Inhalt:
This course is designed for students of all faculties who have to write academic texts in English.
We will examine the typical style and vocabulary of academic writing and the linguistic tools needed
for referencing research sources, producing summaries and composing different types of essays, as well
as those skills needed for effective proofreading. This course will not only look at the mechanics of
writing, but also aim to help students become better academic thinkers and planners.

This course will involve collaborative work, and through guided practice, students will learn to give
peer feedback on their colleagues’ writing, helping them in turn to become better editors of their own compositions.
This course will be assessed by the means of a portfolio of texts written during the course.

NOTE: We recommend attending English: Academic Writing B2 before attending English: Academic Writing C1!

other disciplines who wish to improve their English should check the webpages of the Sprachenzentrum for general English courses
(HaF).
Inhalt:
Activities in Grundkurs I focus on the three fundamental skills in the English language (reading, listening and writing).
The aim is to make participants more proficient in understanding spoken and written English and to write with confidence.
In this respect, Grundkurs I should be seen as an introduction to the skills necessary for the study of English and as a clear
indicator for the participants' further progress in their university studies.

There will be two central examinations for all Grundkurs I classes, which will take place outside of regular class time and which
can only be taken on the dates given on the course schedule posted on the VC and as individual dates (Einzeltermine) on UnivIS.
Students participating in class are required to register for these exams via FlexNow!

The course can only be attended in one semester, although the examinations are open to those students who were not successful in
passing the course at the first attempt.

The content of all of the parallel Grundkurs I classes is identical.

You will receive notice approximately 3 days before the beginning of semester to confirm your spot in the course.

Only those students who have to repeat the Grundkurs I exams this semester are eligible for this course!
Inhalt:
The course will address some of the typical errors made by those whose English was and is not of the same standard as other beginning students at our university. Whether you failed the course last semester by just a few points or maybe by 20 or 30, it should be clear to you that you were below the standard required to be awarded a minimal pass for Grundkurs I. Your goal now will be to make sure that you at least pass the course the second time round, even if your achievement may still be not sufficient to justify a higher grade than a mere pass!

By looking at common errors and using example exercises as additional practice material, we hope that as many of you as possible make sufficient progress with the help of this course to continue in your studies!

Please register in this course for the GKI exams (in FlexNow)!

Please note that this course is an offer that we might not be able to make every semester, so seize this chance to take the course now!

This course focuses on both current and historical aspects of topics in American life. While Landeskunde US I is a lecture course, this course is intended to be more interactive: students will present a topic focusing on a research question to the class. This presentation should not only be seen as an opportunity to speak about the material, but a chance for students to practice (and receive feedback regarding) their spoken language skills before proceeding to their examinations. Like Landeskunde US I, this course should be seen as preparation for the Landeskunde/Sprechfertigkeit portion of the centralized exams for future teachers.

Requirements for credits for this class will be discussed at the start of the semester.

Students must have fully completed the Basis- and Aufbaumodule in Sprachpraxis to enter this class!
Inhalt:
To reflect the demands of LPO I, the Oberkurs is offered as a course which, along with the course Sprachmittlung II, deals with the main
language elements of the final exam (Staatsexamen). In this final exam, the time is shared between Textproduktion, which is the main focus
of the Oberkurs, and translation/Sprachmittlung.
There will be two exams written outside of class that are based on tasks/skills required by the Textproduktion examination for Lehramt.
The course will require students to demonstrate considerable linguistic complexity on all levels and have a high degree of competence in
Landeskunde. It is therefore indispensable that students have already taken classes in GB and US Landeskunde and are aware that this course is
primarily intended as realistic preparation for Lehramt students for the Textproduktion paper in their final exams. It is thus advisable to
take this course after a longer period spent abroad.

For organisational reasons, we recommend that you take this course either before or after taking the translation course Sprachmittlung
II
! These two courses should not be taken in the same semester! In addition, students should plan their studies so that they are not
taking the Oberkurs in the same semester as the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten either as these courses share exam times
and contents.

LA Gymnasium, Vertiefungsmodul (3 ECTS); students must have fully completed the Basis- and Aufbaumodule in Sprachpraxis to enter this
class!

Inhalt:
To reflect the demands of the LPO I, the Oberkurs is offered as a course which, along with the course Sprachmittlung II, deals with the main language elements of the final exam (Staatsexamen). In this final exam, the time is shared between Textproduktion, which is the main focus of the Oberkurs, and translation/Sprachmittlung.

There will be two exams written outside of class that are based on tasks/skills required by the Textproduktion examination for Lehramt. The course will require students to demonstrate considerable linguistic complexity on all levels and have a high degree of competence in Landeskunde. It is therefore indispensable that students have already taken classes in GB and US Landeskunde and are aware that this course is primarily intended as realistic preparation for Lehramt students for the Textproduktion paper in their final exams. It is thus advisable to take this course after a longer period spent abroad.

In addition, students should plan their studies so that they are not taking the Oberkurs in the same semester as the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten either as these courses share exam times and contents.

The content and goals of both Oberkurs (vertieft; “new” LPO) courses are identical.

Please register for this diagnostic test in FlexNow (Lehrveranstaltungen)

Please check the Sprachenzentrum website under “News” concerning FlexNow registration dates.

The HaF Placement Test is not a substitute or equivalent of the Anglistik Einstufungstest. For details concerning the Anglistik Einstufungstest, please check the Anglistik website under “News”.

Description
To attend HaF English classes, students must take an obligatory placement test at the beginning of the semester. This helps us to place students in the correct course level. The placement test evaluates grammar, reading, listening and vocabulary, and must be completed before FlexNow course registration closes. Students who do not take the test may not be able to attend English courses this semester.

Test Results
No certificate will be issued for the completion of the HaF placement test, nor can the test be “passed” or “failed”; it is purely for diagnostic purposes. You will receive an email with your test results with a score out of 92 and the CEFR level (B1, B2 etc.) you should select for your course(s) . If you have taken the test once or have attended a course in general English, you do not have to take the placement test again.
If you have taken the Anglistik Einstufungstest, you do not have to take this placement test.

The HaF Placement Test will take place ONLINE.
You will receive an email with more information about access to the test when FlexNow registration for the test has closed.

Results of the test are valid for four semesters.

If you have any questions about the HaF placement test, please contact catherine.irvine@uni-bamberg.de for more information.

The course objectives are to enhance students’ ability to structure and deliver oral presentations in English. We will focus on the differences between oral and written communication, simple rhetorical techniques and the functional language required to present and communicate successfully.
The students will learn to:
• present an argument in their individual field of study convincingly and persuasively
• interact with the audience by expressing opinions; agreeing and disagreeing with statements and answering questions
• create effective PowerPoint presentations
• use body language and voice effectively

The course includes opportunities to practise elements of a presentation before leading to a 20-minute presentation at the end of the course. Group feedback will enable students to become aware of their strengths and weaknesses, develop strategies to overcome their weaknesses and hone their presentation skills. Regular participation and preparation is expected for the successful completion of the course.

Please register in FlexNow for the parallel course that is appropriate for your course of studies (i.e.

that, depending on numbers in the respective parallel classes, the course may be occasionally amalgamated
into one class session. More information on this matter will be given in class.
LA GS MS RS BS : Vertiefungsmodul (3 ECTS); LA GY : Wahlpflichtmodul Sprachpraxis (2 ECTS)
Inhalt:
Important information regarding the "timing" for attending this course: as a result of changes suggested by the Ministry and
the Prüfungsamt in the procedures for registering for the final exam, students are advised to take this class two semesters
before writing the final exams (i.e. if you are taking the Staatsexamen in spring, you should attend this class in the
previous summer term; if you are taking the Staatsexamen in autumn/fall, you should attend the class in the previous winter
term). This will allow you enough time to have the grade for this course registered in FlexNow well before the deadline for
submitting your final transcript to the Prüfungsamt arrives.

If this new information comes too late for you and you are very close to taking your exams (in Autumn 2019, for example),
please let the instructor know in the first lesson so that your grade for this class can be processed quickly!

The two courses will mainly deal with revising and refreshing the skills required in the written Textproduktion examination.
Exam candidates will also be able to do more detailed preparation for the Landeskunde oral exam in this course and need not
attend "regular" Landeskunde classes/lectures again.

Occasionally and possibly due to the fact that students are not aware of the above changes in registration procedures and
deadlines for the final exam, we have requests to take the Oberkurs and the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten at
the same time. This is unfortunately not possible as the exams for both courses are usually identical and are partially
written at the same time! Students obviously cannot have the same "Prüfungsleistung" acknowledged for two separate courses.
The other aspect is a very practical one: students will be covering exam task types in the Oberkurs that are potentially
"repeated" in the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten or, in the worst case scenario, students may face an exam task
in the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten exams that has not been covered in the Oberkurs at all, but only
addressed in the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten. Even if it means taking the Sprachpraktische Übung für
Examenskandidaten in the final semester before taking the final exams, students affected by this problem should plan
accordingly and continue taking the Oberkurs first and the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten in the subsequent
semester.

Inhalt:
This block seminar is divided into two parts. The first session, Writing Academic Papers in English, will highlight the skills necessary to write in English at an advanced academic level and focus on abstract writing for both journals and conferences. The second session, Presenting Academic Papers in English, offers a review of the skills needed to become a successful presenter and the opportunity to present a 20-minute conference paper to the group with subsequent feedback from the other participants and the lecturer.
The course will ideally look at "work in progress" being carried out by advanced students as part of their doctoral programmes. It is not primarily designed for students of English, but for those who have to work in and with English within their academic careers.
For prospective participants who do not have student access to FlexNow, an email announcing interest in participating in the course should be sent to the instructor (catherine.irvine@uni-bamberg.de). All prospective participants will be informed by email about whether there is capacity for them to attend before the semester begins.
