Das Seminar führt in zentrale methodische Fragestellungen, Grundbegriffe, theoretische Modelle und historische Zusammenhänge des Faches Britische und Amerikanische Kulturwissenschaft ein. Der Kurs findet sowohl in englischer als auch deutscher Sprache statt, um die Studierenden mit beiden Wissenschaftssprachen vertraut zu machen.

The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for the academic pursuit of British and American cultural studies. The course is conducted in both English and German, in order to familiarize the students with the specialized academic use of both languages.

Lernergebnisse, Kompetenzen/Learning outcomes, Skills:

Grundthemen und Fragestellungen der Kulturwissenschaften konsequent mit literarischen Texten und Lektüren zu verbinden, ihre inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, systematisch zu rekonstruieren sowie diese kritisch in Wort und Schrift zu analysieren. Es wird ein erster Überblick in kulturwissenschaftliche Analysemodelle und Fachterminologie gewonnen. Ferner werden grundlegende Kompetenzen sowohl formaler als auch zielsprachlicher Art vermittelt. Die kommunikativen und sozialen Kompetenzen der Studierenden werden durch interaktive und projektbezogene Gruppenarbeit gefordert und gefördert.

To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed. Students' ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

Inhalt:
[A]s unknown [ ] as the darkest reaches of Africa. As a description of the backstreets of London, this quotation, from Arthur Machen s 1895 horror novel The Three Imposters, is typical of tropes of otherness routinely employed in late nineteenth-century British culture. As the Empire reached its high-water mark, and British society exulted in its own self-confidence, an anxiety at the alien was growing in the shadows and at the margins. Even (or perhaps precisely) at the end of a century that had seen the unprecedented advance of science and technology, both the fear and the fascination around ghosts, monsters, and devils of all kinds was permeating literary and cultural production. A sense that secure borders were crumbling found a virulent focal point in a growing fear of the impact of mass immigration, especially from Eastern Europe.

The primary focus of this seminar will be British and Irish literature and culture of the fin de siècle. In particular, we shall consider how literary texts both figured and reflected insecurities and anxieties about human and social identity in relation to its many others . Beginning with a contextual introduction, which will present the scientific, philosophical, and medical backdrop to our texts, we shall develop our theoretical framework around Sigmund Freud s essay Das Unheimliche (1919). This will be followed by a selection of Gothic short stories, and novellas and novels that articulate alterity in its myriad forms. We will begin with Robert Louis Stevenson s chilling tales of terror The Body Snatcher (1884), The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), and Olalla (1896). Moving through Henry James s brilliantly subtle and uncanny ghost stories, we will conclude the course with two of the fin de siècle s greatest novels of alien invasion: Bram Stoker s Dracula (1897) and H. G. Wells The War of the Worlds (1898).

Inhalt:
Am 4. März 2022 im KR12/02.05 (09.30-11:00 Uhr) findet eine Wiederholungsklausur für diejenigen Studierenden der Einführungskurse von Dr. Craig (Courses 1 & 3) statt, die den Kurs trotz Mitschreibens der Abschlussklausur nicht bestanden haben oder aufgrund eines ärztlichen Attestes an der Abschlussklausur nicht teilnehmen konnten. Das Attest muss der/m Lehrenden innerhalb von drei Tagen (hier gelten die Bestimmungen unter: https://www.uni-bamberg.de/anglistik/studium/informationen-zur-attestpflicht/ ) im Original vorgelegt werden. “My name is Karim Amir, and I am an Englishman born and bred, almost. I am often considered to be a funny kind of Englishman, a new breed as it were, having emerged from two old histories.” Thus begins Hanif Kureishi’s picaresque novel of identities lost and identities re-forged, The Buddha of Suburbia: a state-of-the-nation snapshot of 1970s Britain, certainly, but also a wry portrait of the myriad challenges of location and adaptation faced by first- and second-generation migrants in a ‘mother country’ that was by turns indifferent and hostile. In 2021, a tolerant and multicultural Britain may be a mixture of fantasy and reality – but even the ‘reality’, as we have recently seen, has surprisingly shallow historical roots.

One the basis of the theoretical framework supplied by Edward Said, Stuart Hall, and Homi K. Bhabha, we will be reading some of the finest literary work to have emerged from the problematic legacy of Empire. We start with Sam Selvon’s classic novel, The Lonely Londoners (1956), an exploration of the struggles of belonging and discrimination faced by the first generation of immigrants from the West Indies. Andrea Levy’s epic bestseller, Small Island (2004) intertwines multiple stories and perspectives in a tale of love, loss, new homes, and new identities. The Buddha of Suburbia traces out Karim’s attempts, as the mixed-race son of an Indian immigrant, to find his own path. Finally, Zadie Smith’s White Teeth (2000) crosses cultures, generations, and much else besides in a multi-stranded account of Britain’s complex attitude towards its Commonwealth.
