Inhalt:

It almost goes without saying that such a vast subject as “Religion in American Life” cannot be covered comprehensively in one university course. This seminar adopts a two-pronged approach: on the one hand, it attempts to provide an overview of the main directions and debates in American religious life, among them “the relationship between Church and State”, “Fundamentalism vs. Modernism”, “Mainline Protestantism vs. Evangelicalism”, “religion and race” and “religion and the media”. On the other, it will highlight a few specific texts, people, and movements that have left an indelible mark on American religious culture, e.g. essays from The Fundamentals, Billy Graham’s sermons, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s last speech “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”; Calvary Chapel pastor Chuck Smith, flamboyant televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, and Waco cult “prophet” David Koresh; The Social Gospel, The Nation of Islam, and the 2023 Asbury revival. While most of the seminar will be concerned with the 20^th and 21^st centuries, the first sessions will provide some background information on the colonial period, as well as the 18^th and 19^th centuries. Religious traditions outside Christianity will be addressed only briefly.

Inhalt:

In this seminar, we are going to approach Victorian art and architecture from a cultural studies perspective. To be sure, we will also look at such topics as painting techniques, genres of painting and art movements, but a major concern will be the question to what extent art and architecture are indicative of certain social and cultural phenomena and processes. How did the new power of a self-confident middle class impact art? What ideas of gender are presented in these pictures and why were women excluded from the art establishment? How were certain architectural styles used to promote the idea of national grandeur? And how are we to understand the fascination with the middle ages present in Victorian aesthetics?

Naturally, some big names from the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, such as John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti loom large in a seminar on Victorian art, but we will also look at some notable Academicians like William Powell Frith and Charles West Cope.

Apart from scrutinizing pictures, interior design, and architecture, we will study a few theoretical texts, e.g. by John Ruskin, William Morris, and Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

This course provides an overview of important approaches in the theory of culture. We will study key texts that have influenced the discipline of Cultural Studies in the Anglo-American world and beyond. Rather than being based on a lecture-style instruction, this class should be understood as a forum to discuss students positions toward the texts. Inhalt:

The time around 1800 was a critical period for the development of the social, political, and cultural landscape of Great Britain. Apart from the technical, economic, and social changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution, it was the overthrow of the political system across the Channel that triggered a heated discussion about the constitutional institutions, the legal system, the hierarchical order, the role of women, and the religious establishment in Britain. In the course of the French Revolution Debate ideological camps formed up, often referred to as the Jacobins and the anti-Jacobins or the conservatives and the radicals. At the same time, a new literary movement emerged now referred to as Romanticism that sometimes engaged with the social and political realities and sometimes tried to avoid them by retreating into the realm of the imagination. In order to deepen an understanding of the historical and cultural processes of the time, the lecture course analyses key texts ranging from the theoretical pamphlet to the religious tract and from the poem to the novel.
