Inhalt:

The appearance of conspiracy theories related to the Corona pandemic has drawn increased attention to the phenomenon of conspiracy theories in general. Cultural scholars as well as political scientists have long been analyzing the nature of conspiratorial beliefs. The seminar will draw upon their insights to shed light on fundamental questions surrounding conspiracy theories: How can we define and classify conspiracy theories? Is there a way of distinguishing them from real conspiracies? What is the origin of the concept and how has it developed? What are the underlying assumptions about human agency and the workings of societies that adherents of conspiratorial ideas subscribe to? Can psychological explanations help to elucidate their motives? Are some societies more prone to cultivate a “paranoid style” (R. Hofstadter) in politics? What is the connection between populism as a political stance and conspiracy theories? We will furthermore ask to what extent the label “conspiracy theory” can be used as a rhetorical strategy to accuse political opponents of “paranoia.”

Of course, the seminar will not only be concerned with theories of conspiracy theory; we will also discuss concrete examples from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Most of the conspiracy theories we will look at are American, some British and a few from other countries or international: the idea that the illuminati orchestrated the French Revolution; the allegation that a cabal of Catholics were intent upon the destruction of American liberties; the infamous anti-Semitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion; theories related to the assassination of John F. Kennedy; speculation about a fabricated moon landing; conspiracy theories surrounding the 9/11 terrorist attacks; reptilian conspiracy theories etc. We will encounter major figures of the scene, Alex Jones or David Icke among them. And we will learn more about recent “super conspiracies”, like the one propagated by followers of QAnon. I am open to integrating your suggestions – if you let me know in time.

Inhalt:

The sonnet is one of the most important poetic form in the English literary tradition. While being extremely versatile, it has also retained some long-lasting characteristics. Originally conceived for the expression of love and desire, the sonnet has expanded its range to include religious devotion, mourning and even political expression. From early on, a central concern of the sonnet has been poetic self-reflection. In all of these fields, poets have been required to condense their ideas in a narrowly defined space.

Starting its overview in early modern period, this seminar traces several strands of development, always with an interest in the interplay of content and form. As the interpretation of poetry requires some cultural and historical background, we will place the sonnets in the contexts of their literary periods. Some theoretical insights into the communicative functions of poetry will support our general understanding of the sonnets and the practice of close reading will improve our analytical skills.

Inhalt:

The first half of the 20th century was marked by major upheavals in Britain, such as, for example, the General Strike, the Great Depression, Labour’s rise to power as opposed to the decline of the Liberal Party, two world wars, and the loss of the Empire.

In this seminar, we will be looking into the field of power relationships during this critical period – firstly, from a rather theoretical (Foucauldian) angle and, secondly, from the point of view of literary works. We will especially analyse the portrayal of organised labour/trade unionism in Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s novel Sunset Song (1932), Gwyn Jones’s novel Times Like These (1936), Idris Davies’s long poem “The Angry Summer” (1943), and Arnold Wesker’s play Roots (1958).

The American West has always been associated with endless possibilities to start a new life with promise, hope and wealth. As part of the Western myth, California is often depicted as an exotic tropical paradise, the Garden of Eden or the end point of Manifest Destiny, in short, as the epitome of the American Dream. Numerous people have answered the call of the Golden State to build a better life in the West. Many of them dream of becoming movie stars, singers or high-tech entrepreneurs.

This seminar sets out to explain the California myth from its origin until today. We are going to analyze a variety of novels, poems, movies and songs as well as important biographies and historical events.

This course provides an overview of important approaches in the theory of culture. We will study key texts that have influenced the discipline of Cultural Studies in the Anglo-American world and beyond. Rather than being based on a lecture-style instruction, this class should be understood as a forum to discuss students’ positions toward the texts. A thorough preparation of the respective material is therefore imperative.

Inhalt:

While American Cultural Studies has always paid tribute to the importance of religion in the US, the question of religion has often been a blind spot in British Cultural Studies. In recent years, however, the discipline has increasingly acknowledged that religion has been a central part of people’s identities in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. This lecture provides a survey of the major tendencies and events of the religious history of Britain from the Early Modern Period to the present. Rather than dwelling on Biblical and theological issues, the lecture will show the relevance of important disputes for the formation of allegiances, solidarity and hostility.
