- Inhalt:
- Among the entries for the word persuasion in the Oxford English Dictionary we find this definition: "A form or system of religious belief; a creed. In later use also: a school of thought, esp. in politics. Usually with modifying word." Where persuasion is used in the political sense as in the title to this seminar it generally implies that people hold some deep convictions about the individual, society and the purpose of government that have become part of their identities. "Political Persuasions" also suggests that people's attitudes towards certain policy questions from abortion to the war on terror, from affirmative action to woke culture are systematically related. After some introductory sessions on the history of political philosophy and the elements of American democracy, this seminar studies schools of thought that have shaped American politics since World War II. Apart from major distinctions like left-wing and right-wing or conservative and progressive/liberal, we will look at finer gradations that demonstrate the complexity of American political thought. What are Old vs. New Democrats? How can we distinguish a paleoconservative from a neoconservative? Do libertarians fit into the left-right distinction? How should more recent phenomena like the intersectional left or the alt-right be classified? And should "Trumpism" be regarded as a school of thought? In regard to foreign policy, how do labels such as isolationist, idealist, and realist or hawkish vs. dovish for that matter fit into these categories? What do the "archetypes" of American foreign politics, Hamiltonian, Wilsonian, Jeffersonian, and Jacksonian, mean? The seminar is also interested in the way these political persuasions have organized institutionally within the major political parties, in think tanks, around newspapers and magazines and in the blogosphere.

- Inhalt:
- This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature’s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.
The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

- Inhalt:
- Post-war British literature was very much informed by a new generation of authors, who were also referred to as Angry Young Men, expressing their enormous discontent and frustration with society as a whole in their literary works. These novels, plays, and short stories often address issues such as class affiliation conditioning a person s success, class contrasts, and lack of class consciousness. In this seminar, we will thus be taking a closer class-related analytical look at the following canonical pieces of English literature: John Osborne s play Look Back in Anger (1956), Alan Sillitoe s novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1958), John Wain s novel Hurry on Down (1953), and Arnold Wesker s play Roots (1958). In addition, we will be dealing with Sillitoe s short story The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (1959). If you would like to take part in this seminar, please read these pieces of literature beforehand.

- Inhalt:
- London, probably more than any other city, is the subject and setting of an immense wealth of fictional and historical narratives, urban legends and myths, which to a considerable extent shape our perception and understanding of the metropolis. By examining representations of London in a varied selection of text forms from the Victorian era until today, we want to trace key motifs and narratives, identify how they relate to each other, and discuss their significance for popular visions of the British capital. Rather than following a strictly chronological approach, this course will focus on reoccurring themes, as well as depictions of places in the city: We will explore how e.g. poverty, the night in London, or the Underground have been por-trayed; we will discuss the shift from and the schism between depictions of London as 'imperial capital' to 'postcolonial metropolis', and examine which notions of London are revealed by personifications of the city from the last centuries.

- Inhalt:
- The time from the 1790s to the early 1830s, which is referred to as the Romantic period in British literary and art history, was not only a critical phase for the literary and cultural development, but also brought about important technological, economic, social and political changes. Apart from the Industrial Revolution, it was the overthrow of the political system across the Channel that provoked a heated discussion about the constitutional institutions, the legal system, the hierarchical order, the role of women, and the religious establishment in Britain. In the course of the “French Revolution Debate” ideological camps formed up, often referred to as the Jacobins and the anti-Jacobins or the conservatives and the radicals. The new literary movement that emerged sometimes engaged with the social and political realities and sometimes tried to avoid them by retreating into the realm of the imagination. In order to deepen an understanding of the historical, literary and cultural processes of the time, this practical course (Übung) analyses key texts ranging from the pamphlet to the religious tract and from the poem to the novel.
