Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge der englischen Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 4 oder 6 ECTS erforderlich sind.

Inhalt:

In contrast to theoretical and empirical linguistics, which both are mainly concerned with the description of language as a system, applied linguistics (AL) investigates language issues in the (idealized) real world. In other words, it aims at describing social phenomena that involve language to a larger or lesser extent and, ideally, provides solutions to language-related problems of any nature.

AL traditionally referred to aspects of second language teaching and learning, but its focus has widened considerably and it has been influenced by neighboring disciplines such as lexicography, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, translation studies or computational linguistics.

While issues regarding language acquisition, such as developing new teaching methodologies and reliable testing mechanisms, still take center stage today, other salient subjects are the linguistically informed development of digital learning environments and further tools (for automatic grammar correction, machine translation or synthetic speech production, for instance), speech therapy, the implications of bi- and multilingualism, language attitudes, analysis of professional communication (medical language, media language, PR language, etc.), language policy and planning (including language oppression and manipulation; cf. the term linguistic imperialism), language loss as well as forensic linguistics (the analysis of linguistic evidence in crime investigations). In this course we will establish an overview of the field by addressing a range of these sub-topics.

Inhalt:

Diese Lehrveranstaltung behandelt die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Lexikologie und Lexikographie, Phonologie, Morphologie und Syntax. Sie vermittelt überblicksartig Grundkenntnisse der Geschichte der englischen Sprache und macht dabei, vor dem Hintergrund der wichtigsten soziohistorischen Ereignisse, die tiefgreifenden Änderungen vom Alt- zum Neuenglischen deutlich.

Inhalt:

The expansion of English in Asia is mainly a consequence of former British colonization. Usage of English in Asia today can be studied as a result of a complex interaction between input varieties (e.g. British English and American English), native languages, general principles of second language acquisition and characteristics of learners (e.g. age, gender, social status, educational background etc.)

This course is an introduction to the different varieties of English in Asia. We will learn about the socio-cultural factors that influence the existence and lead to the emergence of new varieties. Status of English in these countries and attitudes towards English will be discussed. We will mainly focus on English in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Hong Kong and China.

Phonological and grammatical features of these varieties will be analysed. Participants in the seminar will be asked to prepare individual topics and present them in class.

This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master s theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

Inhalt:

This course is concerned with central aspects of phonetics and basic phonological concepts. It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress.

Participants must have passed the Introduction to English Linguistics and English Phonetics & Phonology. They should also have taken (or be taking) part in the course Methods and Theories in Linguistics. The seminar is not suitable for participants who took part in my seminar "Sociolinguistics" (summer term 2016).

Inhalt:

This seminar is intended for students with a strong interest in the topic and not averse to some hands-on empirical work. We will familiarize ourselves with general sociolinguistic theory, focusing on two standard concepts: (i) linguistic variables, i.e. aspects of language that may vary systematically and can become objects of interest in sociolinguistic research, and (ii) socio-stylistic variables that can help explain linguistic variation, for example in terms of speakers’ gender, age, socio-economic background or the contexts in which language is used. Apart from these fundamentals, the class will be concerned with a discussion (and perhaps critique) of key studies in Sociolinguistics, as well as methodological issues. The latter – some of which will be explored in practice – include

• planning a sociolinguistic study (e.g. identifying variables of interest, describing the speech community, developing research questions)
• designing a sociolinguistic study (e.g. developing and using different tools like questionnaires, interviews, reading tasks, etc.)
• data collection
• operationalising / measuring linguistic and social variables
• data analysis and presentation of results

Where appropriate, we will be doing practical work on given datasets in class, in order to acquire data analysis skills, concerning, for example, phonetic analysis, basic statistical methods, the graphical representation of results, etc. Term papers written on the basis of this seminar will at least partially be based on small-scale sociolinguistic studies designed and conducted by particpants.

Inhalt:

Bei der Wahl Ihres Themas im schriftlichen Staatsexamen in Linguistik haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an diesem Repetitorium teilnehmen, um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte sowie des Mittelenglischen (und gegebenenfalls auch des Altenglischen) zu vertiefen. In dieser Übung werden zum einen theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, zum anderen geht es um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen (und altenglischen) Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen. Kursunterlagen werden auf dem "Virtuellen Campus" bereitgestellt. Das Passwort wird zu Vorlesungsbeginn bekanntgegeben. Die mittelenglischen Klausuren bauen immer auf eine stark eingegrenzte Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers auf, speziell aus den Canterbury Tales und aus Troilus and Criseyde, woraus zunächst eine Passage zu übersetzen ist. Daher wird zusätzlich ein Intensivblockkurs Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten (0,7 SWS). Nicht-modularisiert Studierende sind für die Vorbereitung auf ihr Examen in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen, ebenso wie Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte.

Inhalt:

In this seminar we will take a closer look at the internal structure of complex English words that is, word forms that can be divided into meaningful elements. Two branches of linguistics deal with the ways in which such elements are combined: morphology and word-formation. We will look at the morphological architecture of English and explore by which means new words may enter the language. It will become clear that despite the availability of productive word-formation processes new words are rather rare. In this regard, psycholinguistic and corpus linguistic perspectives have added to our understanding of the constraints on morphological creativity.

Among the questions that will be addressed in the course are the following: How creative can speakers be when forming new words and how can we explain constraints on neologisms? How are morphemes and words stored in the mind and how does this impact on observable language use? Do speakers show systematic variation in the use of morphological patterns and, if so, is it possible to explain their behavior? Are certain word-formation processes particularly appealing in special domains of language use, such as information technology and product branding?

Participants will enhance their understanding of central concepts of English morphology and gain insights into how linguists investigate the internal structure of words.

Inhalt:

This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

This advanced seminar starts out from models of World Englishes such as Kachru’s Concentric Circles Model (1985) and Schneider’s Dynamic Model of the evolution of Postcolonial Englishes (2007). We will explore the historical basis for the world-wide expansion of English and the sociolinguistic outcomes in countries where English serves as a first or second language today.
The main focus will be on the morphosyntactic properties of first- and second-language varieties of English. Drawing on the unique interactive online resource eWAVE (The Electronic World Atlas of Varieties of English) and accompanying material (Kortmann & Lunkenheimer 2013), we will portray the sociolinguistic background of selected national varieties of English (e.g. British, Irish, American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, Singaporean, Malaysian, Philippine, Hong Kong, Jamaican, South African, Nigerian, Kenyan and Tanzanian English) and survey nonstandard features specific to or shared by them. The bulk of our work will be devoted to an attempt to substantiate expert assessments of the kind that have entered the eWAVE survey by carrying out our own quantitative research on currently available multivarietal text corpora, in particular the International Corpus of English (ICE) and the corpus of Global Web-based English (GloWbE).
On the theoretical level, we will gain insights into the dynamics of language contact, language change, convergence/divergence, English as a Lingua Franca, globalization, registers of language use, standardization, nativization, identity construction and linguistic universals.
The Übung that accompanies the Seminar (Thursdays, 9:15 – 10:00h, U9/01.03) is designed to discuss oral presentations, research projects and termpapers individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.

Description:
Students intending to attend this course should meet the following three requirements: They should be open to (linguistic) theories, interested in the development of the English language [knowledge of Old or Middle English is no precondition], including recent changes – and they must be willing to discuss critically an attitude towards language such as Tony's. Tony belongs to those of Jean Aitchison's friends "who think that language change should be stopped" (quoted from the dedication to the first edition of her Language Change: Progress or Decay?). Taking the more remote and more recent history of the English language as our source for the data, we shall look at different kinds of language change as both a historical phenomenon and a theoretical challenge. Thus, types and categories of change will be addressed as well as theories on the questions of how linguistic changes begin, how they spread and how they might be explained. The Übung, which accompanies the Hauptseminar (Wednesday, 14:15-15:00 in U9/01.04) is designed to discuss project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided. Description:
The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Aufbaumodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in approaching and handling data, sources of information and technologies. The topics treated will include the retrieval and processing of secondary literature, the composition of linguistic texts, the formatting of handouts and term papers in Word for Windows, the use of online dictionaries and databases, the analysis of linguistic corpora, etc.

Inhalt:

Psycholinguistics explores the relationship between the human mind and language. It can be defined as the study of the mental representations and processes involved in language use (including storage, production and comprehension of spoken as well as written language; cf. Warren 2013: 4). The evidence exploited in psycholinguistic research draws on observations of performance (including errors), experimental designs, neuroimaging techniques and language disorders. In this seminar, the core areas of psycholinguistics will be explored, which are listed here along with some of their central questions:

Storage:

• How is the mental lexicon organized? Are words stored according to their form or their meaning, or both?
• Do phonemes and morphemes correspond to units in the brain? What about complex words and irregular forms?
• How do we store the meaning of a sentence or text in short- and long-term memory?

Production:

• Which stages are involved in the conversion of a message into an utterance?
• How do we find appropriate words and syntactic structures?
• How much of the production process is shared by speaking and writing?
• Are the pathways of the production process also involved in perception?

Perception:

• Which factors influence our recognition of words when we hear or read them?
• Does reading necessarily involve access to the sounds of words?
• What can we learn from processing problems caused by certain syntactic structures?
• How do we integrate the meaning that we decode with our mental representation of the text and with our world knowledge?

Based on reading assignments and oral presentations, participants in the seminar will gain an overview of the general consensus as well as of currently debated issues in the field.

Die Lehrveranstaltung dient der Vorbereitung auf die wissenschaftliche Klausur nach LPO I §64 (3) 1b "Aufgabe aus der Sprachwissenschaft - Linguistik synchron" für das Lehramt an Gymnasien.

Auf der Basis des bayerischen Lektürekanons zur englischen Sprachwissenschaft und weiterer Texte sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse relevanter Teilbereiche (Teil A: Phonetik und Phonologie/Syntax/Text- und Stilanalyse/Lexikologie, Morphologie und Phraseologie; Teil B: Variation und Wandel) wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft werden. Es werden zentrale Texte des Lektürekanons sowie ausgewählte Aufgaben aus früheren Klausuren besprochen.

Inhalt:

Description: Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any – in fact only eight – inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related – as they obviously are, when we compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7^th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced, and special areas of interest are the development of sounds and spelling, grammar, vocabulary and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS). Students from other BA programmes can earn 2 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2 or 4 ungraded, pass/fail or graded ECTS points. Everybody elso who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without getting ECTS points.
Note that students of Lehramt Gymnasium and of B.A. Medieval Studies in their Basismodul must attend the Uebung "Englische Sprachgeschichte", not this lecture.

Inhalt:

This seminar will introduce you to corpus linguistics and its application in the research of genderlects and representation of gender in language. Its aim is to explore and empirically challenge prevalent stereotypes surrounding gender. In the course of this seminar, we’ll review existing studies on this topic and try to retrace the steps involved. Further topics include the relevance of empirical evidence in linguistics in general and the effects of language on our cognition.
