Inhalt:

In this seminar, we will explore if and how artists producing lyrics in music (i.e. singers, rappers, MCs etc.) differ in their 'artificial' or performed musical language production from the language they use in other (potentially equally 'artificial' or performed) speech events like interviews or films. We will also try to trace British- vs. American-oriented phases in British bands and more fine-grained regional accent features and possible changes over time. In addition, the language of popular music will be integrated into greater theoretical frameworks on spoken vs. written language, register studies, and models differentiating between 'language of proximity' vs. 'language of distance' (cf. Koch & Oesterreicher 1985ff., Biber 1988, Werner 2019). Furthermore, we plan to discuss the use of popular music for classroom teaching.

All students must be willing to report in some detail (with a fellow student) on an artist or a band. We want to analyse actual speech and song samples in class, where the two presenters will guide the remaining participants regarding accent or dialect features or politically interesting facets they wish to discuss. The seminar will take place in the biggest downtown lecture hall (which normally sits 400 students and should sit the 18 seminar participants safely even in corona times); this lecture theatre is equipped with the necessary technology to play video and music clips.

Term papers can be written on the above subjects and/or based on corpora of pop lyrics, which are available in the Bamberg English Department.

Inhalt:

In the OED, slang is defined as "the special vocabulary used by any set of persons of a low or disreputable character; language of a low and vulgar type". The idea of slang as an inferior variety is reflected not just in current debates about youth culture and the speech patterns of ethnic minorities in the US and the UK. The ways in which certain groups define themselves linguistically has been a constant topic of discussion and a field of interest for many linguists. In this seminar, we will investigate some of the mechanisms behind varieties of English which inform interlocutors about the group identity of their speakers. The idea is to gain a deeper understanding of not just specific features of certain varieties but also the motivation behind the rich repertoire of slang expressions. Among the topics dealt with in the seminar are African-American Vernacular English, the emerging variety of Multicultural London English and media representations in music (particularly hip-hop and grime) and film.

Usually I'm not a big fan of opening quotes, but I'll make an exception just this once, simply because William Labov hits the nail on the head with this one:

"If linguistics can be said to be any one thing it is the study of categories: that is, the study of how language translates meaning into sound through the categorization of reality into discrete units and sets of units. This categorization is such a fundamental and obvious part of linguistic activity that the properties of categories are normally assumed rather than studied."

While Labov speaks of linguistics, categories are omnipresent in our daily lives: we categorize plants into edible and non-edible, objects by the wavelengths of reflected light (i.e. colour) or people into family, friends, or strangers. Without categories, without the act of categorization, we simply could not function and interact with the world. Yet, we rarely concern ourselves with the nature of categories. Do categories have clear-cut boundaries? Are members of a category all of equal status? Is a penguin really a bird? (I mean, like, really really?)
Do not worry, while certainly highly enlightening, I do not plan to engage you in endless philosophical discussions. What I want to show you is how deeply ingrained the so-called classical concept of categorization is in us (and in linguistics). I want to introduce you to the prototype theory as an alternative concept of categorization and show you how we can investigate the nature of categories in language empirically.

Description:

In both lexicology and grammar, morphology investigates the "smallest meaningful units" of a language. Morphologists analyze the structure of complex words (word-formation) and word forms (inflection) with regard to both form and meaning. In this seminar, we will look at possibilities and problems of the morphological analysis of English. After the discussion of the basic notions and patterns of word formation in English, theoretical points of interest will take us to a consideration of interfaces between morphology and phonology, syntax and semantics. From there we will look at the representation and processing of complex words in the mind and investigate recent approaches to morphological theory, such as the contribution of construction grammar. In our discussions, we will also consider the question of intersections between derivational and inflectional morphology. Thus, for instance, the evidence is inconclusive whether the adverb-forming suffix -ly is derivational (i.e. forms new lexemes) or inflectional (i.e. marks a different function of the same lexeme). In addition, changes in English morphology over time will be addressed. From a more practical point of view of actual language use, some of our time throughout the semester will be spent working with large present-day English corpora, and we will also discuss some Staatsexamen tasks (i.e. final examination tasks for students of teacher education) which deal with morphology and word-formation.
The Übung which accompanies the Seminar (Wednesday, 14:15-15:00) is designed for discussions of linguistic project work and other assignments with the teacher individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.

Modern lexicography owes a large debt to the corpus revolution (Rundell 2008), and almost every aspect of the practice of dictionary-making is nowadays informed by corpus analysis (Walter 2010). In this seminar, we will review types of linguistic corpora (i.e. large-scale computer-readable text databases) and techniques of corpus analysis, as well as types of dictionaries and aspects of their use and their compilation (i.e. lexicography).
The lexicographic works to be subjected to scrutiny will range from the monumental Oxford English Dictionary to learner dictionaries, and from monolingual dictionaries to bilingual ones. Dictionary portals and other lexical databases (such as thesauri and collocation databases) will be explored as well. We will compare the assets and shortcomings of different channels of distribution (print vs. electronic) and modes of compilation (expert-built and collaborative).
Participants will be expected to conduct corpus-based studies to evaluate the extent and adequacy of information available from different dictionaries. The seminar aims to equip them with the theoretical background, methodological expertise and critical awareness requisite for competent users of corpora as well as dictionaries.

Diese Lehrveranstaltung behandelt die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Lexikologie und Lexikographie, Phonologie, Morphologie und Syntax. Sie vermittelt überblicksartig Grundkenntnisse von der Geschichte der englischen Sprache und macht dabei, vor dem Hintergrund der wichtigsten soziohistorischen Ereignisse, die tiefgreifenden Änderungen vom Alt- zum Neuenglischen deutlich.

This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master s theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

Inhalt:

Morphology is generally defined as a branch of grammar that studies the internal structure of words. It is thus distinguished from syntax, which deals with the rules governing the combination of words in sentences. There are two main subfields in morphology: the study of inflections (inflectional morphology) and of word-formation (lexical or derivational morphology). Apart from looking at these two areas we will discuss basic notions such as morpheme, word, lexeme and examine the semantic structure of words. Participants in the seminar will be asked to prepare individual topics and present them in class. At the end of term, there will be a written exam.

Inhalt:

This course is concerned with central aspects of phonetics and basic phonological concepts. It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress. Core readings and texts for transcription will be made available on the Virtual Campus after each session.

This lecture is a general introduction to concepts and methodologies in sociolinguistics, with a clear focus on the English language. It covers well-established assumptions and classic findings concerning the relationship between linguistic variation and social variables (e.g. age, gender and social class); it traces how the field has developed from the early seminal studies (e.g. by William Labov and Peter Tudgill) to the present day; and it discusses the particular methodological issues and problems involved in certain 'subdisciplines' of Sociolinguistics, e.g. Sociophonetics and Historical Sociolinguistics. Above all, we will discuss selected sociolinguistic studies (mainly from varieties of British and American English) to see how theoretical and methodological considerations impact on research.

Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an einem Kurs teilnehmen, der Sie auf die schriftliche Examensprüfung in englischer Sprachwissenschaft vorbereitet. Bei der Wahl Ihres Themengebiets haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte und des Mittelenglischen aufzubauen und zu vertiefen, ist es vollkommen ausreichend, die Übung „Englische Sprachgeschichte“ besucht zu haben. Weitere Vorkenntnisse sind zunächst nicht nötig. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen.

Hier ein paar Fakten, die Ihnen bei der Entscheidung helfen können, ob dieser Kurs vielleicht etwas für Sie wäre: Die schriftliche Examensprüfung besteht, wie bei der neuenglischen Textklausur auch, aus Fragen zu einer Textpassage und einem Aufsatzthema. Anders als bei der neuenglischen Klausur können Sie aber die Texte der mittelenglischen Klausur im Vorfeld genau vorbereiten, denn die Passagen stammen immer aus einem festgelegten Textkorpus. Dieses besteht aus einer (übersichtlichen) Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers; genauer: zehn Geschichten der Canterbury Tales und die ersten beiden Bücher von Troilus and Criseyde. Chaucers Londoner Englisch des 14. Jahrhunderts ist die Grundlage des heutigen englischen Standards und bietet daher die am leichtesten verständliche mittelenglische Varietät.

In der Examensübung werden zum einen über die Übung Englische Sprachgeschichte hinausgehende theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, hauptsächlich geht es aber um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Die erste Frage zum Text ist immer eine Übersetzung ins Deutsche, weswegen zusätzlich zu der Examensübung eine vierzehntägig stattfindende Übung zur Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten wird.

Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte sind in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen. Kursunterlagen werden auf dem "Virtuellen Campus" bereitgestellt. Das Passwort wird zu Vorlesungsbeginn bekannt gegeben.

Inhalt:

This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

Inhalt:

Die Linguistische Werkstatt ist eine Vortragsreihe mit Diskussionscharakter, in der ein breites Spektrum an linguistischen Fragestellungen behandelt wird. Vorträge werden sowohl von in Bamberg tätigen also auch auswärtigen Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern gehalten; auch Promovierende können die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit vortragen und zur Diskussion stellen. Die Reihe soll vor allem ein Diskussionsforum bieten, das über die Grenzen der einzelnen Fächer hinweg unterschiedliche Ansätze und Fragestellungen innerhalb der Linguistik umfasst. Promovierende der BaGL können die regelmäßige Teilnahme an der Werkstatt als Teil ihrer Pflichtveranstaltungen anrechnen lassen.

Description:
The Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics" accompanies a linguistic seminar (for BA: Ergänzungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft; for LA Gym: Vertiefungsmodul Englische Sprachwissenschaft; for MA: Mastermodule English Linguistics). It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in using specific sources of information and technologies as well as in collecting, analysing and visualizing their own empirical data. The topics treated will include aspects of academic writing (handling secondary literature, referencing, structuring a termpaper), the analysis of linguistic corpora and other databases, the use of online dictionaries, the construction of questionnaires, the analysis of audio-recorded data, the interpretation of experiments, etc.

Inhalt:

Pragmatics is commonly defined as the study of “language in use”: it brings into focus aspects that other fields of linguistics tend to abstract from, such as the speaker’s and addressee’s intentions, underlying beliefs, and social context, and thus tries to provide the bigger picture of what we mean by what we say (and don’t say!), and why we choose to phrase it in one way rather than another. Consequently, pragmatics lies at the heart of the relationship between language and power, in which language has been shown to both reflect social hierarchies as well as create them. The aim of this course is to provide students with the basic concepts of pragmatics, such as:

• The co-operative principle: How do conversations work? When do they break down?
• Speech acts: How to use a question as a threat (Have you ever had your nose broken?), and a statement as a command (Someone’s grammar skills could be improved.)
• Politeness: How do we speak to each other without causing offense? How do cultures differ in their strategies?
• Conversational styles: How do you know when it is your turn to speak? When do interruptions, overlaps and silences become awkward?
• Critical discourse analysis: How do the media, politicians, advertising, and other people around us try to sell us their side of a story? (And how can you do the same?)

We will apply these principles to current issues, such as racism and xenophobia; conspiracy theories, pseudoscience and religion; sexual identity; climate change and its denial; and the role of journalism and the mass media.

Students preparing for their Staatsexamen, in which pragmatics can be selected as a topic, are welcome to join the course as guests. Please do not register via FlexNow, but do contact your lecturer by email beforehand (michaela.hilbert@uni-bamberg.de).

In diesem Seminar werden Studierende mit den zentralen Themen und Fragestellungen der englischen Soziolinguistik im Bereich des Internets vertraut gemacht. Welche Rolle spielen "typische" soziolinguistische Klassifikationen wie Gender, Klassenzugehörigkeit, und Alter für die Nutzung der englischen Sprache im Internet? Welche alternativen Konzepte können helfen, die vorhandene sprachliche Vielfalt zu erklären? Außerdem werden unter anderem Fragen zur Bildung von Gruppen und zur Artikulation der persönlichen Identität im Internet besprochen. Studierende lernen wichtige Korpora zu internet-basierten Daten kennen und nutzen, und entwickeln die Fähigkeit selbstständig Forschungsprojekte zu (selbst erhobenen) Daten aus dem Internet durchzuführen. Dabei werden Sie besonders zu Themen wie ethischer Verantwortlichkeit und verschiedenen Datensammlungs- und Analysemethoden sensibilisiert.

In this seminar students will be familiarized with central topics and questions within the area of English sociolinguistics on the internet. What role do "typical" sociolinguistic categorisations such as gender, social class, and age play for the usage of the English language on the internet? Which other concepts can help to explain the linguistic diversity that can be found on the internet? We will furthermore address questions of commmunity-formation and identity-creation in the online environment, among others. Students will get to know, and learn to use, important corpora of internet-based data, and will develop the skills to independently conduct research projects on (self-collected) online data. While doing so, special emphasis will be put on ethical responsibilities and the variety of options for collecting and analysing online data.

Auf der Basis des bayerischen Lektürekanons zur englischen Sprachwissenschaft und weiterer Texte sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse relevanter Teilbereiche (Teil A: Phonetik und Phonologie/Syntax/Text- und Stilanalyse/Lexikologie, Morphologie und Phraseologie; Teil B: Variation und Wandel) wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft werden. Es werden zentrale Texte des Lektürekanons sowie ausgewählte Aufgaben aus früheren Klausuren besprochen.

Besprochen werden weiterhin die Modalität der Fragestellungen bei dieser Prüfung und die zu früheren Terminen gestellten Aufgaben. Gegen Ende des Semesters werden Übungsklausuren zur Überprüfung des erreichten Kenntnisstands durchgeführt.

Inhalt:

In the relatively confined space of Scotland, mainly three linguistic traditions co-exist, interact, and influence each other (or have done so in the past). The oldest of these is Scottish Gaelic, once the language of the kings of Scotland but no longer widely spoken today. It is still important as an emblem of (western) Scottish identity, however, and its influence can be traced in the variety of English spoken in the Highlands. The second linguistic tradition is Scots, which developed out of a northern branch of Old English. Today, Scots can be said to function as a non-standard dialect of English with unique characteristics at the levels of phonology, morphosyntax, and the lexicon. Finally, there is Scottish Standard English (SSE). It is often described as Standard English spoken with a Scottish accent, but there are also grammatical features characteristic of SSE.
This seminar provides the following:

• A general understanding of Scottish topography and history and the ways in which they shaped the linguistic landscape over the centuries, resulting in the present-day situation
• Discussions of the two problematic notions of language and dialect as exemplified in the changing roles of English and Scots in Scotland
• An understanding of the most important characteristics of Scottish English / Scots in pronunciation, grammar and lexicon, and the ability to identify and describe them
• Discussions of some influential empirical studies into (mainly urban) varieties of English in present-day Scotland
• Examples of Scots/SSE in popular culture, film and literature.

Description:
Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms, like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any, in fact only eight, inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related, as they obviously are --- just compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced. Special areas of interest are the development of the vocabulary, sounds and spelling, morphology and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS). Students from other BA programmes can earn 2 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2 or 4 ungraded (pass/fail ) or graded ECTS points. Everybody else who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without ECTS points.
Note that students of Lehramt Gymnasium and of B.A. Medieval Studies in their Basismodul must attend the Uebung "Englische Sprachgeschichte", not this lecture.

Insbesondere in der zweiten Semesterhälfte bereitet der Kurs durch Version und Besprechung ehemaliger Prüfungstexte intensiv auf die Übersetzungsklausur im Staatsexamen vor.

Inhalt:

Anknüpfend an den Übersetzungskurs E-D I greift diese Übung Strategien und Fehlerschwerpunkte in der Übersetzungsarbeit auf fortgeschrittenem Niveau auf und vertieft diese anhand praktischer Beispiele. Anwendung finden die eingeübten Fertigkeiten in der Übersetzung von Ganztexten verschiedener Genres, deren übersetzungsspezifische Eigenheiten ebenfalls thematisiert werden sollen. Insbesondere in der zweiten Semesterhälfte bereitet der Kurs durch Version und Besprechung ehemaliger Prüfungstexte intensiv auf die Übersetzungsklausur im Staatsexamen vor.

Es wird empfohlen, diese Übung nach dem Sprachpraktischen Oberkurs zu belegen.

Suitability for modules:
This course is suitable for all degree courses involving English Linguistics (Lehramt, BA, MA, etc.) where 2, 3, 4 or 6 ECTS are required.

Inhalt:

Do you sometimes wonder whether an expression you have heard or read is actually appropriate to use in a certain context? Do you regularly rack your brains for a good way of expressing your ideas in an essay or term paper? Do people sometimes ask you to proofread their texts but you find it hard to judge their language? Are you considering a career in teaching English but feel daunted by the prospect of corrections piling up on your desk?
This practical course aims to enable participants to use corpus tools to assess their own and other writers' text production. Corpora are digital text collections representative of one or more than one regional variety, genre and text type, which can be accessed through various interfaces, many of them freely available online. Corpus skills put users in a position to check whether a certain word, collocation or syntactic structure conforms to the norms of competent language users. Participants will build up their knowhow as corpus users, developing simple and complex corpus searches and critically monitoring query results and numerical output. We will also explore ready-made corpus-based tools designed to help with (academic) writing tasks.

Inhalt:

Dieser Workshop bereitet Sie gezielt auf das Staatsexamen Linguistik synchron (LA Gymnasium) vor und sollte direkt vor dem Examen, also im gleichen Semester, belegt werden. In der ersten Sitzung erhalten Sie praktische Tipps für die schriftliche Prüfung. Zudem haben Sie die Gelegenheit, sich intensiv auf den A-Teil vorzubereiten. Zu den klassischen Prüfungsaufgaben (Transkription, Satzanalyse, morphologische Analyse) erhalten Sie individuelles Feedback bezüglich Form und Inhalt. In der zweiten Sitzung schreiben Sie eine Probeklausur (A- und B-Teil), die Sie etwa eine Woche später im Einzelgespräch zurückbekommen.

This workshop is designed to give to those who need it an additional chance to improve their exam preparation for "English Phonetics and Phonology", offering them more transcription practice. Participation is not obligatory and does not earn you any ECTS points.

The course will consist of two practice sessions where we will discuss exercises that participants should have prepared in advance. Student transcriptions will be corrected together. There will also be time to discuss further questions and problems.

Live sessions:

The sessions will take place via Microsoft Teams (Team code: na22vn3). Parts of the sessions will also be recorded for asynchronous viewing by those who cannot be there during live sessions. To view the recordings, you have to join the Team as well.

Materials to be prepared for the first session will be available on the above-mentioned VC site from Wednesday, 27th January. Materials for the second session will be available from Wednesday, 3rd February. For part of the exercises, participants can turn in their solutions via the VC.

Inhalt:

Der Workshop richtet sich an Lehramtsstudierende, die nach diesem Semester ihr Staatsexamen in Englisch ablegen wollen. Neben Strategien zur Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Übersetzungsklausur im Staatsexamen wird der Workshop Gelegenheit zur Erweiterung des prüfungsrelevanten Wortschatzes und zur vertieften Beschäftigung mit syntaktischen Fehlerschwerpunkten bieten. Anhand von praktischen Beispielen aus vergangenen Prüfungen soll erarbeitet werden, was eine gelungene Übersetzung ausmacht. Die Teilnehmenden können individuelle Beratungen zur Prüfungsvorbereitung auf der Grundlage einer Probeklausur in Anspruch nehmen.
