Inhalt:

In this course students will have an opportunity to try out the main skills of language analysis that are introduced in the lecture Introduction to Linguistics . Students will work intensively on example sets taken from a broad range of different languages, to discuss different analyses, and to evaluate different theoretical proposals. Inhalt:

This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar Introduction to Linguistics , which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

Inhalt:

This course deals with the relationship between language and culture. We will start out by examining different aspects of language that are particularly tightly connected to cultural considerations, for instance rules of verbal interaction (“ethnography of speaking”), kin systems and conceptual structures of the natural world (body parts, taxonomies of living beings), and their reflections in linguistic structures. We will later turn to more theoretical questions concerning, for instance the extent to which linguistic and cultural practices may influence the way we see the world (Sapir-Whorf), the nature of the relation between language and culture, levels of representational categories and issues pertaining to methodologically sound comparison of languages and cultures. The goal of the course is to familiarise students with theoretical concepts pertaining to anthropological linguistics and the basic toolkit for their empirical study. Given that both language and culture comprise sets of knowledge that is mostly tacit, a central goal of the course is to train ourselves to reflect upon the languages and cultures we are familiar with and make our knowledge explicit in a clear manner. Basic reading and more detailed information on the structure and content of the course will be made available closer to the start date of the teaching period.

Inhalt:

In this course we teach Northern Kurdish, also known as Kurmanji, which is spoken in a large region of Eastern Turkey and in the neighboring regions of Syria, North Iraq and Iran. Students will be introduced to the basic grammatical structure of Kurmanji . We will also work in developing the communicative competence in Kurmanji. The language of instruction is Kurdish and English.

In diesem Kurs wird das Nordkurdische (auch Kurmanji genannt) unterrichtet, das in einem zusammenhängenden Gebiet im Osten der Türkei sowie angrenzenden Teilen Syriens, Nordiraks und Irans gesprochen wird. Den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern werden die grundlegenden grammatikalischen Strukturen des Kurmanji vermittelt, darüber hinaus wird ihre aktive kommunikative Kompetenz gefördert. Unterrichtssprachen sind Englisch und Kurdisch.

Inhalt:

One of the central characteristics of human language and individual languages is diversity: a wealth of diverse phonological, grammatical and lexical/semantic structures can be observed across languages, and across communities and cultures. A more basic dimension of language diversity is the variable design of language within a specific community, that is how different speakers from different social groups differ in their use and representation of linguistic structures. Social factors correlating with language diversity in Western and other economically developed societies are regional background, age, gender, socioeconomic status, education and occupation, and we will focus on these for the purposes of this course. However, we will also touch upon more recent work on smaller-scale communities where other social dimensions are often relevant, for instance clan, moiety or “skin” membership in societies of Papuanesia and Australia. We will also deal with choices of language in multilingual communities and minority languages, including Western societies, and the basic dimensions of language contact.

Students will be expected to complete regular assignments and to devise their individual small research projects on a topic of individual choice. References and sources will be made available through the VC page of this course closer to the beginning of the semester.

Inhalt:

Course content
This course focuses on one practical option linguists have to provide an answer to language endangerment and the global loss of linguistic diversity (Krauss 1992, i.a.): language documentation, including linguistic fieldwork and grammar writing. In this course, we will learn how to plan and conduct a language documentation project while at the same time discussing methodological, practical, theoretical and ethical issues.

Learning objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will:
i. be able to plan a language documentation project
ii. be prepared to conduct basic linguistic field work
iii. be able to carry out initial stages of the grammar writing process
iv. be able to critically consider theoretical, methodological and ethical aspects in language documentation and maintenance

Some guiding questions:
-Which languages to document?
-For which purpose to document a language? What can be done?
-How to document a language? Which measures can be undertaken?
-Do we have the right to document a language? Whom does a language belong to?

During the course, students will work on their individual small language documentation project, which will be finally submitted as portfolio exam. It is advantageous if participants have a rough idea of a language they want to document when coming to the course.

The course will be taught in a hybrid format with in-person meetings, individual learning phases, online meetings at MS Teams and a one-day in-person workshop on Fri, 11 Dec 2020 (provided the pandemic situation allows for physical meetings).

Inhalt:: Die Linguistische Werkstatt ist eine Vortragsreihe mit Diskussionscharakter, in der ein breites Spektrum an linguistischen Fragestellungen behandelt wird. Vorträge werden sowohl von in Bamberg tätigen also auch auswärtigen Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern gehalten; auch Promovierende können die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit vortragen und zur Diskussion stellen. Die Reihe soll vor allem ein Diskussionsforum bieten, das über die Grenzen der einzelnen Fächer hinweg unterschiedliche Ansätze und Fragestellungen innerhalb der Linguistik umfasst. Promovierende der BaGL können die regelmäßige Teilnahme an der Werkstatt als Teil ihrer Pflichtveranstaltungen anrechnen lassen.

The colloquium is primarily aimed at graduate students (MA and PhD candidates) who are working on a thesis, or are developing their research questions. Students will be expected to present their work, and engage with the other participants and the lecturer in discussions of key concepts in method and theory. Please contact the lecturer via email if you wish to attend, and give an indication of your research interests.
The colloquium is also open to interested linguists of all backgrounds who wish to participate in general exchange of ideas, and we may, depending on the programme, also be able to incorporate additional presentations; please check with the lecturer beforehand.

Inhalt:

In this course we will study the development of reasoning and theorising about syntactic structure over the last 60 or so years. We will be dealing with conceptions of words combine into phrases, and phrases into higher-order phrases and sentences, and how such syntactic structures are mapped onto semantic structures of event representations. Particular topics of discussion will be the different conceptions of syntactic structures as constituency and dependency, recursion, binding and complex sentences, and questions concerning argument structure. We will consider frameworks from both the generative-formalist and the typological-functionalist tradition.

Inhalt:

Linguistically, the Middle East is politically dominated by a small number of national languages (e.g. Hebrew, Arabic, Persian and Turkish), but the region is in fact home to speakers of a much larger range of languages, many of which are seriously under-researched and now heavily endangered. This seminar examines the dynamics of language contact and multilingualism across the region, focussing on four main thematic blocks with contributions by scholars from a number of distinct disciplines:

1. Minority languages in the Middle East: The dynamics of maintenance and loss
2. Language idealogies and power: Nation states and language politics in the Middle East
3. Middle Eastern languages in migration contexts
4. The typology of Middle Eastern language contact: stability and adaptivity in language structure

The course consists of 9 public webinars, given by a range of leading scholars in the field, who will present on different facets of the topic, based on their own research. In addition, we will convene additional teaching sessions (planned for face-to-face) for students from Bamberg and Erlangen wishing to credit the course towards their degree programmes.

Students will be expected to attend the webinars, and to participate in the 4 additional seminars. For each of the four thematic blocks, written assignments will be required.
