiritual desolations of modern life, his Four Quartets (1943) find fresh consolation and meaning beyond the bounds of human time itself. While Yeats remains keenly conscious of modernity’s contradictions, Rilke and Eliot propose hard-won answers to them. But all three drew upon either conservative or even reactionary cultural and political visions. How might these poets nonetheless speak to contemporary crises of meaning and purpose? And thinking about the dangers of our own day and age, what might they tell us about some of the more seductive ‘solutions’?

We shall discuss the English-language works in English, and the German-language works in German.

The seminar has a triple focus.

Firstly, art. Through an engagement with the British visual arts, students are to become acquainted with a pictorial tradition that moved from the imitation of Continental models to landscape painters and Romanticists like Constable (1776-1837) and Turner (1775-1851), from the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (founded in 1848) and Whistler (1834-1903) to more contemporary artists like Hockney (born 1937), the Young British Artists of the 1990s, and Banksy (who rose to prominence in the 2000s). Finishing off with Brexit art, particular attention will be paid to art as an expression, mediation and construction of British culture.

Secondly, teaching art. We will consider appropriate ways of presenting art and learn about British art mostly in the form of student presentations. These presentations are encouraged to itself try out innovative formats of presenting their subjects. In this context, we re also going to look at ways of incorporating an aesthetic education within the English school curriculum and in education more generally.

Thirdly, teaching as art. For this we're going to deal with paintings, novels and films depicting teachers (for example, To Sir, with Love, 1967, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, 1969, Dead Poets Society, 1989, The History Boys, 2006, and An Education, 2009). We're also going to explore parallels between the domains of art and teaching, such as the necessity of knowledge, skill, creativity and empathy in both disciplines.

As such, the course is not only particularly suitable for future teachers, but also for anyone with an interest in art, British culture, or the skilful presentation of content.

Am 1. März 2021 im KR12/02.05 (09.30-11:00 Uhr) findet eine Wiederholungsklausur für diejenigen Studierenden des Einführungskurses (von Dr. Craig) statt, die den Kurs trotz Mitschreibens der Abschlussklausur nicht bestanden haben oder aufgrund eines ärztlichen Attestes an der Abschlussklausur nicht teilnehmen konnten. Das Attest muss der/m Lehrenden innerhalb von drei Tagen (hier gelten die Bestimmungen unter: https://www.uni-bamberg.de/anglistik/studium/informationen-zur-attestpflicht/ ) im Original vorgelegt werden.
