Inhalt:

This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar Introduction to Linguistics , which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

Inhalt:

This course introduces students to the field of corpus linguistics, with a particular focus on lesser-studied languages. We will first discuss general ideas of corpus linguistics, including motivations for studying language through text corpora, variation in language use, types of text corpora and typical corpus-linguistic research questions. We then turn our attention to more research-practical aspects, in particular how to set up a research project based on existing corpora – including formulation of research questions, related corpus queries and quantitative analysis – and how to build corpora for more or less specific research projects, drawing in particular on language documentations from lesser-studied languages. The significance of text varieties, social factors of speakers, and modality, as well as questions of cross-language comparability and the role of small corpora in linguistic typology will be discussed. We will also consider the role of corpus linguistics in variantionist studies into language change and diversification.

Students will be expected to complete regular assignments and to devise their individual corpus-linguistic research projects on a topic of individual choice.

Inhalt:: This course is concerned with central aspects of phonetics and basic phonological concepts. It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress. Core readings and texts for transcription will be made available on the Virtual Campus after each session.

Inhalt:

In this course we teach Northern Kurdish, also known as Kurmanji, which is spoken in a large region of Eastern Turkey and in the neighboring regions of Syria, North Iraq and Iran. Students will be introduced to the basic grammatical structure of Kurmanji . We will also work in developing the communicative competence in Kurmanji. The language of instruction is Kurdish and English.

In diesem Kurs wird das Nordkurdische (auch Kurmanji genannt) unterrichtet, das in einem zusammenhängenden Gebiet im Osten der Türkei sowie angrenzenden Teilen Syriens, Nordiraks und Irans gesprochen wird. Course Content
This class deals with topics of language contact based on the participant s interests. A geographical focus on the languages of the Middle East will be suggested. Potential topics of interest include language change and variation, dialectology, societal or individual bi-/and multilingualism, language endangerment and shift, areal linguistics and Sprachbund phenomena, language typology and classification, contact languages such as pidgins and creoles, mixed languages or multi-ethnolects and so-called new varieties , - a hot issue in current contact linguistics. The course programme and learning objectives will be developed jointly during the first sessions.
Teaching Model
This course offers a group-oriented and self-responsible learning environment: The participants decide on the topics they wish to focus on and each take action in presenting aspects of them to the group. Each session will be guided by a person in charge for a topic who prepares materials and facilitates group learning. S/He is supported by the other participants taking over active roles during the session. The assessment of learning achievement will be based on a learning report written continuously during the course of the semester by either each student individually or jointly by a group.
Outcomes
During the course, students will learn to: (i) self-responsibly determine their (research) interests, i.e. to find a topic they are interested in and to determine both the larger questions implicated by this topic as well as relevant sub-aspects. (ii) self-responsibly put their (research) interests into effect, i.e. to develop methods for approaching their topic and its sub-aspects, finding literature and gather data/observe in a way to increase their understanding of a topic. (iii) independently work on a topic of language contact while being aware of (recent) research questions of the field, suitable methods in data analysis, and relevant features and concepts, both linguistic-structural (e.g. structural convergence, grammatical or lexical borrowing, syntactic calquing), and social (e.g. accommodation, attitudes towards multilingualism, code-switching).

Inhalt:

This course is a continuation of the course from the winter term, and is only available to students who attended that course. We will focus on producing a sketch grammar, set of transcribed and annotated texts, and a short lexicon of Svan, based on the data collected in the previous term. We will also continue to work with our language consultant. Regular weekly classes will take place on Wednesday, the sessions with our language consultant are provisionally reserved for Fridays, though this is subject to negotiation.

Inhalt:

Individual languages differ from each other in many and various ways. However, linguistic research over the past five decades has generally reinforced the view that cross-linguistic variation is neither arbitrary, nor infinite, but falls with certain definable limits. Language typology is the branch of linguistics concerned with establishing the range of cross-language variation, mapping its distribution in time and space, and formulating explanations for the attested variation. Language typologists have investigated phonological systems, morphology, various semantic fields (e.g. colour terms), as well as a number of syntactic phenomena. In this course we will look at some of the landmarks in typology, focussing on topics from morphology and syntax.

The colloquium is primarily aimed at graduate students (MA and PhD candidates) who are working on a thesis, or are developing their research questions. Students will be expected to present their work, and engage with the other participants and the lecturer in discussions of key concepts in method and theory. Inhalt:

This course presents an overview of the linguistic context of today’s Middle East, and lays down the conceptual framework for analysing linguistic diversity in the region. The first part introduces the early history of the region, before introducing the three main language groups currently spoken there: Turkic, Semitic (presented by Prof. Lutz Edzard), and Iranian. The concept of ‘language family’ and ‘genetic relatedness’ will be exemplified using data from these languages, and contrasted with the concepts of ‘typological similarity’, and ‘areal convergence’. We will also look at some of the lesser-known languages of the region, including Domari (Indo-Aryan) and Laz (Kartvelian), which do not belong to the three main groups. The second part considers different empirical approaches to the linguistics of the Middle East, illustrated with selected case-studies:

Students will be required to hold an oral presentation (20 mins.) on a topic to be selected in consultation with the instructor, and to submit a term paper.

Informationen für Studierende der Allgemeinen Sprachwissenschaft:
Wenn die Vorlesung im Bachelorstudiengang „Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft“ eingebracht werden soll, muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung wie auch die FlexNow-Prüfungsanmeldung über den FlexNow-Zugang "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" erfolgen.
Für die Studierenden der Allgemeinen Sprachwissenschaft gilt folgende Modulzuordnung: Vorlesung (2 ECTS) für das Aufbaumodul 2 des Bachelorstudiengangs Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft.

Inhalt:

Die kognitive Linguistik ist keine einheitliche formale Theorie, sondern vielmehr eine moderne und alternative Sichtweise auf dieselben Phänomene, die auch die strukturalistische Sprachwissenschaft bereits zu erklären suchte. Während diese aber Sprache als ein in sich geschlossenes Gesamtsystem zu beschreiben suchte, quasi als Kommunikationsspiele im luftleeren Raum, versucht die kognitive Linguistik die Fortschritte im Bereich der Kognitionspsychologie konsequent zur Beschreibung und Erklärung sprachlicher Phänomene zu nutzen und so der Tatsache Rechnung zu tragen, dass Sprache von Menschen verwendet wird. Die Vorlesung ist in ihrer Thematik auf weiten Strecken gewissermaßen eine Wiederholung der allgemeinen Einführung in die Sprachwissenschaft, aber aus einer gänzlich neuen Perspektive. Dabei wird es unter anderem darum gegen, wie wir unsere Umwelt kategorisierend erfassen oder wie Sprechen und Denken sich zueinander verhalten. Grundlage der Vorlesung ist Pörings / Schmitz (2003), ein Einleitungswerk, das in internationaler Kooperation von einem Autorenteam mit jeweils angepassten Beispielen in verschiedenen Sprachen fast zeitgleich veröffentlicht wurde. Ergänzend zur Vorlesung wird eine vertiefende Lektüreübung angeboten.
