Inhalt:

Innerhalb von nicht mehr als 40 bis 50 Generationen, die zwischen der Herrschaft von König Alfred und der Gegenwart liegen, hat sich das Englische so stark verändert, dass es beim Vergleich eines altenglischen mit einem neuenglischen Text gleichen Inhalts kaum mehr als dieselbe Sprache zu erkennen ist. Viele Bereiche des Sprachsystems waren extremen Veränderungsprozessen unterworfen. Diese Tatsache und die relativ zahlreich erhaltenen Zeugnisse früherer Sprachzustände, z.B. verschiedene Bibelübersetzungen, machen das Englische zu einem lohnenden Forschungsgegenstand für die historische Linguistik.
Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute. Neben grundlegenden Aspekten der historischen Linguistik werden Kontinuität und Wandel vor allem in den Bereichen der Phonologie, der Morphologie, der Syntax und des Lexikons beleuchtet. Dabei gewinnen die Studierenden vertiefte Einblicke in den historischen Werdegang der englischen Sprache im Besonderen und in Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Sprachwandels im Allgemeinen.

It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress. Core readings and texts for transcription will be made available on the Virtual Campus after each session.

Description:
The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Aufbaumodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in approaching and handling data, sources of information and technologies. The topics treated will include the retrieval and processing of secondary literature, the composition of linguistic texts, the formatting of handouts and term papers in Word for Windows, the use of online dictionaries and databases, the analysis of linguistic corpora, etc.

Description:
The grammar of English (its morphology and especially its syntax) provides no prefabricated, unique ways of saying (or writing) something you want to express, but rather offers a variety of grammatical variants with identical or similar meanings. For instance, without implying a meaning difference, you can say either of the variants:
(1) The event is aimed at children and parents / parents and children.
(2) The waiter brought the wine we had ordered to the table / to the table the wine we had ordered.
(3) Sandy picked up the paper / picked the paper up.
(4) The other person’s nose / nose of the other person was broken.
(5) He had to give the FBI his fingerprints / his fingerprints to the FBI.
(6) The whole audience started laughing / to laugh.
(7) They lighted / lit the stack of wood from below.
(8) We wanted to try to save / to try and save expenses.
(9) The only thing he could do was wait / to wait.
(10) Supposing that / Supposing you had good marks, would you go to university?

On the other hand, there are subtle meaning differences, mirrored in the grammatical differences, between the following:
(11) The map indicates all the navigable rivers / the rivers navigable.

(14) We sprayed paint on the wall / the wall with paint.

What is interesting about grammatical variation phenomena such as (1)-(14) is the fact that they are not random, but allow us to gather insights into the ways speakers and hearers process language: Cognitive processes in language use involve an intricate network of interacting functional factors that may reinforce or counteract each other, such as semantic, phonological and various processing-related effects (e.g. those of frequency, complexity, economy, givenness). Since most of these are linguistic universals working independently of time and a particular language, they afford insights into the forces that design and shape grammar and drive linguistic change.

Grammatical variation and change have been at the focus of linguistic interest for the past few decades. Their investigation has been facilitated by the use of ever-increasing electronic text collections (corpora) in which we can explore and measure native speaker behaviour in cases where the grammar provides two or more options. An analysis of the forces underlying native speaker intuitions will have the useful side effect of sensitizing students to grammatical choices in English as a foreign language.

Students in this seminar will be expected to present a case study based on a research article and to carry out and report on a related corpus-based small-scale research project in their termpapers.

The Übung that accompanies the Hauptseminar (Thursdays, 9:15 – 10:00 h) is designed to discuss oral presentations, handouts, practical tasks and termpaper projects individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.

Description:
This Übung is designed to help individual students and/or small groups of students attending the Hauptseminar "Cognitive Aspects of Grammatical Variation in English" in their preparation of oral presentations, handouts, empirical analyses and termpaper projects. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided. Further information will be given at the first meeting of the Hauptseminar.
