Inhalt:

In this course students will have an opportunity to try out the main skills of language analysis that are introduced in the lecture Introduction to Linguistics . Students will work intensively on example sets taken from a broad range of different languages, to discuss different analyses, and to evaluate different theoretical proposals. Inhalt:

This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar Introduction to Linguistics , which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

Inhalt:

In the English language spoken before around 1500, it was common to negate a simple clause using the particle not, and placing it after the verb, as in: go not! For today s English speakers, however, this would sound very odd, because today, the same meaning is expressed using a negated form of do, as in: don t go! This is a simple example of syntactic change, but it raises many questions: Why should the speakers of English replace their VERB+not structure with don't+VERB? Did they do so suddenly, or gradually? What steps would have been involved? Can we relate this change to similar changes in other languages? The branch of linguistics that investigates syntactic change is diachronic, or historical, syntax. Diachronic syntax examines the ways in which the syntax of languages change over time, and develops models to account for them. In this course, we will review different kinds of syntactic change and some of the models that have been put forward to account for them, with a special emphasis on grammaticalization. We also discuss the issue of gradual versus abrupt change, and look at recent advances in corpus linguistics as a source of evidence in diachronic syntax.

Inhalt:

Reference is an integral part of language, and indeed of most systems of communication. When speakers refer to a person, object, event, or point in time, they are tasked with making a series of decisions -- which entity to refer to, how to embed it into a syntactic structure, which type of expression (a pronoun, noun, proper name, etc.) to use for it -- in a process that is highly routinized. This course concerns itself with the last of these decisions, the choice of form, or referential choice. This is a topic that has received considerable attention since the 1970s, and has only gained in relevance since then, both in linguistic and in adjacent fields (e.g. GREC in natural language processing). In this course, we will examine a number of theoretical and empirical approaches to referential choice, and in the context of the latter conduct our own small investigations into various aspects of referential choice, chiefly from a corpus linguistic angle and with a focus on spoken language and cross-linguistic comparison.

Inhalt:

In this course we teach Northern Kurdish, also known as Kurmanji, which is spoken in a large region of Eastern Turkey and in the neighboring regions of Syria, North Iraq and Iran. In this course, we will work on more advanced grammatical structure of Kurmanji and will concentrate more on speaking and writing skills. This course is for students who have some basic knowledge of Kurdish. The language of instruction is Kurdish and English.
In diesem Kurs wird das Nordkurdische (auch Kurmanji genannt) unterrichtet, das in einem zusammenhängenden Gebiet im Osten der Türkei sowie angrenzenden Teilen Syriens, Nordiraks und Irans gesprochen wird. Im Rahmen des Kurses werden grammatikalische Strukturen des Kurmanji vertieft behandelt und der Unterricht konzentriert sich vor allem auf Sprechfähigkeit und Schreibkompetenz. Inhalt:: Variation and change are central properties of all languages. Thus, rather than speaking of one "English", it is more adequate to conceive of multiple "Englishes" or at least of English as a pluricentric language. This lecture series, delivered by a range of international experts, will take multiple perspectives on the guiding topic and will illustrate the many ways in which language variation and change (i) can be assessed from a scholarly perspective and (ii) have bearings on everyday language usage.

This course provides an overview into the main issues surrounding the concepts of pidgin and creoles. Broadly speaking, we need to consider both the particular sociocultural conditions that lead to the emergence of these two phenomena, and the kinds of linguistic forms (phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon etc.) which characterize them.

This course offers an introduction to quantitative approaches to linguistics. It covers general principles of empirical research, various methods of data collection and assessment (including questionnaire design as well as corpus annotation and queries), as well as basic concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics. It also includes a (gentle) introduction to statistical computing with R.

Inhalt:

The colloquium is primarily aimed at graduate students (MA and PhD candidates) who are working on a thesis, or are developing their research questions. Students will be expected to present their work, and engage with the other participants and the lecturer in discussions of key concepts in method and theory. Please contact the lecturer via email if you wish to attend, and give an indication of your research interests.
The colloquium is also open to interested linguists of all backgrounds who wish to participate in general exchange of ideas, and we may, depending on the programme, also be able to incorporate additional presentations; please check with the lecturer beforehand.

Inhalt:: This course is available for advanced students wishing to engage with the practice of language documentation, working on an endangered and poorly-described language, Svan (spoken in Georgia). The course continues work that we have undertaken with a Svan native speaker, and will involve in particular recording, annotating and analysing speech samples with the aim of creating an online-accessible documentation of the language.
