Modulanbindungen:
Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge der englischen Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 3, 4 oder 6 ECTS erforderlich sind.
- Inhalt:
- The seminar will introduce students to the field of contrastive linguistics. We will first discuss the aims, methods and subject-matter of contrastive linguistics, and basic notions such as equivalence, interference, interlanguage will be dealt with. Later on, selected aspects of English and German on different linguistic levels (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, lexis) will be analysed and compared in more detail. Whenever possible, it is intended to discuss the relevance of contrastive linguistics for foreign language learning.

- Inhalt:
- This interdisciplinary seminar is aimed at students who are planning to embark on a career in (or related to) English Language Teaching, exploring the contribution that empirical linguistic research makes to the formation of future teachers as well as to their everyday working lives. The empirical discipline known as Corpus Linguistics makes systematic use of digital text collections and has developed into the pet method employed by an ever-increasing community of researchers. Corpus-based insights have been incorporated in modern dictionaries, grammars, teaching materials and syllabi. What is more, for language teachers and learners many corpora are no more than a click away, but their potential for English Language Teaching is only beginning to be recognized.
In this seminar we will explore the many direct applications that corpus analyses have in and around the English classroom. Students will be enabled to conduct their own research on selected topics from the areas of vocabulary, grammar, style and register, varieties and language change, but discussion will not stop there. We will highlight the relevance of patterns found in the corpora for teachers' (and learners') metalinguistic awareness, teaching content and methods, assessment of teaching materials, correction of learner errors, and creation of advanced learner projects.
Students can obtain credit points either in English Linguistics or in English Language Teaching (Fachdidaktik). According to their choice, they register for this seminar in the respective area in FlexNow. Students obtaining credits for English Language Teaching and those obtaining credits for English Linguistics will be expected to collaborate on joint projects.

- This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master s theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

- Bei der Wahl Ihres Themas im schriftlichen Staatsexamen in Linguistik haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig.
Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an diesem Repetitorium teilnehmen, um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte und des Mittelenglischen (gegebenenfalls auch des Altenglischen) zu vertiefen. In dieser Übung werden zum einen theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, zum anderen geht es um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen (und altenglischen) Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre.
Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen. Die mittelenglischen Klausuren bauen immer auf eine stark eingegrenzte Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers auf, speziell aus den Canterbury Tales und aus Troilus and Criseyde, woraus zunächst eine Passage zu übersetzen ist. Daher wird zusätzlich ein Intensivblockkurs Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten (0,7 SWS).
Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte sind in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen.

- Inhalt:
- In this seminar we will take a closer look at the internal structure of complex English words that is, word forms that can be divided into meaningful elements. Two branches of linguistics deal with the ways in which such elements are combined: morphology and word-formation. We will look at the morphological architecture of English and explore by which means new words may enter the language. It will become clear that despite the availability of productive word-formation processes new words are rather rare. In this regard, psycholinguistic and corpus linguistic perspectives have added to our understanding of the constraints on morphological creativity.
Among the questions that will be addressed in the course are the following: How creative can speakers be when forming new words and how can we explain constraints on neologisms? How are morphemes and words stored in the mind and how does this impact on observable language use? Do speakers show systematic variation in the use of morphological patterns and, if so, is it possible to explain their behavior? Are certain word-formation processes particularly appealing in special domains of language use, such as information technology and product branding?
Participants will enhance their understanding of central concepts of English morphology and gain insights into how linguists investigate the internal structure of words.

- Inhalt:
- This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

Although the focus of this seminar will naturally be on the English language, we will explore recurrent patterns in the evolution of other languages, too. We will look at most core domains of linguistics, i.e. phonology, semantics, syntax, morphology and discourse-pragmatics. In the process, we will treat cognitive and social motivations for change. Topics to be discussed include the GOING-TO future as well as related future constructions in the Romance or other languages. Students attending this seminar must be willing to do regular reading assignments and give a short presentation (including a handout, prepared in co-operation with another student).

- In contrast to theoretical and empirical linguistics, which both are mainly concerned with the description of language as a system, applied linguistics investigates language issues in the (idealized) real world. In other words, it aims at describing social phenomena that involve language to a larger or lesser extent and, ideally, provides solutions to (or at least advice on) language-related problems of any nature.
Applied linguistics traditionally referred to aspects of second language teaching and learning, but its focus has widened considerably and it has been influenced by neighboring disciplines such as lexicography, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, translation studies or computational linguistics.
While aspects regarding language acquisition, such as developing new teaching methodologies and reliable testing mechanisms, still take center stage today, other salient subjects are the linguistically informed development of digital learning environments and further tools (for automatic grammar correction, machine translation or synthetic speech production, for instance), speech therapy, the implications of bi- and multilingualism, language attitudes, analysis of professional communication (medical language, PR language, the language of aviation, etc.), language policy and planning (including language oppression and manipulation; cf. the term "linguistic imperialism"), language loss and maintenance, as well as forensic linguistics, i.e. the analysis of linguistic evidence in crime investigations. This lecture series will establish an overview of the field by addressing a broad range of these sub-topics and will include a number of guest lectures by specialists in their respective domains.

The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Ergänzungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in using specific sources of information and technologies as well as in collecting, analysing and visualizing their own empirical data. The topics treated will include aspects of academic writing (handling secondary literature, referencing), the analysis of linguistic corpora and other databases, the use of online dictionaries, the construction of questionnaires, the analysis of audio-recorded data, the interpretation of experiments, etc.

4. Prerequisite of the course:
The course requires students to have a sound knowledge of articulatory phonetics aswell as the ability to give a complete phonetic description of speech sounds in English.

- Inhalt:
- This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of analysis in phonology. It aims at acquainting students with the principles and method of phonological analysis in English. It has a threefold objective: to describe, analyze and formalize phonological processes in Present-Day English as well as in prior stages of the language (OE, ME, ModE).
1. The description will consist in identifying and explaining any process induced by the combination of sounds and forms in English (aspiration, assimilation, morphophonological processes, etc.). It is a well-known fact that sounds behave differently and are affected by change when they are combined with other sounds. Students will be familiarized with some sound combinatory processes in English (nasalization, palatalization, velarization,etc.) and phonetic transcription (broad and narrow).
2. The analysis of the phonological process will take the form of feature notation to represent phonemes, which implies that each segment should be analyzed down to its smallest components based on the feature matrices of English. This will give a clear picture of interactions inside and between segments' features.
3. Formalization consists in using simplified feature notation to characterize general phonological processes in English. Students will learn to describe any phonological process that they can observe in English and in other languages.

The quantitative focus of phonetics and the qualitative focus of phonology
- The syllable structure and the phonotactic constraints in English
- Derivation accounting for syllabification of words in English
- The stress patterns in English, etc.

- This workshop is offered to any teachers from the Sprachenzentrum who are looking for ways to enrich their classes with authentic language material, to confirm (or adjust) their intuition with recourse to objective facts of usage and to enable students to develop their own text production skills, language awareness and autonomy in handling linguistic questions. Insights based on corpora (large digital text collections) have been incorporated in modern dictionaries, grammars, textbooks and teaching materials. For language teachers and learners, many corpora are no more than a click away.
In this session, led by Prof. Dr. Julia Schlüter of the Chair of English Linguistics, we will explore the potential of corpora applied to advanced practical English language courses. Participants will carry out their own corpus queries focusing on selected topics from the areas of vocabulary, grammar, register and varieties of English.
Teachers of languages other than English are very welcome, however the corpus tools used in the workshop are English-based.
Applications will include:
- uses of corpora for planning lessons
- classroom activities drawn from naturally occurring current language samples
- using corpus tools in student-centred learning
- collecting information on issues of disputed usage

- Every day we come into contact with language in dozens of situations. Whether we have an informal conversation with a friend, listen to the radio, read or write text messages or pieces of academic writing, we naturally and automatically adapt our language and our expectations to the situation and choose words and structures accordingly. In linguistics we refer to such language varieties that are associated with a specific situation of use as a register. The study of registers is therefore the attempt to systematically describe how and why language use differs in various situations.

- Unparalleled by any other language, English has spread all around the globe, constituting a decisive force in and product of globalization alike. Most various geographical and social contexts have led to a global diversification of English with new local varieties emerging in situations of language contact and change. At the same time, speakers from different linguacultural backgrounds use English as a shared lingua franca, adapting the language to meet individual situational demands.
This seminar will address questions surrounding the use of English as a global language: Which factors have contributed to the worldwide spread of English? How does English interact with other languages? What characterizes individual varieties of English? How do speakers employ English in lingua franca interactions to secure communicative success? Which attitudes accompany the use of English as a global language? And how does a conceptualization of English as a global language affect English learning and teaching?
The course introduces major methods and findings in the field of English as a global language and discusses didactic implications. Participants will not only explore the English language as employed in various settings, but also reflect on their own use of and attitudes towards English as a global language.

- Die Lehrveranstaltung dient der Vorbereitung auf die wissenschaftliche Klausur nach LPO I §64 (3) 1b "Aufgabe aus der Sprachwissenschaft - Linguistik synchron" für das Lehramt an Gymnasien.
Auf der Basis des bayerischen Lektürekanons zur englischen Sprachwissenschaft und weiterer Texte sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse relevanter Teilbereiche (Teil A: Phonetik und Phonologie/Syntax/Text- und Stilanalyse/Lexikologie, Morphologie und Phraseologie; Teil B: Variation und Wandel) wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft werden. Es werden zentrale Texte des Lektürekanons sowie ausgewählte Aufgaben aus früheren Klausuren besprochen.

Die Veranstaltung kann für Studierende des Bachelorstudiengangs "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" als Vorlesung (2 ECTS) für das Aufbaumodul eingebracht werden. In diesem Fall muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung, wie auch die FlexNow-Prüfungsanmeldung über den FlexNow-Zugang "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" erfolgen.

- Description:
Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any in fact only eight inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related as they obviously are, when we compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced, and special areas of interest are the development of sounds and spelling, grammar, vocabulary and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS). Students from other BA programmes can earn 2 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2 or 4 ungraded, pass/fail or graded ECTS points. Everybody else who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without ECTS points.
Note that students of Lehramt Gymnasium and of B.A. Medieval Studies in their Basismodul must attend the Uebung "Englische Sprachgeschichte", not this lecture.

Insbesondere in der zweiten Semesterhälfte bereitet der Kurs durch Version und Besprechung ehemaliger Prüfungstexte intensiv auf die Übersetzungsklausur im Staatsexamen vor.

Die Veranstaltung kann für Studierende des Bachelorstudiengangs Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft als Seminar (6 ECTS) für das Aufbaumodul 1 Sprache und Gesellschaft eingebracht werden. In diesem Fall muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung, wie auch die FlexNow-Prüfungsanmeldung über den FlexNow-Zugang "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" erfolgen.
- Inhalt:
- The language of pop cultural artifacts, and especially the language of (fictional) film and television, collectively labelled "telecinematic discourse", has increasingly attracted scholarly attention on part of linguists. Researchers have recognized that telecinematic texts are an important representation of our world, potentially also impacting on social realities. In addition, it has emerged that studies of relevant texts have to account for specific production and consumption constraints. Accordingly, telecinematic discourse cannot be viewed as a poor or deteriorated version of "real" conversation, but rather represents carefully manipulated language with the aim to achieve certain comic or dramatic effects. Further, telecinematic discourse has also been studied from a more critical angle, for instance to determine whether and how gender and ethnic stereotypes are purported. All this makes pertinent textual varieties worth studying in their own right.
To deal with the aforementioned issues, this class is conceptualized as "scholarship-in-action" and will often rely on analyses of concrete telecinematic material. In passing, central linguistic terminology and research areas that have considered telecinematic discourse (e.g. pragmatics, sociolinguistics, stylistics, etc.) will be revisited and recently established linguistic resources, such as the Movie Corpus (https://www.english-corpora.org/movies/), will be introduced. Due to the nature of the artifacts studied, related topics such as multimodality and the use of telecinematic discourse as a resource in language education will also be tackled.

- Dieser Workshop bereitet Sie gezielt auf das Staatsexamen Linguistik synchron (LA Gymnasium) vor und sollte direkt vor dem Examen, also im gleichen Semester, belegt werden. In der ersten Sitzung erhalten Sie praktische Tipps für die schriftliche Prüfung. Zudem haben Sie die Gelegenheit, sich intensiv auf den A-Teil vorzubereiten. Zu den klassischen Prüfungsaufgaben (Transkription, Satzanalyse, morphologische Analyse) erhalten Sie individuelles Feedback bezüglich Form und Inhalt. In der zweiten Sitzung schreiben Sie eine Probeklausur (A- und B-Teil), die Sie etwa eine Woche später im Einzelgespräch zurückbekommen.

- Der Workshop richtet sich an Lehramtsstudierende, die nach diesem Semester ihr Staatsexamen in Englisch ablegen wollen. Neben Strategien zur Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Übersetzungsklausur im Staatsexamen wird der Workshop Gelegenheit zur Erweiterung des prüfungsrelevanten Wortschatzes und zur vertieften Beschäftigung mit syntaktischen Fehlerschwerpunkten bieten. Anhand von praktischen Beispielen aus vergangenen Prüfungen soll erarbeitet werden, was eine gelungene Übersetzung ausmacht. Die Teilnehmenden können individuelle Beratungen zur Prüfungsvorbereitung auf der Grundlage einer Probeklausur in Anspruch nehmen.
