Inhalt:
Description: The two major national varieties of English differ in many more ways than most of us are aware of. Usually, phonological, orthographic and lexical differences receive most attention. Going beyond that, the seminar will focus on the grammatical level, where we can find a considerable number of contrasts if we look closely enough and pay due attention to quantitative differences in the use of variant structures.

Thanks to the availability of large digital text collections (linguistic corpora), research has unearthed contrasts ranging from lexical and grammatical morphology to word order and syntactic constructions. Thus, the seminar will foreground a selection of recent, mostly corpus-based studies of British-American divergences and encourage students to carry out their own follow-up research. We will also evaluate system-inherent orientations that have been proposed to account for variety-specific tendencies. This is why the historical dimension of the contrasts will regularly be included.

Last not least, we will consider implications of differences between the standard reference varieties for the learning and use of English in countries where it is taught as a foreign language or used as a lingua franca. Thus, students heading for teaching professions will be asked to evaluate the information that can be found in English course books.

The Übung that accompanies the Seminar (Wednesdays, 2:00 – 2:45 pm, U9/01.03) is designed to discuss oral presentations, handouts and termpaper projects individually and/or in small groups. Special arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.

5. Combination with "Methods and Theories in Linguistics":
In the early weeks of term, all students are expected to take part in a special introduction to research methods entitled "Methods and Theories in Linguistics": https://univis.uni-bamberg.de/form?dsc=anew/lecture_view&lvs=guk/angl/engls/method&anonymous=1&founds=guk/angl/engls/method&sem=2022s&codeset=utf8 (unless they have already participated in this course in an earlier semester). Thus, these participants are required to reserve the following times and dates: Monday, 2 May 2022, 8-10am, Thursday, 12 May 2022, 8-11am, and Friday, 13 May 2022, 8-11 am. To enable pre-planning, please register for the course in FlexNow and in the Virtual Campus course by 28th April at the latest: https://vc.uni-bamberg.de/course/view.php?id=52669
Inhalt:
Description:
'Fixed' expressions, idioms, formulaic language, patterns, constructions: how much of the language that we use is 'new', how much is 'pre-fabricated', that is, governed by 'fixation' in one way or another? How can we describe this kind of lexical fixation, for instance, in idioms such as to sleep like a log, Happy Birthday!, in next to no time, of course, face to face and A friend in need is a friend indeed? And how can we account for idioms with lexical variation and those which are not syntactically well-formed, both of which can be demonstrated by the idiom to trip/dance/tread the light fantastic? And in how far do fixed syntactic patterns which are lexically free, as for instance noun-preposition-noun constructions such as grandfather after grandfather (entered the room), differ from idioms? In which way does this 'fixation' influence our language use (both productive and receptive), and also language development? Which role does frequency of use play in these matters? What is the importance of this topic for teaching English as a foreign language? In order to approach first answers to a selection of these questions we will explore fixation in language on the basis of current studies on idioms (and phraseology in general) as well as on constructions. Among topics that we will discuss are:
  • idiom classification
  • comparison between constructions and idioms
  • the functional and stylistic potential of idioms
  • cognitive and psycholinguistic approaches to 'formulaic language'
  • learning (about) idioms and constructions in a foreign language
  • exploring idioms and constructions by means of corpus linguistics
  • the development of idioms and constructions in the history of English
  • And, last but not least, the seminar will also quite practically enhance students' knowledge of English idioms.

The Übung which accompanies the seminar (Wednesday, 14:15-15:00) is designed for discussions of project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.

Anforderungen: Regelmäßige Lektüre, Bearbeitung von Übungsblättern, Teilnahme an Tutorat und Workshops, Abschlussklausur.
Inhalt:
This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

Inhalt:
Almost three decades ago many experts believed that this thing called 'internet' will never catch on. Boy, were they wrong.

The internet has revolutionized, or at least changed, many aspects of our lives. It has become the norm that we can instantaneously get in touch and exchange information with people from all over the globe. This instant connectedness has super-charged the speed at which our world changes - and with it the way we use language.

We write e-mails instead of letters, we use instant messaging to stay in touch with our friends and family, we use emojis and memes, companies and politicians present themselves on social media, we talk to chatbots and AIs, we use vidcalls for online teaching, we exchange experiences and knowledge in online forums, we look for partners on online dating networks, we document and share our travel experiences on blogs and vlogs, we explore and compete in virtual worlds and games and we consume podcasts.

In this seminar, we will explore the peculiarities of some (the internet is vast) of these new forms of communication from a linguistic perspective.

Participation in this Übung is recommended for anyone with a strong interest in Linguistics. For those BA students planning on doing their Ergänzungsmodul in Linguistics, for all students doing Lehramt Gymnasium and for all MA students, the course is obligatory at a certain point in their studies, so it is recommended to do it as early as possible. These participants are required to reserve the following times and dates: Monday, 2 May 2022, 8-10am, Thursday, 12 May 2022, 8-11am, and Friday, 13 May 2022, 8-11 am. Inhalt:
Journalistic media are an everyday resource, providing information about events outside of our immediate horizon of experience. Hence journalism is regarded as the most important textual system of modernity. This course approaches journalism from a linguistic perspective to explore what exactly the features of this textual system are. Throughout the semester we will contrast the compositional structure of different journalistic genres (e.g. news, feature, interview, and commentary), and discuss how their communicative modes differ depending on the publishing context. We will illustrate how journalistic language differs between various newspapers (e.g. the THE GUARDIAN or THE SUN), and how communication is shaped by technological variables, if we compare print to broadcast or online journalism. In order to explore these aspects hands-on, this course will familiarize students with qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis (such as (critical) discourse analysis and register analysis), and will introduce them to relevant broader concepts (such as audience design, multimodality, and general principles and features of written and spoken communication).

Inhalt:

Inhalt:
Textlinguistics is a branch of linguistics that takes the text as unit of analysis. Commonly viewed as part of the broader domain of discourse analysis, it goes beyond traditional structural levels of analysis as represented by phonology, morphology, syntax, etc. and considers texts as communicative systems.

A list of central issues addressed by textlinguistics may comprise:

  • Definitions: What is a text?
  • Cohesion: How do parts of texts belong together linguistically?
  • Coherence: How do readers make sense of texts?
  • Text typology: How can we classify texts into distinctive categories?
  • Mode: In which respects are texts in different modes (esp. written vs. spoken) linguistically different from each other?
  • Applied textlinguistics and interdisciplinary aspects: How can we use insights from textlinguistics in domains such as literary analysis, translation studies, intercultural communication or language education?

The seminar aims to address these guiding questions both from theoretical and practical perspectives, will problematize the status of hybrid (e.g. digital and written-to-be spoken, written-to-be-sung, etc.) texts and will consider the particular role of contextual factors. To this end, it will further touch upon neighboring areas such as stylistics and register studies and will highlight methods and approaches used in textlinguistic research.

Inhalt:
Description:
Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms, like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any, in fact only eight, inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related, as they obviously are --- just compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced. Special areas of interest are the development of the vocabulary, sounds and spelling, morphology and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS). Students from other BA programmes can earn 2 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2 or 4 ungraded (pass/fail ) or graded ECTS points. Everybody else who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without ECTS points.
Note that students of Lehramt Gymnasium and of B.A. Medieval Studies in their Basismodul must attend the Uebung "Englische Sprachgeschichte", not this lecture.

Number of participants: max 15

Multiple registrations for equivalent courses lead to the loss of the claim to a place! This does not apply to the waiting list.
For students transferring to the University of Bamberg, for Erasmus students and for those who need the credits to register for their upcoming final exams, a few places will be reserved. If the course is fully booked, please contact Carina Großmann personally.

Requirements for credits:
2 ECTS in Master’s Thesis Module: regular active participation in class
2 ECTS in other modules: regular active participation in class + oral presentation (30 min)
4 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation (45 min)
6 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + written exam (90 min)
3/4/6 ECTS (in combination with the course Methods and Theories, 1 ECTS, for BA Ergänzungsmodul): regular active participation in class + oral presentation + oral exam (20 min)

Suitability for modules:
This course is suitable for all degree courses involving English Linguistics (Lehramt, BA, etc.) where 2, 3, 4 or 6 ECTS are required.
Students enrolled in the MA English and American Studies can take part in this course, but they can only get it credited as part of the Master’s Thesis Module in Linguistics ("Betreuungsübung für Masterarbeiten" = "Master's Thesis Supervision"). That means, it will not count towards your Master Module, Consolidation Module or Profile Module.

Combination with "Methods and Theories in Linguistics":
In the early weeks of term, we offer an introductory block familiarizing students with linguistic research methods (the Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics"): https://univis.uni-bamberg.de/form?dsc=anew/lecture_view&lvs=guk/angl/engls/method&anonymous=1&founds=guk/angl/engls/method&sem=2022s&codeset=utf8. Inhalt:
Do you sometimes wonder whether an expression you have heard or read is actually appropriate to use in a certain context? Do you regularly rack your brains for a good way of expressing your ideas in an essay or term paper? Do people sometimes ask you to proofread their texts but you find it hard to judge their language? Are you considering a career in teaching English but feel daunted by the prospect of corrections piling up on your desk? Know-how of the right digital resources can help you with these tasks.

This practical course aims to enable participants to use corpus tools to assess their own and other writers' text production. Corpora are digital text collections representative of one or more than one regional variety, genre and text type, which can be accessed through various interfaces, many of them freely available online. Corpus skills put users in a position to check whether a certain word, collocation or syntactic structure conforms to the norms of competent language users, and they provide insights into what these norms are (in terms of registers and regional varieties). Participants will build up their competence as corpus users, developing simple and complex corpus searches and critically monitoring query results and numerical output. We will also explore ready-made corpus-based tools designed to help with (academic) writing tasks.

COVID-19 permitting, we will exploit the LanguageLLab (LU19/00.09) and its new array of tablet devices to experience a realistic digital classroom setting. The outcome will be evaluated and compared to the outcomes of comparable courses documented in the literature on (advanced) English language teaching.

Inhalt:
This lecture aims to provide a broad overview of the phenomenon of variation, which is a central property of English (and actually all natural languages). In the course of the lecture, we will consider different types of variation at various levels of analysis (orthography, phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, etc.) and will look at various dimensions of variation, such as mode/medium (e.g. written vs. spoken language), region (e.g. traditional regional dialects and postcolonial varieties) as well as social (e.g. gender, age, education, profession) and stylistic factors. In addition, attitudes toward variation and related issues such as standardization will be discussed.

Inhalt:
It is estimated that at the time of Elizabeth I (1533-1603) there were at most seven million native speakers of English, all of whom lived in the British Isles, whereas today there are approximately 350 million native speakers in different parts of the world. But apart from being used as a native language in countries such as in Great Britain, Ireland, the USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, English is also employed in many other forms and functions around the globe, namely as a second language (e.g. India, Nigeria) or as a foreign language (e.g. Germany, Japan). The seminar will therefore be concerned with varieties of English from a global perspective. We will discuss the characteristic features of these varieties in terms of their pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and spelling. Moreover, it is intended to explore the principles that underlie the variation of English in different areas. Our objective will be to show how the varieties of English have developed and what factors have influenced the divergence of English in general.
