Inhalt:

Die Road 90 – mit ihren 480 Kilometern ist sie nicht nur die längste Nationalstraße Israels, sondern auch die Lebensader der Region. Wer hier unterwegs ist, kann im sogenannten Hinterhof des Heiligen Landes wohl am besten erfahren, was die Menschen mit ihrer Heimat verbindet. Die Landschaften entlang der Strecke sind atemberaubend und so vielfältig wie die Lebenswelten der Menschen: von Avi und seiner »Knaipe« irgendwo im Nirgendwo über Aussteiger im eigenen Land, kreative Kibbuzniks und traditionelle Beduinen bis hin zu Gidi, der die Taufe im Jordan zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis macht. Eines haben alle Menschen entlang der Road 90 gemeinsam: Sie lieben das Leben und kämpfen um ihr Dasein. Zwischen alten Konflikten und neuen Herausforderungen sind sie auf der Suche nach Zusammenhalt und Selbstbestimmung. Nicola Albrecht nimmt uns mit auf eine einzigartige, sehr persönliche Reise zu Menschen, die sie willkommen geheißen haben – mal mit »Schalom«, mal mit »Salam«.

Dr. Nicola Albrecht (Jahrgang 1975) hat Komparatistik, Kunstgeschichte und Anglistik in Bonn studiert (bei Profs. Franz-Josef Albersmeier, Dieter Mehl, Justus Müller-Hofstede) und ihr Studium mit der Promotion in Komparatistik (Prof. Albersmeier) abgeschlossen. 2001 kam sie als Trainee zum ZDF. Die Zuschauer lernten sie zunächst als Kriegs- und Krisenreporterin u. a. im Arabischen Frühling kennen. Von 2011 bis 2014 berichtete sie als Korrespondentin aus Peking. Danach übernahm sie für sechs Jahre die Leitung des ZDF-Studios in Tel Aviv und berichtete über den Nahen Osten. Derzeit leitet sie das ZDF-Studio in Potsdam. Die Road 90 hat sie mehrfach bereist und einen Film darüber gedreht.

‘[T]o define true madness, / What is ’t but to be nothing else but mad?’ As Polonius, the would-be sage of Shakespeare’s Hamlet (1609) recognized, the true nature of mental illness is one of human society’s least fathomable riddles. By the early twentieth century, the asylum gates were rattling in strange new ways, even as the mystery remained essentially as intractable as ever. The development of modern psychiatry in the 1870s had challenged old models of disease classification; the fin-de-siècle emergence of psychoanalysis was drawing into question our innate morality and rationality; and a relentless process of urbanization seemed to be intensifying symptoms of such ‘modern’ disorders as schizophrenia and neurasthenia.

We start with a theoretical introduction to mental illness in modern literature on the basis of Michel Foucault’s History of Madness (1961). Our literary explorations will begin with a selection of Stevie Smith’s poems of mental illness. Virginia Woolf’s celebrated novel, Mrs Dalloway (1925) was not only one of the first literary texts to sound out the reverberations of shellshock in the years following the Great War, but also a searing critique of contemporary social attitudes towards mental illness. Samuel Beckett’s stage masterpiece, Waiting for Godot (1952), in turn, is an absurdist reflection of the madness of modernity itself in the wake of World War II. We then move into the 1960s, which saw a proliferation of literary treatments of mental illness. After discussing Doris Lessing’s devastating portrayal of female depression in her story ‘To Room 19’ (1963), we will read Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea of 1966: a subversive twist on Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, which probes the problematic relationship between colonialism, racial politics, and the exploitation of ‘madness’ as a clinical and social label. Finally, we close with a selection from A. S. Byatt’s 1987 collection, Sugar and Other Stories, including ‘The July Ghost’, a poignant reflection on the delicate links between mourning, loss, and mental illness.

Inhalt:

The Thirty-Nine Steps, As You Like It, and The Innocents. What do these movies have in common? They're all quite old and they all continue to enjoy substantial popularity. They will stand the test of time and will therefore be considered as film classics. In this seminar you will be introduced to British film classics which were produced between 1944 and 1985. Upon completion of this course, you will have developed a broader knowledge of these movies. You will also develop greater skills in the use of video for the purposes of teaching and presentation.

The spectacle of Brexit, the eccentricity of Boris Johnson, heated debates in the House of Commons: these are just a few examples of how British politics seems to be marked by a performative quality largely absent from the more sober and solemn workings of the German political system.

In this seminar, we are going to examine British performances of politics in both fiction and real life . We are going to look at specific examples of staging politics, and we will try to understand the reasons behind a theatrical bent that seems to put style over substance.

Preliminary content includes:

• Performative approaches to culture and politics.
• The British political system.
• The parliamentary tradition, the constitutional monarchy, and the unwritten constitution
• The Shakespearian political imaginary and the concept of the “good ruler”.
• Arthurian romance and its renaissance in the 19th century.
• The links between empiricism, “playful detachment” and “national character”.
• The tension between exceptionalism and declinism.
• The Royal Family as spectacle of the state.
• The rhetoric of Winston Churchill.
• The “Cambridge Five”: spy fiction and the performance of left-wing politics.
• Margaret Thatcher: style, vision, and the performance of neoliberal politics.
• New Labour, Cool Britannia – spin and delivery? Performing class and community in Tony Blair’s 1990s.
• Brexit and recent controversies.

Within these topics we will not only consider actual politics but also trace performances of politics in engaging works of literature and popular filmic representations of British politics such as The Crown (Netflix, 2016- ), House of Cards (British original, BBC, 1990), The Thick of It (BBC, 2005-2012), Yes Minister/Yes, Prime Minister (BBC, 1980-1984/1986-1988), Spitting Image (ITV, 1984-1996) and Brexit: The Uncivil War (Toby Haynes, 2019).

In his landmark study of science fiction, Archaeologies of the Future (2007), the Marxist critic Fredric Jameson argued that the paradox of Utopia lies in the fact that it can never truly be represented. As a literal ‘no place’, it remains positively unimaginable from the damaged perspective of the present. Still, writers have never stopped trying – and as the twentieth century lurched through two world wars, it was utopia’s apparent opposite which came to exert a far stronger imaginative grip. Even after a turn away from optimistic projections in space and time, the distinction between ‘utopia’ and ‘dystopia’ has remained a profoundly ambiguous one; and as many have argued, their literary portrayals often tell us far more about the present than any supposed ‘future’.

This seminar takes these theoretical premises as a starting point for an exploration of various utopias, dystopias, and ‘other places’ in both English and German. We begin with Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932), a satire of consumption and capitalism, which suggests that Western society’s dreams and nightmares are closer to one another than we might think. We then turn to The Drowned World by J. G. Ballard (1962), the story of a post-apocalyptic Earth transformed beyond recognition by global warming. Following this, we will discuss either Iain M. Banks’s The Player of Games (1988) or Jeanette Winterson’s The Stone Gods (2007). While the former takes us on an intergalactic journey to ‘the Culture’, a liberal techno-utopia, the latter is a dystopian meditation on humankind’s tendency to repeat the same fatal mistakes time and again. Andreas Eschbach’s Die Haarteppichknüpfer (1995) has us reflect on the nature of work, and its relation to ‘life’, through the lens of a radically different universe, an entirely ‘other’ place. And finally, Dietmar Dath’s epic political allegory, Die Abschaffung der Arten (2008), takes us forward in time to a world in which our own species is virtually extinct – and the kingdom of animals do battle against alien forms of AI.

Die als „Schlegel/Tieck“ bekannt gewordene Übersetzung sämtlicher Dramen William Shake¬speares – sie wurde 1797 von August Wilhelm Schlegel begonnen und in den 1820er Jahren von Ludwig Tieck, seiner Tochter Dorothea und Wolf Heinrich von Baudissin fortgeführt – ist zu einem klassischen Text der deutschen Literatur geworden. Die Tagung und das anschließende Kompaktseminar möchte eine Neubewertung dieser Übertragungen vornehmen, indem sie nach ihren Kontexten fragt: nach den Bedingungen, der Theorie und der Praxis des Übersetzens, nach der Bedeutung innerhalb des frühromantischen Programms sowie nach dem Konzept einer „romantisch-poetischen“ Übersetzung. Außerdem werden die Unterschiede in den Verfahren August Wilhelm Schlegels bzw. des Tieck-Kreises, schließlich die intensive Rezeption bis in die Gegenwart vorgestellt und diskutiert; auch soll es um die Frage gehen, wie der „Schlegel/Tieck“ heute am sinnvollsten historisch-kritisch ediert werden kann, welche Anforderungen dabei zu beachten sind und welche digitalen Verfahren bei einer solchen dringend notwendigen Edition zum Einsatz kommen müssen. Konferenzsprache ist Deutsch.

Die Übung/das Kolloquium wendet sich vornehmlich an Studierende der Britischen Kultur in höheren Semestern. Es versteht sich als offenes wissenschaftliches Forum, in dem B.A.- und M.A.-Arbeiten, Magisterarbeiten, Dissertationen oder andere kulturwissenschaftlich relevante Projekte auch unter Beteiligung von Gästen zur Diskussion stehen. Zugleich bietet dieses Forum auch die Möglichkeit, eher formal orientierte Fragestellungen der Praxis zu diskutieren (z. B. Präsentationsformen bei Vorträgen/Referaten, Redaktion von Texten).

Zudem werden berufsorientierte Veranstaltungen durchgeführt, die den Studierenden Einblick in verschiedene Berufsmöglichkeiten geben sollen.

Inhalte für Vertiefungsmodul: ein Spezialgebiet. In diesem Modul werden die Kenntnisse einer weiteren Epoche bzw. einer weiteren kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellung vermittelt, die mit eigener regelmäßiger Lektüre begleitet wird. Zudem werden berufsrelevante Schlüsselqualifikationen (z.B. Präsentations- und Kommunikationstechniken) ausdifferenziert und vertieft. Mündliche und schriftliche Präsentation eigener Ergebnisse wird eingeübt.

The colloquium is intended primarily for advanced students of British culture. It is to be understood as an open academic forum in which B.A. and M.A. essays, Magister and other dissertations, or other projects in the realm of cultural studies, can be discussed in the presence of participating guests. At the same time, this forum offers the opportunity to discuss more formal questions of academic practice (e.g. presentational methods for lectures and presentations, composition of texts).

In addition, sessions will be organized with a more vocational orientation, intended to give the students insight into various professional possibilities.

Contents ("Vertiefungsmodul"): An area of expert knowledge. This module allows students to acquire knowledge of an additional period and of an additional cultural studies problem, all accompanied by appropriate regular reading. Furthermore, certain key professional skills (e.g. presentational and communicational techniques) will be refined and deepened. There will be practice in the spoken and written presentation of the students’ research results.

To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed. Students' ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

Inhalt:

The story of Shakespeare’s advancement to the ranks of a classic and a national poet in 18th and 19th-century Germany has often been told, though mostly in the context of a continuous fight for the ‘true’ Shakespeare against the various distortions of the original by translators and adaptors.

It is rather rare in discussions of the genesis of the literary appropriation of Shakespeare in Germany that other, more immediately concerned agents (the producers, artists, translators, distributors) as well as political, social and economic factors are taken into account. Unfortunately, all too little is known about many of the publishers and printers involved in the process of literary mediators: how long did they exist, where were their centres of activity and what were their priorities? It is only in the case of some particularly large and influential publishing houses that, on the basis of sales catalogues, of the correspondence with authors, translators and book illustrators, of reviews and other documents, we are in a position to form a clearer idea of Shakespeare on the German book-market. In our seminar I would like to discuss this with reference to the particular case of the influential as well controversial figure of Carl Joseph Meyer, Georg Reimer, Gebr. Schumann and Friedrich Gotthelf Baumgärtner and his son Julius Alexander Baumgärtner.

Inhalt:

In this seminar we will have a closer look at the job of an archivist and/or librarian as a possible option for a student of “British Culture”. We will visit various archives and libraries in the area to learn more about the key duties of an archivist and/or librarian (e.g., evaluating, selecting, retrieving and arranging materials, answering queries, organising exhibitions, digitization, etc.). The main focus will be on exploring the projects in which the course coordinators are involved, which will give an insight into the range of roles and activities involved in presenting historic and cultural documents to a wide range of audiences. This should enhance students understanding of both public history in practice, and the opportunities this may present for them.

You will need to take notes during the workshops, so come prepared: pen and paper may be a good idea. However, the aim of the seminar is not that you take away pages and pages of notes, but that you take away lots of useful ideas and helpful experiences.

Since the workshops will be in English and/or German (depending on the institution), students must be fluent in German and English. There will be a “Vorbesprechung” (date TBA).
