- For beginners and beyond: The Theatre Workshop is an introduction to the study of creative process that allows students to unlock their creative potential, express their individuality, and enhance their personal and professional lives. Students strengthen their presence and confidence in front of others, improve their oral skills and get the chance to dive into the world of theatre and acting.
At the end of the semester, there will be a small performance.

- Inhalt:
- This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a final thesis in English or American Literature, be it a "Magisterarbeit", "Zulassungsarbeit", "BA-Arbeit" or Master's thesis. It is supposed to offer continuous support to students while preparing or writing their theses, and to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions. A definite schedule will be set up in the first meeting of the class. There will be a site on the Virtual Campus; access will be given upon registration.
In the plenary sessions, we shall discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis - such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students in the BA, MA and new teacher training programmes, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-programme. Students in the Magister- and old teacher training programmes are advised to take this course to support them while writing their theses. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.
The course will be taught every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session.

- Inhalt:
- “I’ll not listen to reason […]. Reason always means what someone else has got to say” (Martha in Cranford). Reason, when merely listened to instead of being continuously challenged, mediates normed ideology. Martha, however, refrains from accepting normed ideology and thus formulates an intellectual approach recognisable in many of Elizabeth Gaskell’s heroines and heroes. Even if Mary Smith and the ladies of Cranford, Margaret Hale and John Thornton, Molly Gibson and the gentlemen of Hamley Hall first have to overcome their own ideological prides and prejudices, they finally strive for individual autonomy and a right of independent thought and action; they thus challenge a Victorian society which is normed and maintained by widely accepted class- and gender-specific ideologies and which denies the individual subject’s ambivalence. In her novels, Gaskell demonstrates extraordinary perceptiveness for the individual subject’s diversity and its conflict between ideologically determined and independent reason, between bodily and mental heteronomy and autonomy. Focusing on (the adaptations of) Cranford, North and South and Wives and Daughters, we will closely scrutinise – using different social and literary theories and covering the substantial differences between the "gentle" South and the "industrial" North of England – the characters’ tightrope walk through Victorian society, their explosive encounters with Victorian institutions and their alarming meetings with Victorian individuals who are thoroughly determined to maintain the status quo. In their struggle for independence, Gaskell’s characters realise that the power of normed ideology is maintained not only by those social institutions in power (nobility, church, enterprise, trade union) but also by those individuals accepting power for their convenience; encountering such opposition, it often remains disturbingly debatable if Gaskell’s heroines and heroes can finally liberate themselves and others in formulating a reason which is free of (normed) ideology and which allows them to remain independent in accepting ambivalence.
Nevertheless, even if it often remains unclear if Gaskell’s protagonists succeed in liberating themselves and others, Gaskell always succeeds in liberating her readers who, though drawn into her stories which are captivating, romantic and heart-warming, are forced to consider and re-consider the power structures permeating the normative society depicted in her novels, novellas and short stories; this liberation continues today when Gaskell’s novels are re-discovered, unsurprisingly in a time when the individual subject – maybe more than ever – is facing ideological heteronomy, and when Gaskell, who has relentlessly and severely criticised ideology, is finally acknowledged as one of the great female writers of English literary history.
By the beginning of the seminar, participants are expected to have read Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford (1851-53), North and South (1854-55) and Wives and Daughters (1864-66); further reading assignments will be announced in class and made available in VC (excerpts from Mary Barton (1848), Ruth (1853), Sylvia’s Lover’s (1863); selected short stories). Knowledge of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice will be appreciated for comparative studies. Participants are equally expected to have seen Cranford (BBC, 2007), North and South (BBC, 2004) and Wives and Daughters (BBC, 1999). Watching the adaptations is no substitute for reading the original narratives.
Participants are expected to attend class regularly, to raise discussions, to prepare a presentation and discussion including group work and to write a term paper of about 3000-4000 words.

- All participants are expected to have access to a copy of Cranford, North and South and Wives and Daughters; adaptations do not need to be purchased but are available in the Semesterapparat.

- Inhalt:
- In this course, we will read – in great detail – excerpts from the works of five of the greatest wordsmiths in the English language: Shakespeare, Marlowe, Spenser, Jonson, and Milton. We will focus on their reception of Greek and Roman myths. By exploring how these Renaissance poets used the stories of the ancient gods, heroes, and lovers, we will be able to discuss central concepts of Renaissance poetry (like imitatio), learn about five canonical authors and their work (core Staatsexamen material), get to know some of the most powerful myths in European arts, and read magnificent poetry that you might find difficult to approach on your own. Primary reading will include Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, Antony and Cleopatra, Marlowe’s Hero and Leander, Spenser’s Faerie Queene (book 2, canto xxii), several shorter poems by Jonson, excerpts from Milton’s Paradise Lost, and passages from Quintilian, Ovid and Virgil in English translation. Except for the two Shakespeare plays (I recommend you buy the Arden edition), the primary reading will be available as a PDF/ folder in October, at the beginning of term.

- This course is designed specifically for students of all "Lehrämter" who prepare for the written "Staatsexamen" in English Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other - oral or written - final exams are very welcome, too.
This semester, we will start with "Thema 1: Dramatische Texte der Renaissance" and then tackle three to four more "Staatsexamen" topics. These will be chosen by the class participants themselves during the first session.
We will meet for a workshop to discuss "Staatsexamen" questions of previous years.

- Inhalt:
- In this course we will approach literature using queer theory, a fairly recent critical perspective that allows for questioning heteronormativity by identifying all sexual identities as cultural constructs. As it has come to be understood in cultural theory queer theory challenges either/or, essentialist notions of homosexuality and heterosexuality within the mainstream discourse, and instead posits an understanding of sexuality that emphasizes shifting boundaries, ambivalences, and cultural constructions that change depending on historical and cultural context.
At first we will talk about the contested categories of sex and gender and trace the development of both the term queer and the history of queer theory, reading seminal essays by theorists such as Michel Foucault and Judith Butler. We will discuss how queer theory formulates racial, class and national identities in relation to sexuality and learn about Eve Sedgwick s queer re-assessment of canonical literature and attempts to establish a queer canon in literature and elsewhere. After having introduced concepts like camp and queer appreciation, performativity, queer sensibility, masculinity and queer authorship, we will move on to consider prose texts by so-called LGBTIQ writers (a category that we need to discuss), concentrating on the literary representation of same-sex desire. We will move from texts written prior to the gay and lesbian liberation movements of the late 1960s (e.g. E.M. Forster, Christopher Isherwood) to more recent texts and plays that negotiate the cultural, social and political implications of sexuality and gender from the perspective of those marginalized by the dominant sexual ethos (e.g. by Jeanette Winterson, Mark Ravenhill, Alan Holinghurst). We will pay special attention to the HIV/Aids discourse that has shaped both queer studies and queer writing from the mid-1980s onwards. Additionally we may have a look at some more popular takes on queerness in British TV (e.g. Queer as Folk) and recent film (e.g. The Iron Lady, Deep Blue Sea)
In the first half of the semester, we will read the following three SHORT novels:

- Inhalt:
- In this seminar we will study trends and schools in literary theory since the 1950s.
We may discuss key texts by thinkers identified with formalism and structuralism, deconstruction and poststructuralism, gender studies and queer theory, psychoanalytical criticism, (Neo)Marxism and Cultural Materialism, New Historicism, postcolonial criticism and reader-response theory.
Depending on the participants personal interests, we may also consider more recent approaches like ecocriticism and possible-worlds theory or less "canonized" theories (e.g. systems theory).
The course is intended to assist students in both finding own approaches towards primary texts and in identifying mind-sets and methods applied in the secondary sources they read in their other seminars: "What theory demonstrates [ ] is that there is no position free of theory, not even the one called common sense." (V. B. Leitch).
I expect participants to actively contribute to the discussion and give small presentations.

- Inhalt:
- The British author Hanif Kureishi has been a major influence on contemporary English literature for the past 25 years. His works include novels, screenplays, short stories, essays and plays and in all of them Kureishi deals with contemporary issues such as nationalism, generational conflicts, racism or fanaticism. His characters experience the problems of forming an identity of their own within the area of tension created by these different layers of conflict. This course is going to examine which layers of conflict can be found in Kureishi’s works and how they influence his characters and plots. Moreover, we will have a look at the social origins of contemporary social problems as handled by Kureishi. The predominant aim of this course, however, is to analyse Kureishi’s work in depth and find out why it is so appealing to the reader or audience.
Participants are asked to enrol for the VC course where further reading will be announced and study material will be provided. Students will also be expected to have read The Buddha of Suburbia, The Black Album and Something to Tell You before the first session. Guest auditors are very welcome.
In order to obtain credits, participants should attend class regularly and take part in discussions. Moreover, they need to give one presentation in class (topic to be given by and discussed with the lecturer in advance) and hand in a term paper (length dependent on module and course of studies).

- Inhalt:
- This lecture series is offered in response to an imminent change in the regulations for the Bavarian "Staatsexamen": in the future, students will no longer be able to pass an oral exam in Literature but will have to write a "Klausur". One of the very few safe options to the Literature "Staatsexamen" will be a thorough knowledge of Early Modern Literature, mainly Shakespeare. Accordingly, this lecture series will cover Shakespeare's entire oeuvre and also provide some background information on the Elizabethan and Jacobean period. The first half of each session will be devoted to one particular subgenre or group of Shakespeare's works and the second half will introduce one example of this subgenre in greater detail.

- One of the oldest forms of cultural expression, drama varies across time and place. In this Übung we will read plays of the last seventy years - acknowledged "classics" of modern drama that can be found on our reading list and contemporary writing for the stage.
If you study literature, the most important thing to do is: read, read and, yes, read. But what to read? This course is designed to offer some help in this dilemma. And it is by no means only addressed at students preparing for their exams - but to any student of English literature, no matter whether first year or last.
Each participant is expected to give a short presentation on the major topics of one play and to lead us into discussion. The main part of each session, however, should be devoted to close readings of scenes from the play, and to situating the text with regard to its historical and social context, genre, performance history (adaptations) and practice.
There will be room to explore the influence of the epic theatre and the theatre of cruelty and we will be reading plays representative of the theatre of the absurd and in-yer-face theatre.
As part of the course, we may attend one or two stagings in the area (Bamberg, Erlangen, Nürnberg). We will thus be able to assess the significance of performance in contemporary culture and negotiate how drama has the potential to re-interpret society on various levels.
We may read plays by Terence Rattigan, Noel Coward, Samuel Beckett, John Osborne, David Hare, Harold Pinter, Peter Shaffer, Caryl Churchill, Michael Frayn, Sarah Kane, Mark Ravenhill, Tom Stoppard, Alan Bennett or Martin McDonagh, to name but a few. In September, I will invite those that have already registered by then to a site on the VC. Students will be asked to participate in a survey on which play they'd like to discuss in class. However, there will be 2-3 set texts that will be announced on the VC. Students should get hold of them as soon as possible. As we will talk about a new play at least every other week, students should be prepared to do a considerable amount of reading during the term.

- Inhalt:
- None of us would be able to imagine a childhood without children s books; even adults often like to read them for relaxation. However, we often tend to underestimate children s and youth fiction as plain entertainment. Just as other fiction, children s books often display rigid power structures which help the readers socialise themselves in a world they are yet to encounter. This course is going to examine how power structures and hierarchies are presented in most children s books and how they can influence the reader. To do so we will assess the genre by different sub-genres, such as school story, adventure novel, and family story. Within these sub-genres, we will deal with Frances Hodgeson Burnett, J.R.R. Tolkien, Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl and J.K. Rowling among others.
Participants are asked to enrol for the VC course in early September where further reading will be announced and study material will be provided. Students will also be expected to have read J.R.R. Tolkien s The Hobbit (watching the film is no substitute!) and Robert Louis Stevenson s Treasure Island before the first session. Please note that this class is going to be very reading intensive and that students are expected to be familiar with the texts announced on the VC. Guest auditors are very welcome.
In order to obtain credits, participants should attend class regularly and take part in discussions. Moreover, they need to give one short presentation in class (topic to be given by and discussed with the lecturer in advance).

- As the proverb has it, an image says more than a thousand words. Similarly a word may conjure up a thousand images. But what happens in our mind when text and image interact directly? How do artists and authors use image and text creatively at the same time?
Equipped with a theoretical foundation, we will explore hybrid and symbiotic forms that combine text and images into one. Material for analysis will range from book illustration to adverts and from ekphrasis (the description of images in literature) to concrete poetry and comics. Given my and probably also your academic training, text (or literature) will probably get slightly more attention but I also look forward to discussing images intensely with you.

- Inhalt:
- This subject is ideally suited for a course compressed into two weekends. The literary texts are all short poems of an almost identical form, and individual examples lend themselves to class presentation and to a term paper combining scholarly research and close reading.
Selections for study will range from the earliest examples in the Renaissance to more recent examples of the form. Most of the concerns of human life have found expression in sonnets including romantic love, personal crisis and introspection, intellectual speculation, mortal anxiety, and war. Both British and American poets will be represented.
Texts:
Copies of the sonnets we will read are available online. It would be helpful for students to buy a copy of The Norton Anthology of Poetry, used or new, any edition, and either the full or shorter edition. This purchase can be done online, and it shouldn t be very expensive. Of course even a portable on-line device could provide instant access to the poems for consideration. A hard copy, however, is always handier and more useful for annotation, and I strongly recommend that you have a hard copy of each poem we discuss in class whether on sheets of paper on in a printed anthology.
Requirements:
Faithful class attendance and perseverance (this course includes some long sessions).
One class presentation of a sonnet not discussed in class.
One approximately 20-page (double-spaced) paper concerning the sonnet presented to the class: any historical, cultural background, if relevant; a succinct survey of scholarly or critical commentary; and then a close reading of the sonnet. Because of the compressed calendar time of the seminar, the paper can be completed and submitted later.

- Inhalt:
- Die Übung führt die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer in die wissenschaftlichen Arbeitstechniken ein. Geübt werden unter anderem die Arbeit mit Sekundärliteratur (Zitieren und Bibliographieren nach Maßgabe des Lehrstuhlstylesheets) sowie Aufbau und Gestaltung einer Hausarbeit. Verpflichtende Übungen zur Vorbereitung sind im VC-Kurs zu finden.
