Advanced Grammar Usage (C1) (HaF)

Angaben:
Übung, 2 SWS, ECTS: 3, Studium Generale
Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Eine Anmeldung ist erforderlich.
An- und Abmeldefristen im FlexNow-Onlinesystem entnehmen Sie bitte der Website des Sprachenzentrums.

This course may also be attended by students in the European Joint Master s Degree English and American Studies (Master Module Language Proficiency).

Placement Test for English HaF courses
Only for students who are NOT students of Anglistik at the University of Bamberg. To attend English classes, students must take an obligatory placement test before the beginning of the semester. This helps us to place students in the correct level. The placement test evaluates grammar, reading, listening and vocabulary, and must be completed before FlexNow registration closes. Students who do not take the test may not be able to attend English courses this semester.

Please don’t forget to bring a set of headphones with you!

Description of the Placement Test
There are a total of 100 questions in the test. The questions slowly become harder in the later parts of the test. The time limit for the placement test is 60 minutes but students can submit the test earlier if they have finished. Students can return to any part of the test to check their answers at any point before they submit their test.

Test Results
No certificate will be issued for the completion of a placement test. The test cannot be “passed” or “failed”. Instead, after the evaluation of the test, the results will be posted on the following day in the Language Center and on the Language Center website with a score out of 100 and your CEFR level (B1, B2 etc.). When you have the confirmation of your CEFR level, you can register for a course at the correct level.

If you have taken a course in general English, you do not have to take a placement test again. If you are a student of Anglistik/English and American Studies, you do not have to take this placement test at all!

Results of the test are valid for four semesters.

Additionally, students should register in FlexNow under Englisch: HaF Placement Test for one of the following test dates:

If you have any questions about the HaF placement test, please contact catherine.irvine(at)uni-bamberg.de for more information.

NOTE: Erasmus students should attend Grammar for Erasmus Students before attending this course!
Inhalt:
Advanced Grammar Usage is an in-depth “polishing” course aimed at fostering the grammatical competence necessary for future English teachers, writers, or editors. The course provides opportunities for practice/rehearsal that are geared to helping students navigate the intricacies of advanced grammatical structures: tenses, aspect, mood, irregular verbs etc. Exercises, activities and explanations aimed at assisting students ib identifying advanced grammatical errors and areas of interference between English and German will be the focus of the course to foster the linguistic competence students need to make informed judgments on language produced by themselves and others – whether in order to fix a poorly translated website or to explain grammar points in the classroom.

Placement Test for English HaF courses

Which sounds better, ”We all make mistakes” OR ”We all do mistakes”? ”My English knowledges could be better?” OR ”My English knowledge could be better?” Would you like to make your English more accurate and authentic? Then this course will help you to avoid making typical mistakes native speakers of German often make - in spoken and written English.

Areas of focus will include:
• Pronunciation pitfalls
• Vocabulary mistakes
• Grammatical gaffes in sentence structure, tenses and prepositions
• Malformed and misspelt words
• False Friends

A mid-term exam (worth 50% of the final mark) and a final examination (worth 50% of the final mark) comprise the components of the evaluation for the class.

This course is only open to native speakers of German.

This course is aimed at advanced M.A. and Ph.D. students both of English and from other disciplines and faculties within the University of Bamberg.
This course may also be attended by students in the European Joint Master s Degree English and American Studies (Master Module Language Proficiency).

Inhalt:
This block seminar is divided into two parts. The first session, Writing Academic Papers in English , will highlight the skills necessary to write in English at an advanced academic level and focus on abstract writing for both journals and conferences. The second session, Presenting Academic Papers in English , offers a review of the skills needed to become a successful presenter and the opportunity to present a 20-minute conference paper to the group with subsequent feedback from the other participants and the lecturer.

The course will ideally look at "work in progress" being carried out by advanced students as part of their doctoral programmes. It is not primarily designed for students of English, but for those who have to work in and with English within their academic careers.

For prospective participants who do not have student access to FlexNow, an email announcing interest in participating in the course should be sent to the instructor (catherine.irvine@uni-bamberg.de) by 17.10.2016. All prospective participants will be informed by email about whether there is capacity for them to attend before the semester begins.

Inhalt:
Activities in Grundkurs I focus on the three fundamental skills in the English language (reading, listening and writing). The aim is to make participants more proficient in understanding spoken and written English and to write with confidence. In this respect, Grundkurs I should be seen as an introduction to the skills necessary for the study of English and as a clear indicator for the participants' further progress in their university studies.

There will be two central examinations for all Grundkurs I classes, which will take place outside of regular class time and which can only be taken on the dates given on the course schedule posted on the VC and as individual dates (Einzeltermine) on UnivIS. Students participating in class are required to register for these exams via FlexNow!

The course can only be attended in one semester, although the examinations are open to those students who were not successful in passing the course at the first attempt. In this semester, we are offering ONE “Grundkurs I for Repeaters” class; we advise those who have to repeat to attend this class.

The content of all of the parallel Grundkurs I classes is identical.

We reserve the right to ask students to move to different sections to create more equal numbers throughout the groups.

Mehrfachanmeldung für Parallelkurse führt zum Verlust des Platzanspruchs! Dies gilt nicht für die Warteliste.

Only those students who have to repeat the Grundkurs I exams this semester are eligible for this course!
Inhalt:
The course will address some of the typical errors made by those whose English was and is not of the same standard as other beginning students at our university. Whether you failed the course last semester by just a few points or maybe by 20 or 30, it should be clear to you that you were below the standard required to be awarded a minimal pass for Grundkurs I. Your goal now will be to make sure that you at least pass the course the second time round, even if your achievement may still be not sufficient to justify a higher grade than a mere pass!

By looking at common errors and using example exercises as additional practice material, we hope that as many of you as possible make sufficient progress with the help of this course to continue in your studies!

Please register in this course for the GKI exams (in FlexNow)!

Please note that this course is an offer that we might not be able to make every semester, so seize this chance to take the course now!

The course will help students efficiently identify articles that are relevant to their purpose, they will learn various ways to approach the article overall and they will learn how to use various reading strategies, working with each section of a journal article in turn, to understand and extract the information that they need. This will be done by, at first, demonstrations and controlled practice with teacher selected research articles from journals in the fields of Psychology and Education before leading to group and individual practice with student selected articles.

Placement Test for English HaF courses

Results of the test are valid for four semesters.

Additionally, students should register in FlexNow under Englisch: HaF Placement Test for one of the following test dates:

If you have any questions about the HaF placement test, please contact catherine.irvine(at)uni-bamberg.de for more information.
Inhalt:
This course will present a range of grammar topics that can be difficult for non-native speakers of English and discuss methods of avoiding mistakes in these topics through the use of natural examples and practical exercises. Both book and online resources will serve as sources for in-class and homework activities. Classwork (worth 50% of the final mark) and a final examination (worth 50% of the final mark) comprise the components of the evaluation for the class.

Landeskunde GB Contemporary Issues
The 21st century is a teenager – 16 years old! Much has happened to shape the face of modern Britain, and it is these events that we will deal with in this course.
Landeskunde GB Contemporary Issues will look at modern 21st century Britain, its people and society, its places, its culture, its (very recent) decisions, and, to a certain extent, its future.

This lecture course will deal with central topics concerning British life and institutions and will discuss some (if not all!) of the topics which are used as the basis for examinations. It should not only be seen as "the way to prepare for the oral exam", but also as an opportunity to learn about topics of interest related to Great Britain while also hearing spoken English.

It is recommended, especially for Lehramt students, to attend both the US and GB Landeskunde courses during their studies; students can specialize in either GB or US, but are strongly advised to have knowledge of both countries.

Students will be able to use the opportunity to discuss Landeskunde in more depth and in a smaller group than GB I. Student participation - in the form of short oral presentations - is a required element of this course so that the prospective examination candidate is not actively talking about Landeskunde for the first time in the examination itself!

This course focuses on both current and historical aspects of topics in American life. While Landeskunde US I is a lecture course, this course is intended to be more interactive: the instructor will provide an introduction into each topic and students are asked to present a portion of a topic to the class. This presentation should not only be seen as an opportunity to speak about the material, but a chance for students to practice (and receive feedback regarding) their spoken language skills before proceeding to their examinations. Like Landeskunde US I, this course is seen as preparation for the Landeskunde portion of later examinations.

Requirements for credits for this class will be discussed at the start of the semester.

Priority can be given to registrants based on their course of study and which semester they are in. You will receive notice approximately 3 days before the beginning of semester to confirm your spot in the course. We reserve the right to ask students to move to different sections to create more equal numbers throughout the groups.

LA Realschule/Grundschule/Hauptschule, Vertiefungsmodul (3 ECTS); students must have fully completed the Basis- and Aufbaumodule in Sprachpraxis to enter this class!
Inhalt:
To reflect the demands of LPO I, the Oberkurs is offered as a course which, along with the course Sprachmittlung II, deals with the main language elements of the final exam (Staatsexamen). In this final exam, the time is shared between Textproduktion, which is the main focus of the Oberkurs, and translation/Sprachmittlung.

There will be two exams written outside of class that are based on tasks/skills required by the Textproduktion examination for Lehramt. The course will require students to demonstrate considerable linguistic complexity on all levels and have a high degree of competence in Landeskunde. It is therefore indispensable that students have already taken classes in GB and US Landeskunde and are aware that this course is primarily intended as realistic preparation for Lehramt students for the Textproduktion paper in their final exams. It is thus advisable to take this course after a longer period spent abroad.

For organisational reasons, we recommend that you take this course either before or after taking the translation course Sprachmittlung II! These two courses should not be taken in the same semester! In addition, students should plan their studies so that they are not taking the Oberkurs in the same semester as the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten either as these courses share exam times and contents.

Vertiefungsmodul (3 ECTS)
Inhalt:
Important information regarding the "timing" for attending this course: as a result of changes suggested by the Ministry and the Prüfungsamt in the procedures for registering for the final exam, "new" LPO students are advised to take this class two semesters before writing the final exams (i.e. if you are taking the Staatsexamen in spring, you should attend this class in the previous summer term; if you are taking the Staatsexamen in autumn/fall, you should attend the class in the previous winter term). This will allow you enough time to have the grade for this course registered in FlexNow well before the deadline for submitting your final transcript to the Prüfungsamt arrives. “Old” LPO students can continue to take this class in the semester immediately before taking their final exams.
If this new information comes too late for you and you are very close to taking your exams (in Spring 2017, for example), please let the instructor know in the first lesson so that your grade for this class can be processed quickly!
The two courses will mainly deal with revising and refreshing the skills required in the written Textproduktion examination. Exam candidates will also be able to do more detailed preparation for the Landeskunde oral exam in this course and need not attend "regular" Landeskunde classes/lectures again.
Occasionally and possibly due to the fact that students are not aware of the above changes in registration procedures and deadlines for the final exam, we have requests to take the Oberkurs and the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten at the same time. This is unfortunately not possible as the exams for both courses are usually identical and are partially written at the same time! Students obviously cannot have the same "Prüfungsleistung" acknowledged for two separate courses. The other aspect is a very practical one: students will be covering exam task types in the Oberkurs that are potentially "repeated" in the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten or, in the worst case scenario, students may face an exam task in the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten exams that has not been covered in the Oberkurs at all, but only addressed in the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten. Even if it means taking the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten in the final semester before taking the final exams, students affected by this problem should plan accordingly and continue taking the Oberkurs first and the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten in the subsequent semester.
