This weekly meeting is designed as an extension of the Übung ‘Uncle Sam Wants You:’ War in American Literature and Culture and offers a space to watch and further discuss the movies that are part of the syllabus for that class. We will also discuss other war movies that have had a lasting impact on how war is imagined and depicted in American culture.

Inhalt:

The famous American playwright Edward Albee once observed that [o]ne must let the play happen to one; one must let the mind loose to respond as it will, to receive impressions, to sense rather than know, to gather rather than immediately understand. This seminar will try to not only let plays happen and receive impressions, but also engage students in understanding some of the most famous plays in American literary history. We will read American dramas in a chronical order: from excerpts of early colonial and revolutionary plays, via the first successful African-American plays written during Romanticism, all the way to modernist and post-modernist plays. During the course, we will discuss a broad range of typical features of American drama as well as some of its notorious forms, like the Minstrel Shows. For our central reading we will focus on 4 classic American plays, but will also engage in shorter plays and excerpts from other dramas and Broadway shows.

Please note: We will be visiting the production of Kushner's Angels in America at the E.T.A. Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg around November 10/11. We will get the unique opportunity to talk to the artistic director and cast members after the play, which will then lead our discussions of the play in class!

This class is a reading exercise (Leseübung), designed to assist you in working through the reading list. Therefore, participants are expected to read a lot.
Material will be provided well ahead of class via the Virtual Campus. It is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions.

This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a BA-thesis in American Literature or Culture. It supports students while preparing or writing their theses, and gives them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students.

We will discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. For students in the BA programs, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the Betreuungsübung . The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-program. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.

The course will take place every two weeks and starts in the first week of the semester.

Inhalt:

This course is designed specifically for students of all teaching degrees ("Lehrämter") who prepare for the 3-hour written "Staatsexamen" in American Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other final exams - oral or written - are very welcome, too.

The "Repetitorum" is a class designed to assist students in their preparations for the final written exam. The class, however, does NOT substitute each student s individual study time! During class, students will receive immediate feedback about their level of preparation for the final exam. The most important aim of this class, however, is to provide participants with a platform to discuss complex issues, rather than particular details of one certain topic. Once again: the class aims to assist students in their preparations, but it does NOT replace independent study!

The topics for this semester will be chosen by the class participants themselves during the first session.

Inhalt:

Recent political developments in the United States have led to an increased awareness of women s rights and issues of gender equality. While right-wing populists devalue them, women have begun to fight for their rights again, and are supported by men whose engagement seems to turn feminism into equalism (Taylor Swift).

Reading American and Canadian novels from the 1930s to most recent publications, in this seminar we are going to trace the development of gender roles in North-American literature of the 20th and 21st centuries in order to evaluate the current state of gender equality in the United States. We will look at the representation of femininity and masculinity, ideals of motherhood and beauty, and the interrelatedness of race, class, and gender in most recent publications, such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie s Americanah and Siri Hustvedt s The Blazing World, and compare them to classics of North-American literature from Zora Neale Hurston to Margaret Atwood. Eventually we want to assess whether the concerns that inspire these classics are really so different from ours today, and how far we have really come in terms of gender equality.

The preparatory meeting on 24 November 2017, 12:00 p.m. is compulsory.

Inhalt:

Recent political developments in the United States have led to an increased awareness of women s rights and issues of gender equality. While right-wing populists devalue them, women have begun to fight for their rights again, and are supported by men whose engagement seems to turn feminism into equalism (Taylor Swift).

Reading American and Canadian novels from the 1930s to most recent publications, in this seminar we are going to trace the development of gender roles in North-American literature of the 20th and 21st centuries in order to evaluate the current state of gender equality in the United States. We will look at the representation of femininity and masculinity, ideals of motherhood and beauty, and the interrelatedness of race, class, and gender in most recent publications, such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie s Americanah and Siri Hustvedt s The Blazing World, and compare them to classics of North-American literature from Zora Neale Hurston to Margaret Atwood. Eventually we want to assess whether the concerns that inspire these classics are really so different from ours today, and how far we have really come in terms of gender equality.

The preparatory meeting on 24 November 2017, 12:00 p.m. is compulsory.

We will discuss (and practice!) how to choose a topic, develop a coherent structure for a term paper, how to involve theoretical frameworks, and how to adhere to the MLA citation rules. You will also be asked to compile a short "Works Cited" list. Finally, we will discuss the different types of source material that can appear in the list of references of your term paper. Students have the chance to present a provisional outline in a closed discussion forum, where they will receive feedback from fellow students and the instructor.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, class and economic success, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, America as nature’s nation; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary readings will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American literature with a focus on American literature. We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of American literary history. The focus, however, will be on the discussion of textual examples from these various vantage points. The goal of this course is to enable you to articulate informed readings of texts from different genres, in their cultural contexts,informed by key theories and analytical methods.

Inhalt:

In this seminar we will study trends and schools in literary theory since the 1950s. Our reading will be chosen from the key texts by thinkers identified with formalism and structuralism, deconstruction and poststructuralism, gender studies and queer theory, psychoanalytical criticism, (Neo-)Marxism and Cultural Materialism, New Historicism, postcolonial criticism and reader-response theory. Depending on the participants research interests and input, we may also consider more recent approaches like ecocriticism and possible-worlds theory, or less "canonized" theories (e.g. systems theory).
The course is intended to assist students in both finding their own approaches towards primary texts and in identifying mind-sets and methods applied in the secondary sources they read in their other seminars: "What theory demonstrates [ ] is that there is no position free of theory, not even the one called common sense." (V. B. Leitch).
This class is based not only on the reading, but also the in depth analysis of theoretical writing. Therefore, students are expected to prepare diligently for the two block sessions by (1) reading the assigned text(s), (2) studying each text s background/context, and (3) establishing some basic understanding of the theory discussed in the respective text before coming to class! Only then will it be possible for us to engage in critical discussion during our sessions. In sum, it is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend all block sessions and contribute to class discussions. Your input is mandatory and will be welcome!

With the rise of populism in the US and Europe, and a continuing push toward social conservatism on both sides of the Atlantic, it has become painfully clear that the United States and Germany have neither entered a post-racist era nor a post-feminist one. Instead, both countries find themselves confronted with political, social and cultural dynamics that demand critical engagement with questions of race and gender from an intersectional and transatlantic perspective. The 2016 US presidential election, many have argued, has not only led to an increase in racist and misogynist violence in the United States, it has also attracted notice to the work of a broad range of social movements fighting for the rights of women, people of color, and immigrants. At least in part, the resulting public debate surrounding the ongoing pervasiveness of racism, xenophobia, and sexism resonates with discussions in Germany, where politicians of the (far-)right have been instrumentalizing discourses around women’s safety to stir up anti-immigrant sentiments, while feminists and anti-racist activists have tried to counter such rhetoric through cultural critique as well as political activism.

This seminar on issues of race and gender in German and American literature and culture seeks to explore some of the challenges of 21st-century feminism by taking a comparative and historical perspective. It highlights several moments in the history of feminism in Germany and the United States when issues of race and gender became entangled in particularly problematic or productive ways, for example during the abolitionist and feminist movement in the United States, during the era of German colonialism, in Nazi-Germany, and during the US Civil Rights movement. By tracing feminists’ varying engagements with questions of race, the course hopes to offer a space to rethink the complex interrelationships of feminist and anti-/racist discourses at play in Germany and the US today as well as in the past. tba

Inhalt:

With the rise of populism in the US and Europe, and a continuing push toward social conservatism on both sides of the Atlantic, it has become painfully clear that the United States and Germany have neither entered a post-racist era nor a post-feminist one. Instead, both countries find themselves confronted with political, social and cultural dynamics that demand critical engagement with questions of race and gender from an intersectional and transatlantic perspective. The 2016 US presidential election, many have argued, has not only led to an increase in racist and misogynist violence in the United States, it has also attracted notice to the work of a broad range of social movements fighting for the rights of women, people of color, and immigrants. At least in part, the resulting public debate surrounding the ongoing pervasiveness of racism, xenophobia, and sexism resonates with discussions in Germany, where politicians of the (far-)right have been instrumentalizing discourses around women’s safety to stir up anti-immigrant sentiments, while feminists and anti-racist activists have tried to counter such rhetoric through cultural critique as well as political activism.

This seminar on issues of race and gender in German and American literature and culture seeks to explore some of the challenges of 21st-century feminism by taking a comparative and historical perspective. It highlights several moments in the history of feminism in Germany and the United States when issues of race and gender became entangled in particularly problematic or productive ways, for example during the abolitionist and feminist movement in the United States, during the era of German colonialism, in Nazi-Germany, and during the US Civil Rights movement. By tracing feminists’ varying engagements with questions of race, the course hopes to offer a space to rethink the complex interrelationships of feminist and anti-/racist discourses at play in Germany and the US today as well as in the past.

This German-American class is designed for students of English, students of German (Germanistik) and American exchange students. Together we will discuss how German and American Romanticism helped to shape distinct national ideas and identities between the end of the 18th century and the (late) middle of the 19th century. A growing awareness of home and belonging, or the horrifying lack thereof, is at the focus of many works of art of the times.

In this seminar, we will explore representations of German and American Romanticism, using the ruin as leitmotif for our analyses and discussions. To what extend can we find traces of national identity in the architecture of buildings and urban settings, despite the Romanticists' focus on wilderness and natural environment? Is the ghost town a representative of the decay of the American Dream and thus the quintessential American ruin? In order to answer those and (many more) questions we will not restrict ourselves to the reading of literary texts, but also deal with artistic folk songs and paintings of artists like Caspar David Friedrich and representatives of the Hudson River School. The seminar will also include a day trip to the Rock Garden in Sanspareil.

Inhalt:

This lecture provides an overview of America’s literary history, focusing on the colonial era, the enlightenment, and romanticism. The thematic, formal and stylistic features of a wide range of texts—sermons, travelogues, poems, essays, short stories, and novels—will be discussed in the broader context of America’s cultural and intellectual history. In order to understand how different groups of Americans have imagined their culture at specific moments in time, we will analyze texts that address the diversity of American experiences in terms of religion, race, class, gender, region, and political conviction. We will also explore how texts from different genres have critically engaged with the past and with other cultures, charting new directions for the relationship between literature and culture. Overall, we will interrogate to which degree processes of modernization and the ideal of democratization can be understood as one of American literature’s driving forces. Inhalt:

From its founding to the present day, narratives of war have made up a large part of U.S. American literature and culture. What is more, the major wars that the United States fought have been and continue to be represented across various media and genres. In this course, we will analyze and compare representations of war in literature, film, and political publications like posters and cartoons. A special focus will be put on the image of the United Sates and its Military that is constructed in these cultural products as well as their representation of the United States’ place in the world. We will further analyze how representations of war have changed from colonial times up to the so-called “War on Terror” in the twenty-first century and how these changes affect wider ideas about warfare and U.S. American history and identity.

In addition to this course, the department is offering a weekly meeting on the topic: “‘The Americans Come:’ War in American Cinema” during which we will watch and discuss war movies that have had a lasting impact on the movie industry and American culture as a whole.

ATTENTION:
This is a READING class! Participants must be able to read and review quite a lot of material between the weekly sessions. The class is also designed to assist you with the reading list of the American Studies Section and aims to contribute to your understanding of key narratives of North American literature and culture. Most of the material will be provided via the Virtual Campus ahead of each session. Students are, however, required to read some texts before the beginning of the semester either in print or as e-book.
