Much of US-American culture has been shaped by histories of migration both global migrations to the US, and internal migrations within and across the North American continent. The impact of migration on American culture and its narratives can hardly be overestimated. On the one hand, the US has long prided itself to be able to absorb people, languages, and cultures from all over the world; the American Dream and the idea that the US was destined to spread from Atlantic to Pacific are deeply linked to concepts of migration. On the other hand, the slave trade and Native American relocations profoundly contradict idealizing notions of the US as nation of immigrants.

We will study formative moments in the history of American migration, from the first arrival of European colonists to major moments of mass immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries. Focusing on key phenomena such as the California gold rush and the dust bowl, the African American Great Migration to the North and the shift of wealthy whites to the sunbelt South, we will discuss how different forms of migratory unrest have shaped American cultures.

At the same time, we will explore which role literature has played in negotiating the meanings of migration in the US. Reading a selection of short stories by different (im)migrant authors, we will ask: how do migration stories shape but also critique dominant ideas of the Melting Pot, the American Dream, or the Frontier? Which roles do family, food, education, or the natural world play in the migratory imagination? How do ethnicity and gender inflect these stories perspectives? And which formal and aesthetic features characterize American literature of migration?

Organization:
This is a regular seminar for which you can get 2 8 ECTS points in English and American Studies, or in History, or for the Studium Generale. It will take place as a compact seminar (Blockseminar) at a study center in the French Alps (Chalet Giersch, Manigod), Aug. 14 (Fr) Aug. 21 (Fr) 2020, with a pre-meeting on April 28, 2020 (6-8 p.m. sharp, U9/01.11).

We will travel by car in small groups; the week costs about 120,-- (double room) plus 60,-- (food) per student.

Requirements:
The seminar will be held in German and English. Students can use the language they feel most comfortable with, but should be able to follow discussions and read short texts in both languages. Each participant should give a 20-minute presentation. For a grade, you can write a final paper or take an oral exam.

Readings:
We will read 10-15 short stories, and a number of historical and conceptual essays about migration history and literature. All texts will be made available on the Virtual Campus by April.

Inhalt:

This interdisciplinary course offers an introduction to the aesthetic, cultural, and political significance of contemporary Arab-American literature from the joint perspectives of Arabic Studies and American Studies. We will focus on how Arab-American literature has been informed by and speaks back to two major contexts: the historical and current developments in diverse Arab cultures, and the shifting role of the United States as a “nation of immigrants.” Starting out from a survey of the historical dynamics that have shaped major strands of Arab-American migration, we will read a selection of novels, short stories, and poems to discuss how specific thematic concerns and formal features resonate in various Arab, American, and Arab-American frameworks. Throughout our readings, we will engage with critical concepts such as migration and diaspora, postcolonialism and transnationalism, orientalism and memory, race and gender, so students are expected to come to this seminar with an interest in theoretical issues as well. All readings are in English.

Please note: This course starts during the week April 20-25, when important information about the organization this semester will be shared. Therefore, make sure to be registered for this class on FlexNow before Tuesday, April 21, 2020! Registered students will then be signed into the respective VC class by the instructor.

This course aims to assist students in the Basismodul in writing their first term paper in literary or cultural studies in Bamberg. We will discuss general formal aspects and content related criteria of an academic paper, such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Primarily, however, we will practice how to choose a topic, how to develop a coherent structure, how to involve theoretical frameworks, and how to adhere to the MLA citation rules. Finally, we will discuss the different types of source material that are suitable for the list of references of your paper. Students have the chance to present a provisional outline in a closed discussion forum, where they will receive feedback from fellow students and the instructor.

This course is also addressed at students in the Vertiefungsmodul who are preparing or working at a BA-thesis in American Literature or Culture. Therefore, this course provides the guidance sessions for the BA thesis (Betreuungsübung) for students in the BA programs who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies. It assists students in the preparation of their final paper, and gives them an opportunity to discuss their work with other students. BA-candidates will present parts of their final paper, offering it for discussion and feedback. If you are planning to attend this class, make sure that the instructor will also be your thesis advisor. Please contact Ms. Konopka well in advance to discuss your topic and the requirements for the supervision.

Please note that this is a practical training course and not a lecture! You are expected to participate in the tasks and discussions.

Inhalt:

This seminar is an internet-based survey course that offers students in the “Aufbaumodul Literaturwissenschaft” an overview of the main developments in US-American literary history. The class will help students to understand the links between literary periods, their central ideas, and important stylistic features. The course provides participants with detailed information about the complexities that underlie and connect each literary work and period. The course’s other main goal is to familiarize students with key texts and key discourses of US-American literature, such as race, class, and gender. The texts were chosen because they either represent crucial aspects of their respective literary periods, or because they address topics and concepts that were controversial at this particular point in history.

Despite being an E-Learning course, this is a discussion-based class, so active participation is crucial. Participants are required to contribute to class discussions by posting at least two quality responses per forum. Your learning process will be enabled through your active involvement in the different assignments, which are designed to allow you as much creative freedom as possible while assisting you in your reading and understanding of the poems, short stories, novels, and plays.

Thomas More, who coined the term and established the (modern) genre of utopian literature with the publication of Utopia (1516), took inspiration for his description of the fictional island of Utopia from the travel accounts of Amerigo Vespucci and Christopher Columbus (Veiera, “The concept of utopia” 3). In turn, his work—together with the “earthly paradise” these early explorers described—shaped European ideas about a “New World Eden” that led persecuted religious groups such as the Puritans to leave England in the hope of establishing a model “City Upon a Hill” in the “Promised Land” across the Atlantic. During the struggle for independence, this “early, pre-national utopian imaginary” (Paul, The Myths that Made America 12) was transformed into a “consciously constructed new world utopia” (Ostendorf, as qtd. In Paul 12) that also entered the founding documents of the United States. The famous preamble of the Constitution of 1789 for example reads: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, [….] do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” As some scholars have suggested, the Republic that is established with this document is not simply declared a “more perfect Union” than the American colonies here, it is also established as a utopian project, that is, as a political project that depends on an ongoing struggle for “a more perfect Union.”

Associated with such enduring cultural narratives as the “American Adam” and “Manifest Destiny,” the utopian imagination has always been associated with ideas of liberty and progress in U.S. American Culture. Yet, from the very beginning, it has also been linked to horrific acts of violence, including but not limited to colonization (as a political movement to settle the “New World”), slavery (as an economic system intent to develop the “American Garden”), and the eugenics movement of the late 19th century (as a pseudo-scientific project to improve the “American Race”). In this course, we will explore the tenacious link between utopia and violence in American culture. Focusing on historical documents from the early 16th to the mid-19th century, we will discuss what forms the “American Utopia” took at different points in time and what kinds of violence were glossed over or considered permissible in order to achieve it. Reading selected literary utopias from the late 19th and early 20th century, we will examine how gender, race, and class conflict are depicted in these texts, and what role nature and technology play in how these texts imagine “more perfect” but not necessarily “less violent” futures.
