In this course students will have an opportunity to try out the main skills of language analysis that are introduced in the lecture Introduction to Linguistics . Inhalt:

This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar Introduction to Linguistics , which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

Inhalt:

One of the central observation in linguistics is that the same thing can be said in different ways: speakers of natural languages can choose between different sentence structures to express the same content, but packaged differently in accordance with specific communicative contexts. Likewise, specific patterns of information structuring are observable across individual sentences in connected discourse.

In this course, we will discuss basic notions of information structure, including more recent critical work on traditional notions like topic and focus, and non-canonical sentence structures that can be regarded as information structure constructions (left-dislocation, subject-predicate inversion, afterthoughts, etc). We will also be dealing with questions of information status (new versus given, etc), anaphoric relations and referential choice (full noun phrase versus pronoun versus zero anaphor, etc). The methodological focus of this course will be on the empirical investigation of information structure based on naturalistic corpora from diverse languages.

Inhalt:

In this course we teach Northern Kurdish, also known as Kurmanji, which is spoken in a large region of Eastern Turkey and in the neighbouring regions of Syria, North Iraq and Iran. Estimates of the numbers of speakers range ferom 12 to 20 Million. There is now a rich selection of Kurdish-language media available as well as a number of pedagogical sources; in the course we will work with our own selection of material that will be made available to the students via the VC. The course is run by two instructors. The first is a native speaker of Northern Kurdish, from the Kurdish Region of North Iraq, who will work on developing communicative competence in Kurdish, while the other is a linguist who will explain and exemplify the relevant structures of Kurdish. The languages of instruction are Kurdish and English.

In diesem Kurs wird das Nordkurdische (auch Kurmanji genannt) unterrichtet, das in einem zusammenhängenden Gebiet im Osten der Türkei sowie angrenzenden Teilen Syriens, Nordiraks und Irans von mindestens 12 Millionen Sprechern gesprochen wird (einigen Schätzungen zu Folge liegt diese Zahl eher bei 20 Millionen). Für den Unterricht kombinieren wir diese in einer eigenen Auswahl, die den Studierenden auch über den VC zur Verfügung gestellt wird. Der Unterricht wird zum Teil durch eine Muttersprachlerin aus dem kurdischsprachigen Nordirak durchgeführt, die die aktive kommunikative Kompetenz der Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer fördert, zum Teil durch einen Linguisten, der die Strukturen des Kurdischen vermittelt. Course Content
This class deals with topics of language contact based on the participant’s interests. A geographical focus on the languages of the Middle East will be suggested. Potential topics of interest include language change and variation, dialectology, societal or individual bi-/and multilingualism, language endangerment and shift, areal linguistics and Sprachbund phenomena, language typology and classification, contact languages such as pidgins and creoles, mixed languages or multi-ethnolects and so-called “new varieties“, - a hot issue in current contact linguistics. The course programme and learning objectives will be developed jointly during the first sessions.

Teaching Model
This course offers a group-oriented and self-responsible learning environment: The participants decide on the topics they wish to focus on and each take action in presenting aspects of them to the group. Each session will be guided by a person in charge for a topic who prepares materials and facilitates group learning. S/He is supported by the other participants taking over active roles during the session. The assessment of learning achievement will be based on a learning report written continuously during the course of the semester by either each student individually or jointly by a group.

Outcomes
During the course, students will learn to:
(i) self-responsibly determine their (research) interests, i.e. to find a topic they are interested in and to determine both the larger questions implicated by this topic as well as relevant sub-aspects.
(ii) self-responsibly put their (research) interests into effect, i.e. to develop methods for approaching their topic and its sub-aspects, finding literature and gather data/observe in a way to increase their understanding of a topic.
(iii) independently work on a topic of language contact while being aware of (recent) research questions of the field, suitable methods in data analysis, and relevant features and concepts, both linguistic-structural (e.g. structural convergence, grammatical or lexical borrowing, syntactic calquing), and social (e.g. accommodation, attitudes towards multilingualism, code-switching).

• Is there a direction of contact-induced language change?
• What happens to languages in contact?
• Does language contact lead to language loss or attrition?
• Are all parts of language equally subject to contact-induced change?
• How far can language contact go: hybridity and “mixed languages”?

Inhalt:

Die Linguistische Werkstatt ist eine Vortragsreihe mit Diskussionscharakter, in der ein breites Spektrum an linguistischen Fragestellungen behandelt wird. Vorträge werden sowohl von in Bamberg tätigen also auch auswärtigen Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern gehalten; auch Promovierende können die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit vortragen und zur Diskussion stellen. Die Reihe soll vor allem ein Diskussionsforum bieten, das über die Grenzen der einzelnen Fächer hinweg unterschiedliche Ansätze und Fragestellungen innerhalb der Linguistik umfasst. Promovierende der BaGL können die regelmäßige Teilnahme an der Werkstatt als Teil ihrer Pflichtveranstaltungen anrechnen lassen.

Inhalt:

Sociophonetics is the combination of theoretical frameworks, methods and principles of sociolinguistics and phonetics.

In this course we will explore the causes that contribute to the origin and spread of variation and change at the phonetic and phonological levels of speech production. Moreover, we will review the principle established methods and tools used in sociophonetic research. In particular students will learn to use the computer program Praat to apply these methods to original research.

Inhalt:

The label "pop" is omnipresent in today's society (e.g. pop music, pop fiction) and, although as yet no unequivocal definition or theory has been found and scepticism prevails, the study of pop culture is entering more and more fields of scholarly research.

In this seminar we will try to shed some light on the linguistic side of the complex, with a particular focus on the language of different genres and registers (also in contrast to so-called "high" culture manifestations, where applicable). We will take a pragmatic approach and consider pop culture broadly as contemporary (mass) media and entertainment culture.

Possible sources are comics and cartoons, literature, magazines and newspapers, music, TV shows and series, advertising, electronic communication, etc. More general aspects addressed are the globalization of culture and the English language, standard vs. non-standard English, register and style, gender issues and sociolinguistic aspects.

Die Veranstaltung kann für Studierende des Bachelorstudiengangs „Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft als Vorlesung (2 ECTS) für das Aufbaumodul eingebracht werden. In diesem Fall muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung, wie auch die FlexNow-Prüfungsanmeldung über den FlexNow-Zugang "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" erfolgen.

Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any in fact only eight inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related as they obviously are, when we compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7^th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced, and special areas of interest are the development of sounds and spelling, grammar, vocabulary and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS). Students from other BA programmes can earn 2 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2 or 4 ungraded, pass/fail or graded ECTS points. Everybody else who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without ECTS points.
Note that students of Lehramt Gymnasium and of B.A. Medieval Studies in their Basismodul must attend the Uebung "Englische Sprachgeschichte", not this lecture.

Inhalt:

A complete, thorough documentation of a language (variety) traditionally comprises a collection of texts (understood here as a collection of annotated recordings of linguistic performance, whether spoken and/or written), a dictionary (or lexical database) and a grammar, thus forming the Boasian triad.

This course deals with the descriptive (grammaticographic) component of language documentation. It covers more general aspects of grammar writing, including questions about what to include in a grammar, how to structure a description (macro- and microstructure), the choice between the analytic and the synthetic perspective, and questions pertaining to the empirical basis of a grammar (corpus data, acceptability judgments, etc). We will also discuss the specific purpose of a grammar sketch within a documentation project, and how the descriptive process interacts with procedures of data collection. More practically, participants will learn to develop a clear descriptive style of presentation, including the embedding of illustrative examples and the explication of linguistic analyses.
