Inhalt:

This lecture provides an overview of American literary history from the 1880s until today, focusing on the characteristic features of realism, naturalism, modernism, and post-modernism.

For each of these periods, the thematic, formal and stylistic elements of a wide range of novels, plays, short stories, poems, and essays will be discussed in the broader context of the United States' cultural and intellectual history. In order to understand how different groups of Americans have imagined their culture at specific moments in time, we will analyze texts that address the diversity of American experiences in terms of race, class, gender, region, and political conviction. We will also explore how literary texts have critically engaged with the past and with other cultures, charting new directions for the relationship between literature and culture. Overall, we will investigate to which degree processes of modernization and the ideal of democratization can be understood as one of American literature's major driving forces.

Inhalt:

Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor's book Vibration Cooking or the Travel Notes of a Geechee Girl was considered the first "black" mainstream cookbook. The book, performative in nature, not only provides recipes but also anecdotes and personal narratives related to specific food items and dishes. A New York Times bestseller, the book catapulted Smart-Grosvenor to host a weekly television program and NPR segment from the 80's to the early '90s. Smart-Grosvenor coined the term culinary anthropologist, yet today she and her work are almost lost in obscurity.

Smart-Grosvenor was always already making the critical connections between African American foodways and how it works to define the concept of American food and foodways. This seminar interrogates food and the construction and concept of "American." Specifically, the seminar considers food as material culture to demonstrate how food preferences and traditions that are considered "American" tell us about continental histories and cultures. Yet recognizing that the concept of "Americanness" is contested, and engaging in history is to unravel and examine multiple discourses of power, through the lens of performance. Smart-Grosvenor destabilizes how we think about food, how we think of America, and how we think of identity.

The seminar will explore the panoply of food objects and performance by engaging in for example, food books (e.g., cookbooks, food memoirs) not only as instructional manuals for the culinary arts and repositories for traditional dishes, but also as reflections on food habits of a population, as historical markers of major events, and as records of technological advances in a society. They also provide narratives of self-development, interpersonal engagements, and intercultural negotiations as they recount relational life stories. Succinctly, using food as a point of interrogation, this course will invite students to work with the key analytical categories of race, gender, sexuality, and nation in the context of American Studies.

Inhalt:

This course is designed specifically for students of all teaching degrees ("Lehrämter") who prepare for the written "Staatsexamen" in American Literature according to the new LPO. Students preparing other final exams - oral or written - are also welcome.

The "Repetitorium" is meant to assist students in their preparations for the final written exam. However, it is no substitute for each student's individual study time. During class, participants will receive immediate feedback on their level of preparation for the final exam, and discuss overarching questions of American Literature that they have prepared in advance. Once again: the class aims to assist students in their preparations, but it does not replace independent study.

The participants themselves choose the topics for this semester during the first session, so please come prepared.

Inhalt:

This course is designed for students who are preparing or working on a final thesis in American literature or culture, be it a "Magisterarbeit," "Zulassungsarbeit," "BA-Arbeit" or Master’s thesis. It offers continuous support during the process of preparing or writing the thesis, and provides an opportunity to share parts of it with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions; the syllabus and readings will be available on the Virtual Campus.

In the plenary sessions, we will discuss general criteria and formal aspects of a thesis – such as possible topics and research questions, theoretical approaches, and structural issues. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you will discuss the argument and structure of your thesis with me. For students who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies in the BA, MA and new teacher training programs, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung."

Inhalt:

What do we mean when we talk about the literary canon? Who shapes this canon, based on which criteria, and whom does it include and exclude?

These questions are particularly relevant for American literature and the radical changes that have been made to the canon over the last several decades. Traditionally, the American canon as taught in high schools and universities was mostly white and mostly male. In the wake of the Civil Rights and feminist movements of the 1960s and 70s, which lead to an increasing scholarly interest in the literatures of previously marginalized social groups, the canon has expanded exponentially to include works by women, African Americans, and Latinx authors, among others. At the same time, however, the ways in which new or newly discussed genres, such as American nature writing, are now being published and taught in schools and universities often go back to limited notions of authorship that seemed long overcome. In this course, we will look at how questions of race and gender have shaped and continue to shape what is considered great literature in the United States and how the expansion of the canon has changed the American literary landscape.

Inhalt:

In this course, we will read Herman Melville's classic American novel Moby-Dick; or, The Whale (1851) from a variety of perspectives such as transnational American studies and critical race theory, post-humanist theory, ecocriticism, and animal studies, gender studies and queer theory. Based on close readings of Moby-Dick and readings of essays on current literary and cultural theory, we will move through the novel slowly, chapter by chapter, discussing its complex aesthetic achievements (or "wickedness") while looking at the ways in which the narrative puts pressure on some of the core issues of its cultural moment, including national identity, slavery, immigration, and cultural contact, the natural environment and ecology, gender and sexuality. The main objective of the course is to be able to combine theoretically informed close reading skills (textual analysis) with an understanding of the issues that shaped American culture in tension or contact with other cultures.

Please purchase a copy of Moby-Dick (a critical edition with footnotes, such as Norton Critical Edition, 2nd ed. ISBN 978-0393972832) before our first session, and start reading asap – ideally, read the entire novel during the semester break.

Inhalt:

This course aims to assist students in the Basismodul in writing their first term paper in literary or cultural studies in Bamberg. We will discuss general formal aspects and content related criteria of an academic paper, such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Primarily, however, we will practice how to choose a topic, how to develop a coherent structure, how to involve theoretical frameworks, and how to adhere to the MLA citation rules. Finally, we will discuss the different types of source material that are suitable for the list of references of your paper. Students have the chance to present a provisional outline in a closed discussion forum, where they will receive feedback from fellow students and the instructor.

This course is also addressed at students in the Vertiefungsmodul who are preparing or working at a BA-thesis in American Literature or Culture. Therefore, this course provides the guidance sessions for the BA thesis (Betreuungsübung) for students in the BA programs who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies. It assists students in the preparation of their final paper, and gives them an opportunity to discuss their work with other students. BA-candidates will present parts of their final paper, offering it for discussion and feedback. If you are planning to attend this class, make sure that the instructor will also be your thesis advisor. Please contact Ms. Konopka well in advance to discuss your topic and the requirements for the supervision.

Please note that this is a practical training course and not a lecture! You are expected to participate in the tasks and discussions.

This seminar is an internet-based survey course that offers students in the “Aufbaumodul Literaturwissenschaft” an overview of the main developments in US-American literary history. The class will help students to understand the links between literary periods, their central ideas, and important stylistic features. The course provides participants with detailed information about the complexities that underlie and connect each literary work and period. The course’s other main goal is to familiarize students with key texts and key discourses of US-American literature, such as race, class, and gender. The texts were chosen because they either represent crucial aspects of their respective literary periods, or because they address topics and concepts that were controversial at this particular point in history.

Despite being an E-Learning course, this is a discussion-based class, so active participation is crucial. Participants are required to contribute to class discussions by posting at least two quality responses per forum. Your learning process will be enabled through your active involvement in the different assignments, which are designed to allow you as much creative freedom as possible while assisting you in your reading and understanding of the poems, short stories, novels, and plays.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, class and economic success, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, America as nature s nation; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary readings will include short stories, poems, and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs, and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American literature with a focus on American literature.

We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction, and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of American literary history. The focus, however, will be on the discussion of textual examples from these various vantage points. The goal of this course is to enable you to articulate up-to-date readings of texts from different genres, in their cultural contexts, informed by key theories and analytical methods.

Inhalt:

In this seminar, we will study trends and schools in literary theory since the 1950s. Our reading includes key texts by thinkers identified with formalism and structuralism, deconstruction and post-structuralism, gender studies and queer theory, psychoanalytical criticism, (Neo-)Marxism and Cultural Materialism, New Historicism, postcolonial criticism, and reader-response theory.

The course is intended to assist students in both finding their own approaches towards primary texts and in identifying mind-sets and methods applied in the secondary sources they read in their other seminars: "What theory demonstrates [...] is that there is no position free of theory, not even the one called common sense." (V. B. Leitch).

This class is based not only on the reading, but also the in-depth analysis of theoretical writing. Therefore, students are expected to prepare diligently for each session by (1) reading the assigned text(s), (2) studying each text's background/context, and (3) establishing some basic understanding of the theory discussed in the respective text before coming to class! Only then will it be possible for us to engage in critical discussion during our sessions. In sum, it is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend all sessions and contribute to class discussions. Your input is mandatory and will be welcome!

Inhalt:: The Media Session is designed as an extension of those classes of the American Studies Section that work with movies. However, we encourage all students to attend the movie sessions, because we show American classics as well as classics inspired by America.

What would you do if you woke up in a different body one day? This question has long fascinated filmmakers and writers alike. This semester we will explore the intriguing theme of body switching in American film. We will embark on a journey through the decades of US movie history and join the body switchers on their journey of self-discovery. Our movie selection starts as early as 1931 and will take us all the way to the present, making evident the everlasting temptation of this literal out-of-body experience.

Inhalt:

Associated with the "unintentionally ridiculous and monstrous" (Clayborough) as well as with "exaggeration, hyperbolism, [and] excessiveness" (Bakhtin), the grotesque has been used to describe landscapes, bodies, behaviors, psychological states, and artworks that trouble what is considered "real," "normal," or "decent."

In this comparative course, we will discuss French and American literature of the grotesque from the 19th and 20th century, exploring the forms, effects, and functions of representations that merge the beautiful and the ugly, good and evil, laugher and terror, disgust and compassion. Reading authors such as Victor Hugo, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Baudelaire, Mathilde Ermery (Rachilde), William Faulkner, Louis-Ferdinand Céline and Flannery O’Connor, we will examine how the grotesque relates to horror, the gothic, and the absurd. Moreover, we will try to understand what scholars mean when they argue for the grotesque as a critique of capitalism or colonialism, when they contrast a "European" and an "American" grotesque, or when they try to describe precisely how the ludicrous and the horrifying manifest in the literature of the U.S. South after slavery or in French modernist literature after WWI.

The course will be taught partly in German (the sessions on French literature) and partly in English (the sessions on American literature). Students should read the assigned text in their original versions whenever possible, and in translation only when necessary.

Inhalt:

Following W. Scott Pool's claim that "from our colonial past to the present, the monster in all its various forms has been a staple of American culture," this class is designed to identify and critically analyze the multiple and contradictory presences of such "monsters" in American literature and culture.

We will start with a brief historical and conceptual overview, consulting historical maps of the world, the anonymous Physiologus (200 AD), medieval almanacs, transatlantic travel accounts, freak show advertisements, medical journals, criminal records, and court files. Moving through North American history from pre-colonial times to the present, we will then study a variety of texts, such as Native American tall tales, crafts and imagery, short stories, poems, newspaper articles, pictures, TV shows and movies with an analytical focus on their changing representations of "monstrosity" as a particular kind of otherness.

As we navigate through the complex universe of surreal distortion, we will try to answer the following questions: How have "monsters" been defined in America, and how have these definitions changed over time? What is culturally specific about 'American' monsters? Which culturally and historically specific fears (and perhaps also longings) have been projected on these monstrous "others", and to which effects?

Note: This tutorial is linked to the Introduction to English and American Literature taught by Dr. Nicole K. Konopka (Tuesday, 4-6 p.m.). The first session takes place after the first seminar session took place!
Inhalt:: In the course of the semester, we will focus on the basics of prose, drama and poetry analysis. This tutorial further provides room for discussion, practice and exam preparation. Students are expected to show active participation, and to be able to apply the contents of the tutorial in the follow-up sessions with Dr. Nicole K. Konopka.

Please note that the first tutorial will take place AFTER the first regular session with Mrs Konopka!
