Inhalt:

In a general sense, youth culture describes the way in which the specific identities of young people are formed and expressed through characteristic lifestyles, fashion, music, and leisure activities. More strictly defined, the term refers to groups of young people that show substantial independence from adult society. Most scholars in the fields of cultural studies and sociology agree that the phenomenon did not play a major role before the period after World War II, but some argue that there had been some youth cultures in the 1920s or even before. This seminar follows the development of different youth cultures from the early 20th century until today. More significantly, we will try to understand the phenomenon within a theoretical framework and in relation to such concepts as gangs, subcultures, post-subcultures, countercultures, club cultures, street movements, neotribes and others. Questions addressed in the seminar include: How are generational identities constructed? How have economic, political and cultural circumstances contributed to the formation of youth cultures? How important is the category of class in youth cultures and how does class consciousness of young people relate to their parents’ culture? What is the role of ‘gender’ and how do the categories ‘race’, ‘religion’ and ‘territory’ come into play? Should youth cultures be regarded as intrinsically subversive? And to what extent are they enmeshed in consumer society? How have youth cultures been portrayed in the media? How has the research on youth cultures developed in the course of time?

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

This course provides an overview of important approaches in the theory of culture. We will study key texts that have influenced the discipline of Cultural Studies in the Anglo-American world and beyond. Inhalt:

Even though it is a truism that British society is organised along strict class lines, the meaning of the word class is far from evident. While some sociologists try to pin down the phenomenon to economics only, scholars of culture should acknowledge that it has a multiplicity of facets. After discussing theoretical approaches to class and different ways the stratification of society has been conceptualized, the lecture looks at the historical development of social diversification from the early modern period onwards. The course then turns to the cultural determinants and manifestations of class, from ancestry to education, from language to manners, from clothing to patterns of recreation. We will furthermore examine intersections between class on the one hand and location, gender, ethnicity and religion on the other. In a final step the situation in Britain will be compared to the USA, a country that is sometimes overhastily described as a classless albeit unequal society.
