Aktuelle Befunde der Migrations- und Integrationsforschung: Acculturation attitudes of immigrants and natives

Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
The seminar will place particular emphasis on empirical research articles; therefore, a profound basic knowledge of quantitative/statistical research methods is essential for attendance. The language of instruction will optionally be English or German, in order to facilitate international students’ course attendance. The examination consists of a presentation (1/3) and the submission of a seminar paper (2/3). The registration to the seminar and the examination via FlexNow is necessary for the acquisi-tion of a certificate.

Weekly reading and questions for discussion: Regular attendance, active participation and weekly reading of the compulsory literature are expected. Participants are required to weekly submit 1-3 discussion questions (e.g. criticism, open questions, questions for discussion, scientific or societal outlook) based on the compulsory reading: upload via virtual campus (VC) due Sunday evening.

Presentation (15 min): Aim of the presentation is to give a short revision of previous week’s contents, to summarize the weekly reading (max. 3 slides) as well as to offer an own conclusion (including em-phasis of specific aspects of the paper, critical reflection of the paper, references to previous con-tents in the seminar and to other classes and contents, scientific and societal outlook). Finally, own research questions and a selection of own and submitted discussion questions are presented.

Seminar paper (15-20 / 20-25 pages): The topic is freely selectable within the scope of the seminar. Please consult the seminar instructor in order to agree upon a topic for your paper. Seminar papers can be submitted in English or German. Latest possible submission date: 30.09.2018.

Inhalt:
Current debates and controversies about immigration to Western Europe often revolve around con-cerns and questions about cultural integration. In the aftermath of 2015’s Europe’s ‘refugee crisis’, fears about foreign cultural infiltration as well as claims for adaptation to Western European values and norms have been raised, especially for immigrants that are perceived as culturally different. In fact, natives and immigrants highly disagree on the question to what extent immigrants should adapt host culture and keep home culture elements. Focuses of the seminar are acculturation attitudes of immigrant and natives, attitude discrepancies and their role for intergroup relations and immigrant acculturation. We will read a couple of introductory texts from sociology and social psychology about acculturation and acculturation attitudes, before we turn towards empirical research results about description, causes and consequences of acculturation attitudes of natives and immigrants. Finally, we will have a look at alternative research approaches beyond classical acculturation research.

Inhalt:
For long periods of time, the social sciences were characterized by the application of nonexperi-mental methods such as social surveys, interviewing, or direct observation. In recent decades how-ever, experimental research has become more and more popular. Moreover, some social science questions may even be best addressed with the use of experiments, particularly those that concern causality.
Similarly, early migration studies tended to neglect gender-specific arguments and paid less atten-tion to migration and integration processes that differ between genders. Yet contemporary research highlights such issues.
This seminar picks up on these developments and introduces into the basics of experimental research, as well as into gender-specific migration effects. The first part of the class covers the essen-tials of experimental design and introduces into different experimental types (laboratory, field, and vignette). The second part of the class gives an overview of intersections between migration and gen-der. In the last (and core) part of the seminar, we will conduct our own experiments that address gender-specific effects of migration.

Moreover, some social science questions may even be best addressed with the use of experiments, particularly those that concern causality.
Similarly, early migration studies tended to neglect gender-specific arguments and paid less attention to migration and integration processes that differ between genders. Yet contemporary research highlights such issues.
This seminar picks up on these developments and introduces into the basics of experimental re-search, as well as into gender-specific migration effects. The first part of the class covers the essen-tials of experimental design and introduces into different experimental types (laboratory, field, and vignette). The second part of the class gives an overview of intersections between migration and gen-der. In the last (and core) part of the seminar, we will conduct our own experiments that address gender-specific effects of migration.

Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Das Kolloquium richtet sich an Studierende, die gegenwärtig am Lehrstuhl für Soziologie, insbesondere Sozialstrukturanalyse ihre Abschlussarbeit schreiben. Die Arbeiten werden im Rahmen der Veranstaltung vorgestellt und gemeinsam diskutiert.
Die regelmäßige Teilnahme ist verpflichtend und zumeist Teil des entsprechenden Moduls zur Abschlussarbeit. In bestimmten Studiengängen ersetzt sie die Verteidigung. Aufgrund der Vielfalt der Studienrichtungen und Prüfungsordnungen sollten Sie im Vorfeld der Anmeldung Ihrer Arbeit prüfen, welche Nachweise in Ihrem Studiengang zu erbringen sind.
