Inhalt:
In his essay “‘Commonwealth Literature’ Does not Exist,” Salman Rushdie devises the idea of ‘writers from elsewhere’ referring to those contemporary novelists, poets and playwrights who, although often not born into the English language, have chosen it as the medium of their expression. This new definition, in general, is a reaction to the idea of ‘Commonwealth Literature’ as formal and at times flattering appreciation of a diverse group of writers writing in English. According to Rushdie, ‘Commonwealth Literature’, in a sense, also confines all these writers into ghettos together with the cultures from which they originate. Besides, literature written in English after the Second World War is too vast a territory to be measured with any precision if we stick to narrow definitions like ‘Commonwealth Literature’. Great Britain has provided the linguistic, literary and cultural context to what can broadly be called ‘writers from elsewhere’: Salman Rushdie, Kazuo Ishiguro, Timothy Mo and Hanif Kureishi are some of the names that we all know. These novelists are notable examples of immigrant writers who have contributed to British fiction with their transnational outlook and alternative uses of English. In contrast to Rushdie and Ishiguro, who won the Booker Prize, Timothy Mo has been nominated three times but never won because of his unconventional and controversial writing style. Nevertheless, he remains a formidable talent whose work deserves more recognition than it has received to date, especially outside Britain and Hong Kong where he has received most fame.

This course will offer an in-depth look at Timothy Mo’s writing from linguistic, historical and cultural perspectives. We will analyse key literary works of him and try to posit them within the new canon of ‘writers from elsewhere’. The primary objective of this course is to introduce Timothy Mo to students. The secondary goal of this course is to creat a sense of awareness of Timothy Mo's culturally-induced writing style among students.

Inhalt:
Following last semester's 20th-Century British Drama, part I, this course will cover British drama history from the 1950s to the 1980s. Since this is an intensive reading class, we will read and discuss 12 plays(one per week)and situate the plays within British drama history. Specifically, we are going to look at Absurd Drama, the Angry Young Men Movement, and Feminist Drama while tracing the development of postmodernity in drama.
In this class, students need to prepare discussion questions based on each play we read, combining topics and plays as we move along the semester plan. Primarily, the course serves to introduce a broad variety of plays and dramatic movements in the second half of the 20th century and discuss these in comparison.

Join the Bamberg University English Drama Group for our Summer production of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night! Our first meeting on Monday, 20th of April, at 8pm sharp will give us the chance to get to know each other and talk about the play, auditions and other organisational matters. Newcomers are very welcome both as cast and crew - if you'd like to be part of the production, but do not want to be on stage, we would love for you to join our backstage team! Both Doctor Who and Star Trek have been mainstays of science fiction TV for more than five decades. Apart from having produced enormous amounts of content during this time, the respective canons of Star Trek and Doctor Who have also expanded exponentially into a variety of media, such as TV, film, books, or video games. In addition to commissioned media, both shows have found a basis of sustained interest in their respective fandoms, be it in fanfiction, fanfilm, or fanart. It is this decades-long cultural influence and the shows’ intertextuality that make them productive topics for scholarly investigation.
This course will use a variety of theoretical approaches to the study of literature and popular culture, TV shows, and fandom in general, among them Horkheimer and Adorno’s concept of the “culture industry,” Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach to cultural materials, and Henry Jenkins’ work on fan culture, to approach Doctor Who and Star Trek and interrogate their continued success in and influence on British and American science fiction in particular and popular culture in general.

Inhalt:
The seminar aims to trace issues of identity and belonging in texts by Jewish British women writers. In British society ever since World War II, it has been class more than anything else that made it difficult for Jews to define an identity of their own; either they were excluded or they assimilated into society, but they did not have or did not want to have a voice of their own.
In this seminar we will discuss a variety of perspectives that shape Jewish identity in Great Britain by focusing of the contribution of women writers. The topics will include immigration from Eastern Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, exiles who had either escaped or survived the Shoah, the foundation of the State of Israel, the legacy of the Shoah, the Palestinian conflict, orthodox and liberal Judaism, and old and new forms of anti-Semitism.
Among the writers we will discuss is Marjorie Agosin, a Chilean-American writer, who is going to be a guest in our seminar on 17th June. She will talk about and read from her new book, Maps of Memory (2020).

We will read, discuss and include a number of texts. The list below is more than we can actually do in one semester. Inhalt:
This course is designed specifically for students of all "Lehrämter" who prepare for the written "Staatsexamen" in English Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other - oral or written - final exams are very welcome, too.

Students will first revise basic terminology for the analysis of poems, narrative and dramatic texts and receive an overview of literary history. After that, each session will be dedicated to one set of "Staatsexamen" questions from previous years. The course will cover all of the "Körbe" used in Staatsexamen (englische Literatur) (e.g. "Thema 1: Dramatische Texte der Renaissance," "Thema 6: Narrative und expositorische Texte des 19. Jahrhunderts" etc.). After the revision sessions, each session will be divided into a revision of the literary history of the respective "Korb" and a detailed analysis of one state exam question from this "Korb". All participants need to prepare a presentation based on these questions and the literary and historical background for each of them.

Inhalt:
This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a final thesis in English or American Literature, be it a "Magisterarbeit", "Zulassungsarbeit", "BA-Arbeit" or Master's thesis. It is supposed to offer continuous support to students while preparing or writing their theses, and to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions. A definite schedule will be set up in the first meeting of the class. There will be a site on the Virtual Campus; access will be given upon registration.
In the plenary sessions, we shall discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis - such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students in the BA, MA and new teacher training programmes, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-programme. Students in the Magister- and old teacher training programmes are advised to take this course to support them while writing their theses. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.
The course will be taught every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session.

Edward Said, in his seminal work Orientalism, illustrates the Western xenophobic discourse of ‘Othering’. Said’s theory states that since the inception of European Enlightenment and colonization, Western society has essentialized and othered a self-glorifying contrast between its own civilized society and primitive, unenlightened cultures outside of Europe. This is a prevalent theme in many literary texts and films. One of the most obvious example would be Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness that depicted Africa and African highly in a denigrating characterization by Marlow’s repetitious use of the word ‘savage’ in reference to African Americans, which connotes being uncivilized and archaic. Therefore, levelled Africa and African as the Other!

This course will introduce ideas, theories and examples of the representation of Otherness. The overall aim is to introduce a greater degree of awareness and self-reflection in relation to studying ‘other’ cultures. This course will introduce key terms and ideas that will be used to understand, interpret and analyze texts and films pertaining to the idea of the Other. To do that, following terms will be discussed: Edward Said and Orientalism; Colonialism; Postcolonialism and its theories; and issues of constructing the Other. Throughout the course, we will explore specific texts and films that illustrate themes emerging from a consideration of these theoretical concepts.

Women are being infringed, marginalized and discriminated in the liberal West as well as in the conservative Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran based on whether they wear the hijab or not. In France, women face financial penalty for wearing the Muslim head covering in schools and on beaches. Contrastingly, in Saudi Arabia and Iran they are fined and even arrested for not wearing the hijab. In these instances, women fall into a subaltern category where against the will of the politicians they are helpless and cannot decide for themselves what to wear and what not to wear.
Muslim women are often presented in the Western media as either an oppressed class or a threat to the national identity. Thus, the veil is perceived as a symbol of oppression and in the name of secular liberalism and national security many European countries have adopted policies to control the hijab in the public sphere. However, no such steps have been taken to control religious symbols for men, such as the skull cap or beard.
Restriction on wearing hijab means a restriction of free will for those who choose to abide by traditional Islamic practices. On the other hand, forcing women to wear the garments they do not like to wear is a blatant act of sabotage to their liberty. In Minaret Leila Aboulela presents the life of a Muslim woman who reconstructs religion in her life. Through the depiction of the religious transformation of Najwa, the protagonist of the novel, Aboulela breaks the Western stereotypes of Muslim women. Najwa is not submissive to any man and makes her own choices. She goes to the Mosque and puts on Islamic dress including the hijab of her free will. Her religious transformation brings a new meaning of life to herself. She finds protection, peace and strength in Islam. On the contrary, Azar Nafisi finds political Islam oppressing. She had to leave her job because she did not comply with the Iranian law of head covering. Like Nafisi there are women in the Islamic world who are forced to wear the hijab.
In this seminar we will critically analyze Minaret and Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books and discuss the problems of hindering women from wearing the hijab in the West and forcing them to wear it in the conservative Islamic countries.

The year is 2020 and we still celebrate, regardless of age, the 155 years of The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland, the 120 years of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, over 90 years of Winnie-the-Pooh and centuries or millennia of fables and fairy tales. Young Adult publications have also been catapulted forward in the last two decades, a boom easily exemplified by the commercial success of Harry Potter and other book series.
This course proposes to revisit Children’s Literature classics and an in-depth and critical analysis of texts which made many a childhood. Together, we will outline the development of Children’s Literature from Antiquity to Contemporary times, understand the construction of childhood and the concept of family in various literary texts as well as study the pedagogical functions of fables, fairy tales and children’s stories (including recent Disney renditions). Furthermore, the course will provide an overview of Young Adult Literature and the recent boost the genre has received. Materials will include novels, comic books, graphic novels and film adaptations and the focus will be directed towards political and identity issues in the X-Men comics, and V for Vendetta and the place of these publications in the development of teenagers and young adults.

Inhalt:
This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American Literature. We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of predominantly English literary history.

Please note that all Introductions to English and American Literary Studies prepare students for the analysis and interpretation of both English and American literature. The only difference is that the Introductions taught by members of the English Literature section use literary examples from a primarily British context, and those taught by members of the American Studies section use primarily American examples. Choosing one or the other Introduction does not mean that you specialize in English or American literature, and you don t have to take your later courses in the same area.

Inhalt:
Jane Austen is certainly one of the best-known authors in English literature. Even though she only wrote six complete novels in her short life, Austen has been an audience favourite ever since she published her books in the early 19th century. Her novels have been studied by generations of students and artists of all kinds and each generation both drew on previous interpretations and analyses of her works and added new ones. This course will specifically look at how such interpretations and analyses in all kinds of scholarship and media have shaped and keep re-shaping the popular and academic discouse of Austen. To do so, we will look at her novels and their adaptations in film, TV and online content such as web series or fanfictions. In addition, we will read and analyse some of Austen's unfinished works as well as her minor works and letters to see how she herself participated in the literary discourse of her own time. A special focus will be laid on reception theory to study the effect of audience interpretation and adaptation on the cultural understanding of Austen's writing. Hence, the course material will cover both primary texts (by Austen and by other writers/filmmakers/other artists) and scholarly texts on adaptation, reception theory and discourse formation.

Inhalt:
In this seminar we will study trends and schools in literary theory since the 1950s. We may discuss key texts by thinkers identified with formalism and structuralism, deconstruction and poststructuralism, gender studies and queer theory, psychoanalytical criticism, (Neo)Marxism and Cultural Materialism, New Historicism, postcolonial criticism and reader-response theory.
Depending on the participants personal interests, we may also consider more recent approaches like ecocriticism and possible-worlds theory or less "canonized" theories (e.g. systems theory).

The course is intended to assist students in both finding own approaches towards primary texts and in identifying mind-sets and methods applied in the secondary sources they read in their other seminars: "What theory demonstrates [...] is that there is no position free of theory, not even the one called common sense" (V. B. Leitch).

Inhalt:
This seminar will guide you through the fascinating variety of poetry that emerged from the post-war period and evolved into the diversity of contemporary poetry. We will begin with a short look back to the poetry of modernism (T.S. Eliot) and the political poetry in the 1930s (Auden, Spender, MacNeice). The seminar then starts with Robert Conquest s New Lines introducing us to poets of the 1950s and beyond. The diversity of British poetry is difficult to categorise. There are individual poets such as Philip Larkin, Ted Hughes, Geoffrey Hill, Peter Porter, Thom Gunn, Tony Harrison, and others. Some poets gained a reputation as representatives of the bygone rural England (John Betjeman). Others might be read as poets of a particular region such as Edwin Morgan, Hugh MacDiarmid, John Burnside or Jackie Kay for Scotland, or Dylan Thomas and R.S Thomas for Wales, and John Harris and D.M. Thomas for Cornwall. Recent poets include ethnic minorities and immigrants, i.e. diasporic poetry (Derek Walcott, George Szirtes, Benjamin Zephaniah) and women poets such as Emily Berry, Alice Oswald or Clare Pollard. Reading these poets in class, you will learn a lot about the changing poetic language in the twentieth century, but also about history and politics, society and culture in the United Kingdom throughout a troubled century.

Inhalt:
Quests, pilgrimages, expeditions, sentimental journeys, picaresque and picturesque travels, eco-tourism and travel influencers. Over the past five centuries travelling to and from the British Isles has seen many shapes and fulfilled a range of purposes. This seminar on travel writing sets out to explore some of the facets of this genre that has been variously termed “notoriously refractory to definition” (Holland/Huggan) but also “the most socially important of all literary genres” (Youngs).

How does travelling re-shape our identities? And how does it alter our view of others, of authenticity and the exotic? What are the implications of gender, sexual and ethnic identity for the (fictional) travel experience? Participants will be introduced to the evolving field of tourism studies as well as its intersections with literary studies, to theories of identity, place and space as well as Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism (1978). The texts read in class will range from The Travels of Sir John Mandeville (1350s), Captain James Cook’s Journals, Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey (1768), The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano (1789), Mary Wollstonecraft’s letters from Scandinavia (1796) and Mary Kingsley’s accounts of West Africa to Louise Doughty’s The Stone Cradle (2006) and Bernardine Evaristo’s Soul Tourists (2005).

Inhalt:
In 1976, the British public was struck by two singular verses: “I am an antichrist! / I am an anarchist!”, screamed by a cynical jeering voice of a certain Johnny Rotten, who fronted a group shamelessly called Sex Pistols. The shock provoked both indignation and admiration that soon had an international impact and kick started a new generation of young artists inspired by it under the common denominator of “punk”.

This “punk” denominator was very soon split up into various others: new wave, industrial, goth etc., and its impact seems to resonate throughout pop culture and beyond, even today. Because of its defiant attitude, destructive, yet playful creativity, and fast developing related and post-tendencies around the world, it was soon suggested that punk resembles futurism, dada, situationism or other avant-garde movements and tendencies.

With focus on English- and Italian-speaking cultural areas, this course will provide food for thought and discussions about avant-garde aesthetics, gender, and how they manifest, if they do, in punk and related tendencies in pop culture. While it is a widespread viewpoint that punk is just about the music, the course aims at the portrayal of its literary value, through its lyrics, poetry and later developed fiction with examples from Cyberpunk, Steampunk and Feminist Punk. The possible ethical and political meanings of such expression will also be presented and discussed, since political engagement is one of the central aspects of both the avant-garde and punk.

Students of Italian language and literature will also have separate sessions for analysis of Italian texts in its original language.

Inhalt:
Starting with the Empire Windrush sailing out in 1948 until the beginning of the 21st century, the seminar will focus on the span of over fifty years of postcolonial migration to London. After living and working in London for many years, migrants still feel left on the margins of the British society. Although born and bred in the UK, their children’s sense of belonging is undermined by other Londoners constantly asking: ‘Where are you really from?’ Special emphasis will be given to the questions of diasporic identities, institutional racism manifesting as discriminations that the first and second generations of migrants face in schools and workplaces, police cruelty, underpaid jobs, problems with housing, and differences in culinary traditions and climate. The seminar will discuss how London in urban narratives like The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi, White Teeth by Zadie Smith, Brick Lane by Monica Ali, and The Small Island by Andrea Levy reflects the liminal space between the ‘Englishness’, the migrants’ dreams and disappointment.

This course is an extracurricular course and does not offer any ECTS credits. Anybody interested in reading and discussing Shakespeare is very welcome, regardless of their course of studies.
You need not register for this course, just come along in the first session and bring a copy of the plays.
Inhalt:
William Shakespeare's works are well know, or should be well known, to all students of English literature. However, when reading Shakespeare some people struggle to fully appreciate his language or his brilliantly designed characters. This course aims at all of those students who would like to enjoy Shakespeare's works together with other students. Thus, we will not only read two pieces by Shakespeare, one comedy and one tragedy, we will also provide a platform for discussion or even stage a few scenes to further our understanding of what is going on. If you want to join us, you need not have any previous knowledge, only bring a copy of the play and comfortable shoes.

Inhalt:
The Bloomsbury Group (after the London borough of Bloomsbury) is a term frequently used for a number of writers, painters and critics of the first half of the twentieth century who were also close personal friends. Members of the group included the writers Virginia Woolf and E. M. Forster, the painters Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and Roger Fry, the biographer Lytton Strachey, the social economist John Maynard Keynes and the critics Leonard Woolf and Clive Bell. The aim of this course will be to investigate whether it really makes sense to speak of a “group”, i.e. if, in what way and to what extent the individual artists influenced each other or followed a common aesthetics. In view of the number of members and the huge influence they exerted in their various fields, a treatment of the group’s activities within the limits of one seminar will necessarily be highly selective. Hence, we will concentrate on fiction and painting, that is, the (shared?) artistic principles of the group, and largely ignore the equally intriguing political issues (for instance pacifism and changing gender roles). Students enrolling for this class will be expected to read two longer texts, E. M. Forster’s novel Howards End and Virginia Woolf’s The Waves, as well as a selection of shorter, mostly non-fictional, texts that will be made available in class. Considering the topic of this class, which is concerned with collaboration, mutual criticism and lively interaction, it is essential that students make an effort to attend the seminar regularly. Please note that you must have read Howards End by the second week of term!
