Inhalt:

This practical reading course investigates the intersections of art, in particular literature, and (environmental) activism in the US and worldwide. In a time of climate change and massive biodiversity loss, “artivists” are aiming to raise social, political, and environmental awareness with their art. To disseminate their message, artivists frequently employ different forms of digital media, such as videos or Instagram. A critical investigation of #digitalactivism will frame the discussion and focus on environmental literature, advocacy, and activism.

By focusing on how poetry and narratives in different media convey environmental messages in contemporary activist art, the students will become familiar with a variety of genres and technologies that are currently being used for resistance purposes. The course work includes both an engagement with theoretical texts as well as historical and current examples of (digital) eco-artivism from the US and around the world. A selection of contemporary and older texts, which includes narratives, poems, images, and songs, allows for a holistic discussion of how these texts were used in resistance and activist movements in terms of communication, collaboration, and mobilization. Finally, students will have the possibility to come up with their own (digital) campaigns during a concluding practical section of this course.

The goal of this course is to help students to gain an understanding of historical and contemporary eco-artivist practices, be more conscious of the advantages and disadvantages of #digitalactivism, and become more critical and informed participants of civil society.

Inhalt:

This reading course on 20th-century American drama, designed to assist you in working through the reading list, will highlight and focus on several influential U.S. American dramatic works written since the 1910s in its entirety or as excerpts. Dramatic works highlight performative qualities of categories such as gender, sexuality, "race," and class. In addition, they also offer special opportunities to engage with literature more actively, for example, through scenic readings as well as viewings/hearings. Authors will include Susan Glaspell, Eugene O'Neill, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Lorraine Hansberry, Henry David Wang, Tony Kushner, among others.

Inhalt:

Sometimes we encounter works that perplex us: literal holes appear on every page; sentences never end; syntax doesn’t make sense; a film displays nothing but moving shapes and colors; words look like pictures. Sometimes a poem is organized like a film, or an author may refuse to use the letter “e.” Why do these experimental texts exist? How do we make sense of them? The course will combine theory and a collection of sample texts in our effort to understand and even produce avant-garde literature and film. Be ready to theorize the “avant-garde,” apply those frameworks to the literature, film, and performance pieces we study, and experiment with your own creations.

Inhalt:

This lecture provides an overview of America's literary history, focusing on the colonial era, the enlightenment, and romanticism.

The thematic, formal and stylistic features of a wide range of texts—sermons, travelogues, poems, essays, short stories, and novels—will be discussed in the broader context of America's cultural and intellectual history. In order to understand how different groups of Americans have imagined their culture at specific moments in time, we will analyze texts that address the diversity of American experiences in terms of religion, race, class, gender, region, and political conviction. We will also explore how texts from different genres have critically engaged with the past and with other cultures, charting new directions for the relationship between literature and culture. Overall, we will interrogate to which degree processes of modernization and the ideal of democratization can be understood as one of American literature's driving forces.

For more than two decades, the expanding field of ecocriticism – the study of environmental concerns in literary and cultural texts – has emphasized literature’s crucial role in the ecological discourse and developed a range of critical tools for analyzing literature’s power to shape ecological thought. In this seminar, we will investigate the role of female hero figures that raise important questions about ecological agency and its representation in American literature and culture.

During the last two or three decades, American literature has seen the emergence of what can be described as a new and distinct kind of “eco-heroism.” It is a form of heroism that is not only grounded in the history of American culture’s conflicted relationship with the nonhuman environment, taking up and rewriting earlier notions of environmental activism, stewardship, and care. This new kind of heroism also engages the complex and contradictory concept of the traditional American hero; we will explore how new eco-heroes critique and in certain ways transcend the ways in which notions of age, the body, gender, race, ability, and mobility have defined more classical US-American hero figures.

We will analyze the connections between literature, culture, and the environment in light of 1) the history of American ecological thought and activism (including works by Mary Rowlandson, James Fenimore Cooper and Mary Austin), 2) different strands of ecocriticism (eco-feminism and postcolonial ecocriticism) and 3) literary representations of eco-heroines in works by Octavia E. Butler, Linda Hogan, Barbara Kingsolver, Leslie Marmon Silko and Gloria Anzaldúa.

This course is designed specifically for students of all teaching degrees ("Lehrämter") who prepare for the written "Staatsexamen" in American Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other final exams - oral or written - are very welcome, too.

The "Repetitorum" is meant to assist students in their preparations for the final written exam. The class, however, does NOT substitute each student’s individual study time! During class, students will receive immediate feedback about their level of preparation for the final exam. The most important aim of this class, however, is to provide participants with a platform to discuss complex issues, rather than particular details of one certain topic. Once again: the class aims to assist students in their preparations, but it does NOT replace independent study!

Inhalt:

This course is designed for students who are preparing or working on a final thesis in American literature or culture, be it a "Magisterarbeit," "Zulassungsarbeit," "BA-Arbeit" or Master’s thesis. It offers continuous support during the process of preparing or writing the thesis, and provides an opportunity to share parts of it with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions; the syllabus and readings will be available on the Virtual Campus.

In the plenary sessions, we will discuss general criteria and formal aspects of a thesis – such as possible topics and research questions, theoretical approaches, and structural issues. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you will discuss the argument and structure of your thesis with me. For students who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies in the BA, MA and new teacher training programs, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung."

Inhalt:

The last decades have seen a dramatic increase in popular cultural products that appear to address environmental issues from a variety of critical perspectives. But do they? What happens when current multi-million blockbuster films focus on the land, the oceans, other-than-human creatures, and human-nonhuman relationships? How do such films’ seemingly overt environmental perspectives relate to their more complicated cultural and political subtexts, and how do we negotiate their green gestures with their implication in big business?

This seminar combines the study of American popular culture with the critical tools developed by environmental literary and cultural criticism in order to discuss the generic conventions, storylines, and aesthetic choices of recent films in conjunction with their potential ecological relevance. Focusing on a paradigmatic set of films such as The Day after Tomorrow (2004, SciFi disaster), Avatar (2009, SciFi), Chasing Ice (2012, documentary), Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012, drama), and The Jungle Book (2017, fantasy adventure / Disney remake), we will also analyze the intersection of environmental concerns with those of racial justice and gender equality, regional and global perspectives, and recent debates about nonhuman others and their agency.

Students should come to this seminar with an interest in bringing complex theoretical and conceptual approaches to the study of American cultural products.

Inhalt:

This course aims to assist students in the Basismodul in writing their first term paper in literary or cultural studies in Bamberg. We will discuss general formal aspects and content related criteria of an academic paper, such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Primarily, however, we will practice how to choose a topic, how to develop a coherent structure, how to involve theoretical frameworks, and how to adhere to the MLA citation rules. Finally, we will discuss the different types of source material that are suitable for the list of references of your paper. Students have the chance to present a provisional outline in a closed discussion forum, where they will receive feedback from fellow students and the instructor.

This course is also addressed at students in the Vertiefungsmodul who are preparing or working at a BA-thesis in American Literature or Culture. Therefore, this course provides the guidance sessions for the BA thesis (Betreuungsübung) for students in the BA programs who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies. It assists students in the preparation of their final paper, and gives them an opportunity to discuss their work with other students. BA-candidates will present parts of their final paper, offering it for discussion and feedback. If you are planning to attend this class, make sure that the instructor will also be your thesis advisor. Please contact Ms. Konopka well in advance to discuss your topic and the requirements for the supervision.

This seminar is an internet-based survey course that offers students in the “Aufbaumodul Literaturwissenschaft” an overview of the main developments in US-American literary history. The class will help students to understand the links between literary periods, their central ideas, and important stylistic features. The course provides participants with detailed information about the complexities that underlie and connect each literary work and period. The course’s other main goal is to familiarize students with key texts and key discourses of US-American literature, such as race, class, and gender. The texts were chosen because they either represent crucial aspects of their respective literary periods, or because they address topics and concepts that were controversial at this particular point in history.

Despite being an E-Learning course, this is a discussion-based class, so active participation is crucial. Participants are required to contribute to class discussions by posting at least two quality responses per forum. Your learning process will be enabled through your active involvement in the different assignments, which are designed to allow you as much creative freedom as possible while assisting you in your reading and understanding of the poems, short stories, novels, and plays.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, class and economic success, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, America as nature s nation; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary readings will include short stories, poems, and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs, and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American literature with a focus on American literature.

We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction, and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of American literary history. The focus, however, will be on the discussion of textual examples from these various vantage points. The goal of this course is to enable you to articulate up-to-date readings of texts from different genres, in their cultural contexts, informed by key theories and analytical methods.

Please note that the first tutorial (Monday, 2-4 pm, same room) will take place AFTER the first regular session!

Inhalt:

In this seminar, we will study trends and schools in literary theory since the 1950s. Our reading will be chosen from the key texts by thinkers identified with formalism and structuralism, deconstruction and post-structuralism, gender studies and queer theory, psychoanalytical criticism, (Neo-)Marxism and Cultural Materialism, New Historicism, postcolonial criticism, and reader-response theory.

The course is intended to assist students in both finding their own approaches towards primary texts and in identifying mind-sets and methods applied in the secondary sources they read in their other seminars: "What theory demonstrates [...] is that there is no position free of theory, not even the one called common sense." (V. B. Leitch).

This class is based not only on the reading, but also the in depth analysis of theoretical writing. Therefore, students are expected to prepare diligently for each session by (1) reading the assigned text(s), (2) studying each text's background/context, and (3) establishing some basic understanding of the theory discussed in the respective text before coming to class! Only then will it be possible for us to engage in critical discussion during our sessions. In sum, it is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend all sessions and contribute to class discussions. Your input is mandatory and will be welcome!

A course reader will be available for students of this class after the first session, when the reading list has been agreed upon.

Inhalt:: The Media Session is designed as an extension of those classes of the American Studies Section that work with movies. However, we encourage all students to attend the movie sessions, because we show American classics as well as classics inspired by America.

This semester we will focus on the summer camp, a place of loveable goofs, adult idiocy, adolescent self-discovery and teenage mayhem that has been of interest to film makers since the 1950s. The quintessential summer camp – cabins and campfire, deep woods and even deeper lakes, sports contests and stage productions – is the setting for comedies, tragedies, horror movies, and cinematic satires. Our program will take us from the early 1960s to the 2010s, which will give us a chance to observe the development of the summer camp movie against the backdrop of artistic and socio-political changes in US-American culture.

Inhalt:

Motherhood and Fatherhood have always been central themes in African American literature and culture. Under the inhumane institution of slavery, enslaved parents and their children were routinely separated for reasons of profit and social control. At the same time, black women were frequently expected to take care of their mistresses children and forced to bear their masters . Until today, the trauma of slavery and of other forms of racial violence committed against black children and their caretakers continue to feature prominently in work of art by African Americans. Engaging with these traumatic histories and experiences, but also with histories of resistance and dreams of a better future, Black writers and artists have explored family lineages and relations, countering racist stereotypes surrounding black parenthood and imagining an America in which Black families of whatever constellation are safe from racial violence and discrimination.

In this course, we will use concepts of critical race studies to examine literary texts and cultural artifacts from the 18th to the 21st century in order to discuss representations of Black families in African American culture. We will read poetry and narratives dealing with slavery and its aftermath as well as short stories and plays addressing African American experiences of motherhood and fatherhood between the turn of the century and WWII. During the second half of the course, we will analyze works by artists from the Civil Rights era to the present, looking not only at depictions of Black mothers, fathers, and families in literary texts but also in popular music, painting, and on screen.

Inhalt:

The nineteenth century marks a key moment not only in the history of American literature and culture, but also in the development of America s environmental thought. This upper level seminar addresses key aspects of American environmental history in a decidedly interdisciplinary fashion, combining theoretical concepts and approaches from the fields of Historiography with those of American Literary and Cultural Studies. We will first discuss the two fields respective conceptual frameworks and methods (environmental historiography, and environmental literary and cultural studies). From this double perspective, we will then explore issues such as the environmental significance of the Westward movement, the settler-colonial warfare against Native Americans, the emergence of ecology and other increasingly specialized natural sciences, key arguments of early conservationist and preservationist debates and controversies over the first national parks, and links between slavery, Civil War, and views of the nonhuman environment. Our discussions will be based on a wide range of readings, including classic nature essays, autobiographical texts, regionalist short stories, nature poems, and slave narratives. Students have to read all texts before the beginning of the seminar week.

This compact seminar (Blockseminar), taught by Prof. Christine Gerhardt (American Studies) and Prof. Sabine Freitag (Modern and Contemporary History), offers a unique chance to study formative aspects of American environmental history in the special atmosphere of a study retreat in the French Alps (Chalet Giersch, Manigod), from Aug. 25 (Sunday) Sept. 01 (Sunday) 2019.
We can accommodate 18 students (ideally 9 from History, 9 from English/American Studies).

Inhalt:

The video game has now emerged as a dominant media form of contemporary American culture. This seminar will examine the video game as a storytelling medium, addressing the features that distinguish video games from other narrative texts. We will study the relationship of video games to literature in today's global media ecology, the transformation of the "text" from a discrete object to a transmedia narrative system. We will also investigate the ways that video games position themselves as interactive fictions whose characters, plotlines and gameplay mechanics draw upon, and contribute to, broader literary traditions.
