Inhalt:

This online block seminar is a methodological course aiming at training academic writing skills in linguistics, for example in preparation of a final thesis like the BA or MA dissertation. After completion of this course, students will be able to write a linguistic paper complying both with the guidelines for good academic practice and the formal requirements in linguistics.
Among others, in the course we will learn how to find a good research question, do proper academic literature research, integrate and cite academic references correctly, structure a paper, build an argumentation, write the introduction and conclusion, as well as drafting an abstract. As an overarching topic, we will deal with research on linguistic minorities. This involves structural topics like bilingualism, language contact or language endangerment, but also sociolinguistic aspects such as the intersection of language policies, language identity and language use.
This course will be completed by a term paper (ca. 6 pages) on an individual research question from the area of linguistic minorities. Since the focus of the block seminar is on the academic writing process, participants are expected to prepare the necessary readings for their individual term papers in self-study. However, space to deal with the individual topics will be also given during the block seminars in a workshop-like character.
In order to be able to embark on their individual research in the course right away, students should bring a rough idea of a potential research question they would like to work on to the first meeting block.
Note: This course is intended to provide a general understanding of the academic research process. Therefore, this course is especially designed for those students who have not already considerable experience in academic writing.

Inhalt:

This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar Introduction to Linguistics , which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

Inhalt:: This course will investigate selected syntactic and lexical constructions in the English language from the point of view of Construction Grammar. Constructions will be defined as conventional (i.e. learned) pairings of form and meaning, which are part of a speaker’s mental grammar. Speakers of a given language need constructions to produce and understand utterances in that language. As is characteristic of the Construction Grammar approach to language, no sharp boundary will be assumed between the lexicon and syntax. The set of English constructions to be discussed in this class will include, among others, valency-changing constructions (as illustrated by digging one’s way out of prison), expressive binominal constructions (such as a gem of a town), idioms (e.g. let the cat out of the bag), Noun+Noun compounds (e.g. coffee coffee) and so-called phrasal nouns or complex nominals (e.g. Adjective+Noun combinations, such as electrical engineering). Data from online corpora, such as the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), will be employed to examine properties of selected constructions.

Inhalt:

In this course we teach Northern Kurdish, also known as Kurmanji, which is spoken in a large region of Eastern Turkey and in the neighboring regions of Syria, North Iraq and Iran. Students will be introduced to the basic grammatical structure of Kurmanji . We will also work in developing the communicative competence in Kurmanji. The language of instruction is Kurdish and English.

In diesem Kurs wird das Nordkurdische (auch Kurmanji genannt) unterrichtet, das in einem zusammenhängenden Gebiet im Osten der Türkei sowie angrenzenden Teilen Syriens, Nordiraks und Irans gesprochen wird. Den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern werden die grundlegenden grammatikalischen Strukturen des Kurmanji vermittelt, darüber hinaus wird ihre aktive kommunikative Kompetenz gefördert. Inhalt:

This course presents an overview of the linguistic context of today s Middle East. The first part introduces the early history of the region, before introducing the three main language groups currently spoken there: Turkic, Semitic (presented by Prof. Lutz Edzard), and Iranian. We then progress to the present language situation, focussing on language ideologies and language planning in today s nation states, and different kinds of societal bilingualism in selected countries of the region. The second part of the course focusses on the lesser-known (minority) languages of the region, and introduces different empirical approaches to investigating minority languages, focussing on the sub-disciplines of language documentation and sociolinguistics.
Students will be required to hold an oral presentation (20 mins.) on a topic to be selected in consultation with the instructor, and to submit a term paper.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to selected languages of Western Asia. The course units are devoted to representative languages of this area, containing an introduction to the relevant historical and socio-cultural background as well as sketches of parts of the grammar (phonology, morphology, syntax). Issues related to variation within languages (different varieties, diachronic changes) and areal phenomena, especially language contact and the impact of current social transformations on the language use will be of particular interest.
This course is jointly offered by linguists of the LACIM network (Languages of Anatolia, Caucasus, Iran, Mesopotamia; https://en.lacim.net/) introducing languages of their expertise. The program of this year contains units taught by Christiane Bulut (Nikosia), Anaid Donabedian (Paris), Geofrey Haig (Bamberg), Polette Samvelian (Paris), Nina Sumbatova (Moscow), Stavros Skopeteas (Göttingen), +++. The course will be offered by a digital platform and will offer the possibility to exchange with international colleagues and students of Linguistics in Bamberg, Cambridge, Moscow, Nicosia, Paris.
The students will be offered an introduction to the available research and data resources (text collections, dictionaries and electronic databases) of the individual languages as well as the possibility to create their own projects either in conjunction with a certain language or on cross-linguistic issues comparing several languages.

Inhalt:

The course provides a practical introduction to linguistic fieldwork, with the aim of describing a language of which the participants have no prior knowledge. The course has two parts: first, there are regular sessions with a native speaker of that language, and students attempt to discover the main aspects of lexicon and grammar through the technique of elicitation. Second, there are sessions with the linguistic supervisor, who guides the analysis and supervises the handling of the language data.
Students will be obliged to take on some sub-area of the analysis, and to produce a short description using the material that is gathered during the field-work sessions (which are generally recorded).

Inhalt:: Die Linguistische Werkstatt ist eine Vortragsreihe mit Diskussionscharakter, in der ein breites Spektrum an linguistischen Fragestellungen behandelt wird. Vorträge werden sowohl von in Bamberg tätigen also auch auswärtigen Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern gehalten; auch Promovierende können die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit vortragen und zur Diskussion stellen. Die Reihe soll vor allem ein Diskussionsforum bieten, das über die Grenzen der einzelnen Fächer hinweg unterschiedliche Ansätze und Fragestellungen innerhalb der Linguistik umfasst. Promovierende der BaGL können die regelmäßige Teilnahme an der Werkstatt als Teil ihrer Pflichtveranstaltungen anrechnen lassen.

For BA students, this course is part of the Ergänzungsmodul.

The course comprises three online sessions, all of which require attendance via MS Teams: Two hours (8-10 am) on Friday, 29 October, two hours (8-10 am) on Thursday, 11 November, and three hours (8-11 am) on Friday, 12 November, with a little project work in between. Please contact the lecturers for special arrangements if you encounter timetabling issues. Description:
The Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics" accompanies a linguistic seminar (for BA: Ergänzungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft; for LA Gym: Vertiefungsmodul Englische Sprachwissenschaft; for MA: Mastermodule English Linguistics). It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in using specific sources of information and technologies as well as in collecting, analysing and visualizing their own empirical data. The topics treated will include aspects of academic writing (handling secondary literature, referencing, structuring a termpaper), the analysis of linguistic corpora and other databases, the use of online dictionaries, the construction of questionnaires, the analysis of audio-recorded data, the interpretation of experiments, etc.

Inhalt:: Do you sometimes wonder whether an expression you have heard or read is actually appropriate to use in a certain context? Do you regularly rack your brains for a good way of expressing your ideas in an essay or term paper? Do people sometimes ask you to proofread their texts but you find it hard to judge their language? Are you considering a career in teaching English but feel daunted by the prospect of corrections piling up on your desk? Know-how of the right digital resources can help you with these tasks.

This practical course aims to enable participants to use corpus tools to assess their own and other writers' text production. Corpora are digital text collections representative of one or more than one regional variety, genre and text type, which can be accessed through various interfaces, many of them freely available online. Corpus skills put users in a position to check whether a certain word, collocation or syntactic structure conforms to the norms of competent language users, and they provide insights into what these norms are (in terms of registers and regional varieties). Participants will build up their competence as corpus users, developing simple and complex corpus searches and critically monitoring query results and numerical output. We will also explore ready-made corpus-based tools designed to help with (academic) writing tasks.

COVID-19 permitting, we will exploit the LanguageLLab (LU19/00.09) and its new array of tablet devices to experience a realistic digital classroom setting. The outcome will be evaluated and compared to the outcomes of comparable courses documented in the literature on (advanced) English language teaching.

Inhalt:

Comparing one language to another almost inevitably leads to metalinguistic insights. Despite (or because of) their close relationship, this is also true of English and German. This interdisciplinary lecture will start out by exploring basic grammatical concepts such as case, concord, government, valency and semantic roles. Selected syntactic constructions of English and German will be discussed and exemplified with reference to spoken and written language data. Among others, these include:

tense and aspect
the versatility of grammatical relations
passivization options
constituent order in main and subordinate clauses
types of non-finite clauses

Characteristics of English and German syntax will also be viewed against a typological and historical background. The lecture will be interactive: each session will conclude with a collaborative exercise. English and German will alternate as languages of instruction; participants are welcome to use either language.

Sprachvergleich führt beinahe automatisch zur Sprachreflexion. Trotz oder gerade wegen ihrer engen Verwandtschaft trifft dies auf das Englische und Deutsche zu. In unserer interdisziplinären Vorlesung konzentrieren wir uns zunächst auf grammatische Konzepte wie Kasus, Kongruenz, Rektion, Valenz und semantische Rollen. Daneben werden ausgewählte syntaktische Strukturen des Englischen und Deutschen anhand von gesprochener und geschriebener Sprache diskutiert, u.a.:

die Vielseitigkeit grammatischer Relationen
Formen der Passivierung
die Wort- und Satzgliedstellung in Haupt- und Nebensätzen

Inhalt:

Word order - the linear ordering of constituents in the clause - has been a fruitful area of cross-linguistic research for more than 50 years and remains the most widely-researched topic in contemporary language typology. This course introduces students to the context and rationale behind language typology itself, and the main developments in word order typology, starting with traditional grammar-based typology as pioneered by Joseph Greenberg in the 1960 s. From there we cover a number of related issues, closing with more recent corpus-based approaches (e.g. Levshina 2020). Word order typology is also intimately connected to the development of syntactic theory, and the concept of universal , which will also figure prominently in the course. The course is divided into the following six thematic blocks: (1) Foundations of language typology; (2) Greenberg ian word order typology (WOT); (3) Explanations in WOT; (4) Areal effects in WOT; (5) Diachronic WOT; (6) Corpus-based approaches to WOT. Students will work on a mix of conceptual and empirical readings and data, and are expected to give an oral presentation on topic of their choice (see below for options), and to complete a term paper of approx. 14 pages.
Pre-condition: Good background in syntactic analysis (at least equivalent to admission to MA programme)
